My honest review PART 2: The great, the good, the bad and the even more WTF of it all!
Hello, I would love to share my opinion about part 2 just like I did with part 1 in once again in VERY, VERY, VERY detail. I’d like to say I enjoyed part 2 way more than part 1 (that is why they need to stop splitting seasons, I had the same problem with Wednesday S2). However, I still didn’t enjoy it as much as I did the first 3 seasons.
I will, just like the first, separate what I believe is good/bad/neutral and what I liked/didn’t like. (Those are different things. It is not because I didn’t like something that it is badly done, for example.)
The Great (& what I adored) :
Pen’s mirror scene…I cried! Baby Pen in the reflection, whoever had the idea, THANK YOU! It is also so a cute detail that mirrors are Pen & Polin’s symbol and played a huge part in their stories.
“Are you ready, my love?” That was THE ONLY THING I ASKED FOR POLIN, was for Colin to have another pet name (other than Pen) for his wife. It was once, but it was glorious.
THEY ARE GLUED TO EACH OTHER! Those two can’t resist touching one another when they are in the same room. Which I love, it is a detail, it’s in the background, she leans on him and looks down at her, he holds her from behind at the funeral, they are always holding hands one way or another, it is lovely, and I love every part of it.
We saw them more than I thought we would (I thought they would pull out a Kanthony S3 cards), but they didn’t. Yes, it was mainly background, and it was always very short, but we got them blissfully in love.
Just EVERY SINGLE moment of them!
Peneloise: The little we have of them is so cute, they are so back to BFF, and I believe they are even closer than before. They both learn from past mistakes in this friendship, and you can see it.
The cheese club: THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER! It was only once, but seeing that Colin hosted a cheese tasting for his brother-in-law and that Greg fit in so well (he was just passing by, and he looked like he belonged) was amazing. Everything about this scene SCREAMS Colin’s personality. He loves love, his wife, food, and being goofy! The greenest flag indeed!
Francesca arc: First, I am sooooo feeling for her! The way she believes she is “cursed” because she “failed” at a duty that actually involved a large element of chance, and the unknown is heartbreaking. However, it was so beautifully written, and Hanna is killing it as an actress!!! I really like Michaela (while I didn’t like Michael in the book) and their relationship now, and I am waiting for their season.
Kanthony and their baby: Who EVER cast the babies this season…IS THE MOST COMPETENT PERSON ON THIS PRODUCTION! For once, we finally have a book canon baby. Love Elliot with all my heart (and we needed him for the plot), but Agatha Bridgerton, you are missed (hope we hear about her next season). But that scene was one of the cutest Kanthony’s scenes EVER!
“You are not married, so you don’t know what you are doing. (or something like that) Gregory roasting Ben for his lack of engagement with women was hilarious. I love that Greg would be more like Colin, not like Ant and Ben. It is a good balance; we have enough “Rake” like characters in the show and in the media in general. Give us romantic, chaotic golden retriever guys.
The Bridgerton shenanigans: when they make Sophie come to the queen's ball, and Violet is distracting the footman while all the kids in a group rush into the ball, was hilarious. I want MORE of those kinds of goody moments.
The good (& what I liked) :
Sophie: She still rocks! She really is the one good thing about Benophie. I don’t have more notes for her; she is just great. However, her story is extremely predictable (even without reading the book), but that is the problem with the Cinderella trope; we know it by heart, therefore, we know exactly what happened.
The Servants: Alfie, we love you! Varley, you are the best! I really enjoyed the roles the servants played this season. However, we do know (that except for principal maids like Varley, Miss. Wilson or Footman John) we are not seeing any of them again. This was a 1 season only because the lead character is a maid. It is “only one of them made it out of her class” because she is actually the daughter of a nobleman.
The Queen and Lady D: That storyline made me angry in the
Hyacinth’s arc : I always loved her, so I was waiting for her to have more story, and I was not disappointed. Her being so excited, planning everything, and imagining how it would be, but then reality hit, and things did not sound so great anymore was really well done (I am sad for her that she feels like all this is useless if your husband dies), but it was well exectuted and Florence is truly so pretty and adorable and talented at such a young age. Her relationship with Eloise was adorable, the silent treatment was classic Hyacinth behaviour, and I love how she helped her go to a ball. The juxtaposition with Hya and Sophie, one dressed as a maid and the other as nobility, only to be able to see a ball. That was a great cinematic moment.
Michaela’s character: She is amazing. Who gave her the right to be that great a character? I loved the way she honoured her cousin. I love how she has stories and is actually a really kind person. I can’t wait to see more of her!
The handle of John’s passing: It was heartbreaking but beautiful! The way he was honoured by everybody in sorrow and in happiness had made me cry. I did not much care for him in S3, but his passing (even if I knew it was coming) made me feel so sad. I like that they spent so much time on it, because this is not a story you can just throw in for 3min here, then 4 minutes there…no, it needs a continuous acknowledgement. I like that we see John’s passing affect different characters depending on where they are in life and how old they are. Like Hyacinth not wanting to marry anymore, because there’s no point here, Violet being reminded of Edmund, Ben being even more pissed with society’s rule… Now, a note that has nothing to do with this I weirdly that black suited everybody so well, like Pen and El were rocking those black dresses in the drawing room with Fran.
Posy : I didn’t like her in part 1, found her…not really useful. But she’s so cute, and the way she helps Sophie and is actually smarter than she makes believe, and how she found a match at the end. Posy is the total opposite of characters like her sister, Cressida, or even Prudence; she is the prime example that your family situation and the way you are treated should not make you treat others badly. That kindness, or at least just not being mean, is always a choice and will be rewarded. Now I am not the biggest fan of overly kind black-and-white characters, but she emphasises Cinderella’s original lessons about kindness. While Sophie also embodies that because she is Cinderella, Posy has a naivety that emphasises her sweetness despite the adversity, while Sophie uses resilience.
The wedding scene: Yes, even as somebody who did not enjoy the main couple, the wedding scene was adorable. Sophie was gorgeous, loved Anthony, and Kate was here, so Colin decided to match with his wife and NOT his brothers. I love him for that. My only complaint is…why after the credits? Does it change that we already got it? I was confused about this choice. And one thing I did not like was that they made Pen ask Fran if she wanted to do all this again; this is so out of character; they really just needed somebody to blur the lines about who’s next season’s lead. Actually, I believe Hyacinth would have been a great candidate to ask this question; her excitement about the wedding would have made this more natural for her to ask.
Colin helping Greg : First…baby Greg is growing 🥹 and Colin being the brother he goes to for romantic advice is pure candy for my brain. Greg is chaotic; he wants love, he wants what Polin has. He didn’t advise Ben because he sees Ben’s lack of marriage as something he doesn't desire. Greg falls in love with the first girl he sees (So Colin S1, they are INDEED brothers), he wants to be a romantic, and Colin is the perfect one for that.
Eloise’s growth: She grew so much in FOUR episodes than she did in FOUR seasons…soooo she is next season? Right? Right? But it was so refreshing to see sweet Eloise and not snappy/angry Eloise. While I understand her point of view and she is allowed and right to be angry, it was non-stop at some point. I almost forgot she was technically so nice.
The Montrich is being linked to the main plot: One thing that bothers me about the Montrich is that they were introduced by being linked with the main plot, and then have been wandering alone with no real reasons to be in the story. I am glad they are tied back to the plot again and actually participate in it. Also, Alice “replacing” Lady Danbury could work, but I'll miss Lady D.
The subplots are great: Except for one or two choices, the subplots this season are top-tier, they are entertaining, and I couldn’t wait to go back to them.
Hazel and Footman John: I am spotting a new couple to ship; they are adorable, I love them, can we have a spin-off? (After one about Polin, of course)
The LW issue at Cressida’s ball: I love the callback at S3 when Cressida’s fake LW interompted the ball, with Pen’s actual last issue. It was a great node, and I really love that moment.
The neutral (not bad, not good and what started great but ended badly):
Ben & Sophie Chemistry: Here’s the thing, I thought, as the characters were falling a little more in love and the actors were getting to know each other more, I would see more chemistry between them…still just okay. They look cute together; we are not denying that, but the sexual chemistry is a little lacking to the point that I am not buying it.
Cressida coming back: It did not bother me, and it was useful for the plot, to be honest, so Soph could get her father’s will, so that Pen could finally decide to put LW to rest. I do believe Cress being here kinda made Pen even more willing to retire. It was great that Cressida apologised and said she is trying to change, but you could see Pen is still traumatised by the bullying and blackmail. And not gonna lie, I always thought Pen was a bit petty, so that she refused to forgive her that fast or write about her, is quite on brand. When it comes to Cressida, they try to go for a redeeming arc and go back to square one each time, so good, they really are going for “she is changing” and we can put that character to rest. I did like the conversation with Eloise about love. I would have loved it better if this conversation had been given by somebody else, but it is useful for Eloise’s season.
The love confessions: They are good, of course, it’s Bridgerton, but they didn’t stay in my head the way “the ban of my existence”, “I burn for you” or “I will not, can not, do not want to give up”. I did not cry the way I did when Colin knelt, I did not gasp like when George shouted in Queen Charlotte, I did not melt the way Daphne delivers her love to Simon, and I did smile like an idiot with Anthony and Kate. What I mean is, they are not iconic enough.
The pace & episode time: If you are going to make longer episodes (fine by me, it means YEAH more Bridgerton) makes more conscious choices on which scenes need to be long. The conflict resolution needs to breathe, have more tension, and therefore spend more time on it. Like the ball should have been longer, the moment
The bad (& what I didn’t like) :
Benedict’s character: Please bring back S2 Benedict, he was so good 😣! I love yearning as much as anyone. I love sad, mopey Bridgerton boys over the love of their life. That being said, it was Ben's entire personality in this part; they really gave him one note in part 1 and one note in part 2... Where is bubbly, funny, poetic Ben from S2, who got high with Colin, dreamed of painting and wrote poetry because Anthony knew nothing about it? I swear, he gets emptier every episode. Now I know everything is sad in part 2, but even the other male leads did not lose their personality when they were at rock bottom. Ben really is just a shell; it is fine when he is not the lead. It is tiresome and boring when he is. Picture S2 Ben (the best version of Ben, by the way), it would have been so much better, full of life even in the sad parts.
The directing and acting choices: Luke T, a very good actor, seems not know how to bring Ben to life anymore. I learn from movies like Twilight or The Kissing Booth that sometimes it is not the actors who are bad, but the director. Robert Pattinson’s acting in Twilight is awful, but his acting in other things is truly great. So I wonder if this season's directors just don’t know how to do Ben properly. Luke does not add depth to his body language (not gonna lie, I had the same problem with RJP in S1), and the facial expressions are getting harder to differentiate. And that brings me to the next point.
Having one lead caring for the entire plot: Because Ben is so empty and shallow, and therefore Luke T is working with nothing other than Rake Ben, “I can’t find the LIS”, “I love Sophie” and “I hate society’s rule” for 8 episodes, Yerin/Sophie has to do the heavy lifting here. She does have more material to work with; her backstory is just being told and hasn’t been milked to the point of exhaustion, and it changes three different times. While the 3 other seasons did not have this problem (mainly S2 and 3, both JB/Simone and LN/Nic were extremely equal in caring for their season. I would say RJP was slightly stronger in his acting, but not enough that you felt that he was doing more than Pheobe), but here, it is not for Yerin, the entire pair falls flat.
The writing: Do we need over-explaining? I know I am doing it in this essay-review, but this is not an 8-episode over-1-hour show. Now, the audience is sometimes dumb, I do agree, and they need to be taken by the end and shoved the ideas in their tiny faces, otherwise their interpretation is all wrong! Now, if they want to over-explain everything to us, DO IT! Don’t over-explain the main plot and shove the side-plot to barely nothing, and leave us with guessing and piecing everything together. Either you do the piecing for us, or you do NONE, and we can use our brain (unlike the Bridgerton men, sorry I had to make that joke)
The hypocrisy of Ben: Sir, here is the NUMBER ONE RAKE of the family (worse than Anthony, I believe) actively SLEPT with a widow, had sex with “an acquaintance,” and Sir here, has THE AUDACITY to judge his mother and her sex life, because she told him something he did not like hearing? IMMATURE AND HYPOCRITE MUCH MISTER BENEDICT BRIDGERTON? And you guys wonder why I like him a little less each time.
Inconsistency: Do the writers remembers than Polin has a baby?
The sex scenes: I couldn’t! I am sorry, they are a no for me. The staircase was already awkward-looking, but it just got worse. The one in ep5 started okay, not the most incredible but not bad, enjoyable, then he picked her up, and they got in bed and…NOP! There was nothing hot going on anymore, so I had to skip! I do like that Sophie knows more about sex than other female leads (however, let’s not call the other lead “naive” they aren’t! They are unknowledgeable on the subject because nobody cares about explaining it to them!!!). The second sex scene with the bath, I just couldn’t watch, it was not beautiful or well shot (I believe the problem is the camera work). I gringe at it, there something lacking here (it is not Yerin’s acting or gorgeousness for sure, she is what makes all this less painful to watch), but something is not it.
An off feeling STILL: Now it was not as much as part 1 (thanks to Fran’s story for bringing so many family scenes in part 2), but I still can’t watch that season without feeling like it is an entirely different show. Is it the decor? Is it the new characters? It is still does not feel like Bridgerton, if anyone has the same feelings, please help!
The camera work AGAIN: Some of those shots are choices, and it shows! In the 3 other seasons, I never questioned the camera work; here, since episode 1, I've wondered what they were doing. Angles, things blocking the view, chop off head… really weird choices. I believe they are doing too many more front-angle shots, which are to confront, ational, and they aren’t working as well as ¾ angle shots. Yes…I did have studdy cinema in college 😀
The production worth: Do you remember the S4 small interview where Nicola said they were actually shooting in a warehouse? Yes…so it shows in the new set, because they are not great qualities. Not that we can see it is a warehouse, but we can see that it is fake. And I am not to scream to “realism”, Bridgerton isn’t, no matter if it’s story-wise, makeup-wise, costume-wise… and I don’t care! But when I say it looks fake, I can tell you this is NOT a real house 😂. It is not the end of the world, but S1 put the bar so high production-wise, and the other two followed, that this season feels cheap.
Lady Penwood: God, I hate one-note villains and even more stubborn ones. You know a villain is good when (when the hero tells them they pla failed) they found a new one. Here she was, so stuck on the shoe-clip and the “impersonating nobility” she wouldn’t leave alone. Get some new plan, girl, please. She is so detestable, I am starting to like Cressida’s mom. Also, I did not get her backstory. She hated Sophie because she just…existed? Can somebody help me understand this person, please? I don’t get it!
The subplots are more interesting than the main plot: When John’s funeral, Fran’s arc, Hyathin’s practice ball, the main war (in part 1) or Polin’s life are more interesting than the main lead couple (Sophie’s story is great, the moment Ben arrives, it is not anymore), we have a problem. The only interesting part of their story happened in E8, and yet everything gets resolved WAY to gast and easy, almost like nobody cares. I never wanted to fast-forward the main plot, yet here we are! And I thought it was because I did not care about Benophies, but I don't care about Saphne, and yet I don’t fast-forward S1 main plot (except when I only wanted to rewatch Polin, but then I fast forward EVERYTHING that isn’t Polin 😅)
A lack of depth: The main couple lacks depth in their story. Everything feels superficial. The deep connection isn't there enough. I believe that the actors not knowing each other enough and having to play love at first sight is one of the reasons. Also, every time they were together, I felt like it didn’t match, like the love/connection is forced.
The way they fix the class problem: Sooo, the queen comes in, says she looks gorgeous, and gives her blessing to them getting married? That’s it? That is how we are fixing the ONLY conflict of the couple? The ONLY thing that gave this couple complications was their social class, and it took 3 seconds for the queen to agree? Simon had to deliver an entire speech longer than that scene just for a SPECIAL license while he was still marrying nobility! Perhaps if they took less time on scenes where nothing happens (looking at you, part 1) maybe there would be more time here.
Violet and Marcus: WHYYYYYY? I understand not having her marry him, I understand her wanting to find herself again, and I love that he respects that, but he wants something real. But if we are going down that road, why have the marriage conversation? To be honest, since both of them are widow, I never thought them not being married was a problem (but then again I 2026 vision 😂).
The handling of LW (and the disrespect of the entire arc) : Pen retired LW like in the book, on her own terms, plus she is writing novels…Great! No notes for it! Somebody stills her column… FUCKING EXCUSE ME? We spent ENTIRE EPISODES in S3, where Pen thought to not let Cressida stop her work, to have Colin come to terms with the secret identity, an entire fight with the queen, and Pen risking almost her future with Colin BECAUSE MISS JESS WANT A FUCKING MYSTERY? CAN SHE STOP WRITING THE SHOW? I used to give her the benefit of the doubt and defend her because I couldn’t believe she didn't care about the show she was working on…BUT NOT ANYMORE! More than just a disrespect to Penelope’s arc and characterisation, it is a straight disrespect to Julia’s work. Julia found a great way to make the last 4 books work without LW, because Bridgerton never been about the mystery or the gossip, it always been about love. And here, let’s just throw that away. Is Jess frustrated she didn’t write the 2 first two seasons? ‘Cause it looks like it!
Anthony (and Kate) are feeling like ghosts: I get JB is busy, but why are we acting like Anthony and Kate came back, stayed 3 days in story time, and then went back wherever? Why in Ben taking care of the estate and such? Anthony is supposed to be back; he is the Viscount, him and Kate LIVE in this freaking house. They missed a funeral, why? Where are they? Not in India, obviously, so WHERE? I hate it when some key characters are missing, and we are not even given an actual reason. All we got was that Anthony left again, to go where? And do not let me start on Kate or worse… Daphne and Simon. I swear, the writers act like they are dead. We only know they still exist because Violet casually dropped his name to the judge. That brings the last point (which is generic and not just S4 relatade)
It’s an ensemble show, but it’s not their season: One of my complaints about the show is that it doesn’t know what it wants to be. The books are anthologies, with some characters coming and going in each. The secondary characters do not have side stories; they are mainly linked here to the main couple. And that is okay, because (while I am not a fan of the books) it knows what it wants to be, focused on the lead couple. The show, however, decided in S1 not to be that, but to also be that… and that is where things get confusing. You need the perfect balance of lead-focused and subplots. To be honest, S1 did that pretty well for me; even season 2 was not bad in that area. But S3 and S4 (and for me, it is Jess' fault) have a balance problem. When we complain that Polin does not have enough screen time in their own season, we are met with “but it’s an ensemble show”. However, when we are complaining about the prior leads not being there or not having consistent stories, “it’s not their season”. The 3 first seasons are not Ben seasons, and I saw him too much to my liking. S4 is not Fran season, and she took up half of part 2 (thankfully, she was glorious), S1 and 2 aren’t Pen season, yet she’s DRIVING the plot… production just does not know how to write an ensemble show but wants to be one so bad it is becoming a shit show.
I will give it a 6.5/10 because of the subplot and out of respect for John, but the LW plot is getting a lot of points off. Once again, in overall, when you look back it is a good season (it is too long even as a good season), but when you watched from a non GA point of view there is more cons than pros this season (and it is by taking off things I don’t like and only focusing on what is ACTUALLY wrong this season). I will retaliate that I am not the person this season was made for; however, they make me dislike Ben more and more as the season progresses. Part 2 is way less underwhelming than part 1, but the subplots are what save the day. I don’t think I will rewatch the main part of the season and will only fast forward to Polin and some subplots. I will also confess that I believe I would have enjoyed that season so much more if there hadn’t been a stupid fanwar. If the fandom that this season is made for wouldn’t be so mean and disrespectful to Polin/Luke/Nic. That is why I can’t wait for Philoise or Francheala, they're way more chill, enjoyable and nice people. Also, the constant comparison with S3, like S4, was superior; both seasons are great things, both seasons have bad things, and in the end, it depends on what you enjoyed the most. I remember S1 suffering from the same thing because Kanthonys had to prove S2 was the best and “WAY BETTER” than S1. I truly believe that fan war (and Jess Browell) are killing the show little by little, and the last seasons are sadly going to fall short of the standards. And that is actually sad.
