Match of the Day matchpack: England vs. Italy
A recent poll reported that just three percent of the nation think England will win the tournament - that's less than the respective hopes of Japanese and Australian fans.
And that pessimism seems justified despite the presence of exciting players such as Adam Lallana, Ross Barkley and Raheem Sterling - players who were nowhere near the starting XI a year ago and have helped to reinvigorate the team.
But Italy have their own problems: they lined up a pre-tournament warm-up match against Luxembourg in order to enjoy a multi-goal thumping, but were held to a dispiriting draw far more worrying than England's stalemates against Ecuador and Honduras. Now they have failed to win their past seven matches.
The situation on both sides will clearly contribute to a huge amount of nervousness; but that's just the start .The hot, humid weather in the jungle city of Manaus, combined with the fact that neither side can afford to lose (Uruguay's presence in the group means qualification will be extremely tough) means that this is likely to be one of the cagiest matches in the entire group stage.
TEAM NEWS
Captain Steven Gerrard, right-back Glen Johnson and striker Wayne Rooney are the only likely survivors from England's last World Cup starting XI likely to take part on Saturday, with Sterling expected to start following hints by manager Roy Hodgson this week. If Danny Welbeck shakes off an injury he will start on the left; if he doesn't then Lallana could come in. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is recovering well from the injury picked up in a warm-up match, but is not expected to be ready to play any part in England's opening game.
[ITALY SCOUTING REPORT]
Italy left-back Mattia De Sciglio was ruled out on Thursday with a muscle strain, so Cesare Prandelli will have to rejig his defence. Ignazio Abate and Giorgio Chiellini could both fill-in in an orthodox back four, but Prandelli could also be tempted to go with a three-man back line. Mario Balotelli will lead the attack, with Daniele De Rossi anchoring things behind him, while despite some rumours Pirlo is expected to hang on to his spot in the centre of midfield.

Match of the Day matchpack: Spain vs. Netherlands
Spain face the Netherlands in a Group B opener which, almost unbelievably, pits the 2010 finalists against each other three years and 11 months after Andres Iniesta made his nation world champions with a winner deep in extra time.
The two finalists facing each other so early on is a unique situation: getting to the final of the previous World Cup almost always guarantees seeding for the next edition of the tournament - but the Netherlands dropped out of the world's top seven nations on the crucial cut-off date of October 2013.
That left them in the pool of second seeds - and there were collective gasps at the glitzy World Cup draw in the winter when the Oranje found themselves in the same group as Spain.
The seeding is a fair reflection of form, however: after that final at Joahnnesburg's Soccer City, the Dutch side's form declined, so much so that they lost all three of their group stage matches to crash out of Euro 2012 at the same time as Spain were on their way to winning their third consecutive major tournament.
Louis van Gaal has since restored some pride - the team won nine out of their ten qualifying matches to make it toBrazil in style - but the defending champions are, rightly, hot favourites to get their World Cup campaign off to a winning start.
TEAM NEWS
Diego Costa is the big new face in Spain's tournament-winning side, leading an otherwise familiar line-up in Salvador with defenders Cesar Azpilicueta, Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, and Jordi Alba in front of goalkeeper Iker Casillas, and the dynamic midfield of Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets, Silva, Xavi and Iniesta helping Costa unlock a Dutch side set-up to counter.
The Dutch side will include include a rejuvenated Wesley Sneijder, who has bounced back from losing the captaincy and his place in the side to take a key role as provider for Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie. Sneijder will play just in front of midfield enforcer Nigel de Jong - fortunate to stay on the pitch in the 2010 final after a kung-fu kick on Alonso - and Jonathan de Guzman (if fit) or Jordy Clasie. Jor Ron Vlaar will lead a back line including the promising Daley Blind, son of Danny who becomes Dutch coach in 2016.
World Cup 2014 Top Teams: Group A - Brazil
Team profile
As hosts to the FIFA 2014 World Cup, Brazil is keen on avoiding what happened 64 years earlier in the Maracana Stadium - losing the World Cup final at home in 1950 against Uruguay. The quality of the team is really high and expectations are even higher. Most fans believe that only 7 victories in a row, culminating in a victory in the final, is an acceptable outcome.
Strengths: quality of the team, immense experience of coach, Luis Felipe Scolari
Weaknesses: the immense pressure on the team can without a doubt easily backfire
One to keep an eye on: Willian
Possible line-up:
Wolrldcup14brussels projection: predicting the result of the Brazilian campaign might be one of the most difficult tasks: if Spain fails to win Group B, Brazil-Spain could easily take place already in the Round of 16, eliminating one team which definitely has a chance for final glory. Our prediction is that Brazil will beat the Netherlands in the Round of 16 and will cruise through all the way into the final, where they will beat arch rivals, Argentina in a penalty shoot-out.
Hilarious Ronaldinho twin at Argentina training. MUST watch!! Messi just cannot stop laughing....

World Cup 2014 Top teams: Group E - France
Team Profile
After already eliminated in the group stages of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, France is certainly motivated to make up for that rather bitter experience.
The performance of Les Bleus will largely depend on how well Karim Benzema, Paul Pogba and Mathieu Valbuena can perform throughout the tournament. The injury of Franck Ribery is definitely a big blow for the whole squad which won't be an easy task to overcome. Under the coaching of 1998 FIFA World Cup winner Didier Deschamps, France should make it quite far in World Cup 2014 though.
Strengths: good midfield (Cabaye, Pogba, Matuidi) which can assist Benzema well, relatively easy group and fixture
Weaknesses: strong team chemistry is not apparent, Ribery missing from the squad, no real leadership on the pitch
One to keep an eye on: Mathieu Valbuena (Olympique Marseille)
Possible line-up:
Worldcup14brussels projection: Quarter-finals. Les Bleus will easily beat Bosnia in the Round of 16 after topping Group E. However, they will lose out on penalties to Germany in the quarter-finals.
Only 2 more days to go, but you can already check out the ball to be used in the final!
Who do you think will make it there?
World Cup Facts

World Cup 2014 Top Teams: Group F - Argentina
Team profile
Argentina will be looking for a 3rd World Cup title in Brazil, on the land of its eternal rivals. Argentine glory would certainly confirm Lionel Messi as an all-time football legend but it will take more than a smile.
There’s a lot at stake for the Albiceleste at this tournament and this could actually turn against them. Their defensive line-up has not really been resolved since 2010 and even coach Alejandro Sabella admitted that the team lacks balance. Keeper Sergio Romero looks like a weak link but "Los Cuatro Fantasticos" (Messi, Di Maria, Higuain, and Agüero) will certainly cause trouble for any defence they will be facing.
The principle question around Argentina’s World Cup quest is whether Lionel Messi can rise to the heights of his idol, Diego Maradona, lifting the World Cup trophy in Brazil. A whole nation’s fate will rest on La Pulga...
Strengths: Lionel Andrés Messi, massive firepower in attack, relatively easy group and possibly easy match in Round of 16 (vs. Switzerland?)
Weaknesses: Messi was out of form for much of the season, no real balance in the team, goalkeeper Romero can be a weak link (only made 3 appearances for Monaco this season)
One to keep an eye on: Ángel Di Maria (Real Madrid)
Possible line-up:
Worldcup14brussels projection: Semi-final. The Albiceleste will progress through Group F and will easily beat Switzerland in the Round of 16. Messi will lead Argentina to a famous victory against Belgium in the quarters before Spain ends Argentine hopes in the semis.
