One Night Only
I know you’ve been thinking ‘bout me,
thinking ‘bout me,
thinking ‘bout me,
He echoed an old friend of mine, a young man who caught my heart but slipped away into homosexuality. I will never know if my friend loved me beyond our friendship - it gratified me to imagine sunlit picnics in fields of grass, just him and I huddled close, smiles never leaving our faces. His hair sort of fell the same way and his features were a slightly rearranged version of one of the first boys that stole my heart. He was handsome enough.
And quite frankly, I was in a state of complete heartbreak and despair - just wanted to escape without completely ending the show, blip of the remote, removing all future events. It was just me and him, sweating, in the fading light of the evening, and it was all I could grasp onto in nights of silence and swollen worry. His face over mine, focused, yet calm. Not his first rodeo. And I could tell.
Tears pooled at the edges of my eyes as I sat on the edge of my bed, the same mattress, different sheets, different room, different building, two years away from the faded negatives of his skin and his lips and his eyes. Never to be seen again. My heart would stop cold when we’d pass my old town, the tangle of suburban houses quietly calling my name. Would he sit at the kitchen table with his family, spooning a bowl of cereal, and silently retracing my curves? Crinkling his eyes at my multi-orgasmic body seemingly made of light, the way I tilted my head sideways when listening, the hours we talked about everything and nothing?
He lives in my chest and speaks up in desolate moments, when everything is too far away and I can’t sleep at the right time. He stands behind me in the bathroom, looking into the mirror with a bit of a smirk. I close my eyes and recreate his tattoos, unlike anything I’d ever seen up close - an unfinished sleeve, a painted leg. The delicious curve of his bulge in his fitted boxers. The way he spilled on me, hot, uninhibited, as I lay gasping in a fog of pleasure.
And I don’t give a damn ‘bout your boyfriend
He can have you after I go
I’ma do all I can, whoa whoa…
How would we be around each other, after so much time has passed? Would we be stilted, or would everything fall back into place, like we never left? I edge myself to these false memories, of hours and hours spent together, endless loop of Miguel’s voice crooning in my ear as the cars rushed by on the freeway, walking and walking, waiting for him to return. It took less than an hour for us to fit hand in glove, running along old grooves, unseen connections of bliss. I had the potential to love him and I let go, very quickly.
It comforts me in pinched moments, that we didn’t share the same interests, that we disagreed on things here and there, that it may not have been something long term but all the same his body responded to mine in a perfect way, in a way that didn’t require work or questions or redirections or hesitations. We devoured freely, lovingly, presently. And maybe it would only be that potent in the span of a long overnight stay but I humor myself in the quieter nights, the nights where sleep eludes me, that we could still savor each others’ bodies in much the same way, hungry, erotically, in a foreign country two years later.
what a cold splash of water to the face
to see my outline in the mirror
after years of torture
bare-chested, clear quartz
illuminating the hue of my skin
boy shorts hugging my hips
a simple outline, modest curves
but wholly mine,
wholly original,
holy me.
UGLY IS YOUR SUPERPOWER
using social media before bed feels like:
our beloved 夜空ちゃん〜
really proud of this one. Tried a different style - aiming for architectural sketch pop art Frankenstein - and it worked!
some people scream
“you need to know me better”
he pierced me with bright blue eyes
framed by strong, black eyebrows
my favorite kind
so sure of themselves
in an air of self-confidence
save the arrogance
they locked eyes
and the girl fidgeted while her noisy
secretly virgin friend
shot down this man of a boy
he moved on, unconcerned
but it was all she needed
to know he was real.
he existed in pixels
while my real version,
the one who floated
as if he were dead
the one who floated
through my dreams and my regrets
my real version
screamed the same thing
when I looked into
those bright almond-shaped eyes
framed by strong, black eyebrows
he is my favorite kind.

the static moaned in my body
as I sat restlessly in meditation,
moving this way and that
but wholly dedicated
to keeping the eyes shut
as if that would suspend me
in a state of bliss
far above the ragged present
my thoughts darted in and out
of the folds of my brain,
insistent, longing
and I held on tight
to one wavering yet constant beat:
the pinch of inhale
and the release of exhale.
Reflections on Life (7/11/26)
This studio is perfectly akin to a prison cell, although it only feels that way because I’m here so often. Confined to 400-something square feet of solitude, I spend my days staring at the ceiling from my bed, keeping the shades drawn, and washing my dishes religiously after every meal like my mother is still shouting in my ear. Sometimes, if I listen closely, I can still hear her. She floats in the heavens like she has already passed away. Every time I mention her (“My mom liked this, she used to say that, blah blah blah”) I cringe a little, thinking of how distant we are and it feels like she really is dead. Sometimes I get a ping from the heavens, maybe once every few months, a timid check-in that usually ends in 10 messages or so. I imagine her tucking into bed, Ginger fast asleep, an old-lady-dog version of my mom in some respects and in other ways, reminiscent of a child with her sparkly big eyes.
I am hit with a wave of loneliness and what I can only describe to be suppressed sadness, even though it feels like I don’t really have anything to be sad about. I am free to do whatever I want. No time constraints, which quickly becomes its own prison if I don’t remind myself to do things. I might be depressed but I might not be. It’s a sense of floating above the world, above the minions who shuffle to work every day and feed their families and long for more in the stagnant fog of it all – I used to be one of those worker-bees who cared what everyone thought and lunged for approval wherever I went. It’s starting to feel like Walden up here, and I can’t tell if that’s a good or bad thing.
I can sense it in Lauryn Hill’s songs. She floats above others with a sense of superiority, and while it borders on patronizing at times, I know she means well. I look out for all of you, whether you know it or not. She was so bright as a twenty-something, and it really strikes me in a personal way – how she regards the world, and most especially her own race, as poor animals – stretching, shrinking, scraping by. Full of potential yet almost as dumb as a doorknob. We didn’t start off that way. But we sure as hell have to reverse it before it does us in.
Most people will never know what the hell I’m talking about, but all that matters is I know what the hell I’m talking about. Maybe Alzheimer’s will come for me, but I doubt it would since my brain is so active all the time about things important and trivial. I mention Alzheimer’s because the album Everywhere at the End of Time popped into my mind a month ago after watching The Backrooms, which had a track of that album slipped in. I didn’t listen to the entire album and yet I knew that song in some deep, primordial vein of my mind, or perhaps my soul. Reading The Goldfinch really was good for me. It helped bring back my stream-of-consciousness type of writing that hones in on too many details. I love that style of writing. Perhaps I can send a prayer to Donna Tartt, wherever she may be now, and thank her for gifting me a skill.
And now I wonder who she received that skill from. God? Allah? Her mother? I think we’re compilations of all the things we go through in life, all the things we consume, and to a lesser extent, the people around us. We waver each others’ static waves with interference when we get closer. Sometimes the connection is so strong, it wavers even when the other person is miles away. Miles away in Texas. Miles away in Mississippi. Even in Japan, where the woman’s heart got broken and she swept herself up in work – just like her ex-lover – who toils away and staggers on in the heat of Hawaii, a few miles from me.
Writing this makes me feel a little less lonely. Whenever I write, there is a little gnome-like creature listening, usually on a chair, in a room that eerily resembles a therapist’s office (although I’ve never been to one in real life). I suppose it’s sliced together from images and clips in all kinds of movies, serious and humorous (Good Will Hunting) and I think to myself how grateful I’d be for someone like Robin Williams’s character to be my shrink. How he would expand my mind, but in a better, healthier way. I’m under the impression that we don’t need to shrink the mind. We need only to expand the parts that matter, and let the rest fall away in particles of dust. The sooner the better. There is too much life left to live.

No but seriously, I am quite grateful. Grateful for the fact that people talk more about mental health and somatic healing and vagus nerve and that sort of thing so I can be better than my parents. I can be silly as an adult and nobody can stop me. I get to feel sunshine on my skin every day. I have delicious food in the fridge that keeps me growing and moving. I have a plant named Henry in the bathroom. I can make artworks in a few hours (like magick!) if I wanted to. There are birdsong and trees rustling in the wind - nature’s music. There is music! The way a good song gives me chills. Lyrics and beat and all. I have two legs I can dance on. I have two arms I can cook with. I have a killer chocolate chip cookie recipe. I am alive. I am well. Everything is happening at just the right speed, and I’m lucky to be a human.
