Ophelia smirked, amused by his confidence, but he’d forgotten one vital step: he hadn’t set the rules… Whipping out her wand, she pointed it at the card, reciting a spell that would make it will a small, invisible symbol. All she would have to do once he placed it back in the deck was say Revelio, and the card would reveal itself. “Shall I continue, or do we both know where this is going?”

there was no denying her poor attempt at hiding a smirk as she took the   bribe   eclair, shaking her head slowly at peter’s attempt at swaying her  ——  he was funny, she’d always thought so, and as much of a little shit as the rest of the marauders. lily reckoned that’s why they stuck together  ——  funny, surprisingly endearing idiots were most likely drawn to each other.   ‘ ah, of course. since i’m probably one of the most virtuous people you know, you figured you’d bribe me with pastries, is that it ? ‘   and yet the head girl took a bite of the treat, humming to herself in momentary delight before she waved her free hand around.   ‘ c’mon, i’ll walk you back to the common room. consider me bribed. ‘

𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐄𝐃 𝐀  hand  over  his  heart,  acting  shocked.   “   ——   bribe  ?  never.  this  is  a  REWARD,   ”   peter  clarified,  taking  another  bite  of  the  eclair.  “   ——   a  reward  for  being  so  virtuous.  and  encouragement  to  continue  being virtuous.   ”   he  fell  into  step  with  her  cheerfully,  glad  of  the  companionship  back  to  the  common  room,  already  anticipating  his  triumphant  return  to  the  rest  of  the  marauders.

Brows furrowed and eyes narrowed, Cassius eyed his target tactfully. The professor’s lecture was mere background noise, the symptoms of Lycanthropy drifting through one ear and out the other. When the class was dismissed, he nodded for his mates to start back to the castle without him. He had a business proposal to make. “Hey,” he barked as he approached the Gryffindor. Twigs snapped painfully under his purposeful stride. “Peter, right?” It had been a great effort to memorize the name after hearing the professor say it earlier. “Heard you answerin’ that question earlier. You really any good at this shit?… How much you want for an essay?”

𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐰,  𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑.

               𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐃𝐈𝐃𝐍'𝐓 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐙𝐄  at  first  that  cassius  mulciber  was  talking  to  him.  in  fact,  he  didn’t  realize  that  cassius  mulciber  even  knew  his  name  until  he  said  it  out  loud.  he  stopped,  turning  to  face  the  slytherin  warily  and  folding  his  arms.  as  mulciber  continued  to  talk,  peter’s  brow  furrowed  more  and  more  in  disbelief.  he  wasn’t  sure  what  he’d  been  expecting  from  the  other  boy,  but  that  hadn’t  been  it.   “   ——   an  essay  ?   ”   he  repeated  dubiously,  mind  already  going  over  the  potential  risks  …  and  benefits.  writing  an  essay  on  lycanthropy  would  be  a  breeze  for  him.  but  could  it  implicate  remus  ?  and  did  he  really  want  to  be  helping  mulciber  ?   “   ——   oh,  dude,  you  don’t  want  me  writing  an  essay  for  you.  i  can’t  even  spell  lycanthropy.  like,  is  it  with  a  k  or  a  c  ?  and  don’t  even  get  me  STARTED  on  those  silent  g’s.   ”   he  grimaced  expressively,  raising  his  shoulders  almost  to  his  ears  in  a  theatrical  shrug.   “   ——   you  know,  one  time  mcgonagall  actually  asked  me  if  i  was  spelling  everything  wrong  on  PURPOSE  to  piss  her  off.  i  wasn’t,  by  the  way,  ”  he  added  after  a  short  pause.

𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤,  𝐒𝐈𝐑𝐈𝐔𝐒.

“You’re a bloody genius, Wormtail!” Sirius exclaimed, clapping Peter on the back. That was a rare compliment from Sirius, and perhaps a false one, seeing as it fully might not work, but Sirius Black would stop at nothing to try. He took a second, looking between the Willow and the squid. “Alright, the first thing is that we need them closer together. And since I’m doing the Switching, do you think you can levitate the squid close enough to the Whomping Willow?”

𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐰,  𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑.

               𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐃 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐃𝐋𝐘,  soaking  up  his  friend’s  praise.  whether  the  prank  worked  or  not,  his  suggestion  was  already  worth  it.  he  squinted  at  the  squid,  trying  to  gauge  how  well  he’d  be  able  to  levitate  it.  worst  come  to  worst,  he’d  drop  it  on  some  third  year,  and  then  they’d  all  have  a  laugh  anyway.   “   ——  reckon  i  could  give  it  a  SHOT,   ”   he  said  honestly,  rolling  up  his  sleeves  and  gripping  his  wand.   “   ——   you  sure  you  know  how  to  do  the  switching  right  ?   ”

Sure, Ophelia was curious - in the same way that she was curious about what pet rats got up to while their owners were away. It wasn’t a mystery likely to eat away at her, and even if it were, she would more than likely suss out the answers herself than admit to it. Her brow quirked in skepticism as Peter instead turned the tables on her. It was such a Gryffindor move, and in another circumstance, she would have laughed it off, but as it was, she was just bored and competitive enough to rise to the challenge. “Okay,” she shrugged, picking up the deck. “Pick one.” 

𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐰,  𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑.

               𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐇𝐄𝐌𝐌𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐍𝐃  hawed  theatrically,  fingers  hovering  over  the  deck  a  disproportionately  long  amount  of  time  before  he  finally  selected  one  from  the  very  middle,  his  hands  cupping  it  protectively  to  shield  its  identity  from  the  slytherin.  nine  of  diamonds.  he  glanced  up  from  the  card  to  her.   “   ——   alright.  picked  one.  now  what  ?  your  move,  genius.   ”

𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤,  𝐒𝐈𝐑𝐈𝐔𝐒.

Sirius chuckled at the image of the seventh year being left in a green house unsupervised with dangerou plants. “For a Ravenclaw, she’d have to be a bit dim to not recognize Devil’s Snare, wouldn’t you think? I am sorry I missed that, all I had was Potions and you know how Slughorn is. Bloody bore if you’re not a favorite.”

The two ambled down the grounds a bit more before Sirius answered his question, seeing the Giant Squid basking in the shallows of the Black Lake. “Switching spells,” he drawled, his eyes on one of the squid’s many tentacles, “A bit of magic here and there, and then I reckon a slithery friend of ours could have a new appendage.” His idea was absolutely ludicrous, no question about it, but the article in the Prophet had struck a nerve with him and he needed a distraction. A week’s worth of detention might just have been worth the thrill it would give him.

𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐰,  𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑.

               𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐑𝐀𝐍 𝐀  hand  through  his  hair  in  a  semi-conscious  echo  of  james.  “   ——   i  mean,  could  you  blame  her  if  she  was  distracted  by  THESE  stunning  good  looks  ?  ”   he  raised  his  eyebrows  and  wolf-whistled,  his  eyes  crinkling  in  laughter.  following  sirius’s  gaze  to  the  squid,  his  pale  blue  eyes  widened.   “   ——   shit,  the  squid  ?  would  that  work  ?   ”   but  his  thoughts  quickly  left  realism  in  the  dust  as  he  caught  sight  of  the  whomping  willow  in  the  distance.   “   ——   SHIT,  padfoot,  what  if  we  gave  the  willow  a  tentacle  arm  and  the  squid  a  branch  arm  ?  is  that  possible  ?  dude,  that’d  be  SICK  !   ”

Regulus wandered down the charms aisle, not looking for anything in particular. The first week of school was usually very slow for him. He got his work done quickly and didn’t need a refresher of the previous year’s material. Usually, he’d occupy his time with a few books from home. But this time he hadn’t been able to grab any. He’d left it to the last minute and his mother had been prowling around the house. He would rather chance the school library than run into her when she was in a mood. He’d just pulled down a book to look at when he noticed someone pass by his aisle for the third time. Regulus stepped closer to the Gryffindor and asked, “What do you want, Pettigrew?”

𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐰,  𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑.

               𝐀𝐂𝐂𝐎𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐄  slytherin,  peter  pretended  to  look  thoughtful.   “   ——   oh,  you  know.  world  peace.  the  cure  for  cancer.  really  been  craving  fizzing  whizzbees  lately.   ”   in  truth,  he’d  been  planning  to  meet  a  particularly  cute  hufflepuff  girl  to  study  together  —  although  unfortunately  it  looked  as  though  he’d  been  stood  up.  of  course,  he  wasn’t  about  to  admit  that.

Ophelia wasn’t quite sure the purpose of silly muggle card tricks. As if she was supposed to be amazed by what they called ‘magic.’ She had nothing against muggles, to be sure, but was this really what they considered entertainment? “Did you spend all summer learning that?” she asked, her tone obviously unimpressed before clucking her tongue disapprovingly. “The secret lives of the Marauders. Merlin, if only they knew…” 

𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐰,  𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑.

               𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑'𝐒 𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐖 𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐃  as  he  squinted  at  her,  affronted.   “   ——  come  on,  you’re  not  even  a  little  curious  how  i  did  it  ?   ”   but  he  only  appeared  put  out  for  a  few  moments  before  he  cocked  his  head,  mischievous  dimples  appearing  once  more.  “   ——   ALRIGHT,  then.  if  you  think  it’s  so  lame,  you  do  it.   ”   he  slid  the  pack  of  cards  across  the  table  towards  her.   “   ——   go  on.  tell  me  to  pick  a  card.   ”

Lessons were done for the day and, considering Sirius had decided that doing homework was a waste of his time, he and Peter had gone for a walk around the grounds. The September air was brisk, though that’s how Sirius liked it, and the leaves had already begun to change, some even littered the grass. The pair walked along lazily, and if Sirius had had a tail, it’d have been bouncing along behind him, without a care in the world. 

“How were lessons today, Wormtail?” He asked the boy next to him, as theirs seemed to not line up where they had many together. “Dull? Mine were a bit dull, could use something to bring a little more excitement, if you my drift.” 

𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐰,  𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑.

          𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐇𝐑𝐔𝐆𝐆𝐄𝐃 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐃𝐋𝐘,  gazing  at  the  movement  of  the  whomping  willow  in  the  distance.   “   ——   that  ravenclaw  girl  yasmin  almost  got  STRANGLED  by  devil’s  snare  in  herbology  today,  so  we  got  the  rest  of  the  period  off  while  sprout  took  her  to  the  hospital  wing.  i  swear,  padfoot,  taking  newt-level  herbology  was  the  best  decision  i’ve  ever  made.   ”   at  the  mention  of  excitement,  his  attention  turned  back  to  his  friend,  his  eyebrows  lifting  in  curiosity.   “   ——   though  i  reckon  a  little  more  excitement  never  hurt  anyone.  what'd  ya  have  in  mind  ?   ”

           remus pursed his lips together, seemingly disappointed. “damn, and here i was thinking i tricked you.” of course, he was teasing still, as he usually did with peter and the rest of the marauders. “you truly are, a mind-reader almost,” he said laughing, shaking his head as peter spoke again. “it does, but don’t let that stop you. you can be one of those people who perform on the sidewalks, you know? get some money for being magic.”

𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐰,  𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑.

               𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐀𝐃𝐎𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐀  solemn  expression  that  did  little  to  smother  his  laughter.   “   ——   patience,  young  grasshopper  lupin.  maybe  someday  you’ll  reach  my  level  of  trickery.   ”   he  stuffed  the  crumpled  box  of  cards  back  into  his  pocket.   “   ——  yeah,  good  idea  !  i  should  go  tell  mcgonagall  i’ve  finally  figured  out  what  i  wanna  do  after  hogwarts.  she’ll  be  THRILLED.   ”

there were a few things certain in life  ——  death, people getting punched during a heated game of quidditch, never finding a lighter when you need one   and   finding one of the marauders up past curfew  at least  once a week. in the three years the redhead had been patrolling, it happened like clockwork  ——  she wasn’t sure she had a keen eye for spotting them, or if they’d gotten sloppy over the years. eyes rolled back into her skull as lily sighed, a smile spreading on her lips even as she gazed up at the ceiling for a second, then  ——   ‘ first off, yeah, i do. ‘   eyes traveled to peter’s face, head tilting as a curtain of red hair fell danced over her face, teeth catching at her bottom lip.   ‘ second  ——  do you know how many detentions i’ve let slide this week, peter ? ‘

𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐰,  𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑.

               𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐃𝐈𝐃𝐍'𝐓 𝐋𝐄𝐓  his  grin  slip,  merely  lifting  one  shoulders  in  a  crooked  shrug  as  he  pulled  an  eclair  out  from  his  armful  of  treats  and  handed  it  over.   “   ——   oh,  not  ENOUGH,  i’m  sure.  they  say  forgiveness  is  a  virtue,  you  know,  and  you  can’t  ever  be  too  virtuous,  can  you  ?   ”   he  helped  himself  to  an  eclair  as  well,  raising  it  in  a  toast  before  taking  a  bite.   “   ——   not  to  imply  you’re  NOT  virtuous,   ”   he  added  on  through  a  mouthful  of  pastry,  eyes  wide  and  earnest.   “   ——  you’re  probably  one  of  the  most  virtuous  people  i  know.   ”

𝐥𝐮𝐩𝐢𝐧,  𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐔𝐒.

          remus bit the inside of his cheek, trying his best not to laugh at peter’s sudden change of demeanor. of course he just wanted to have peter think he messed up the trick for just a little bit longer, what type of friend would he be if he didn’t mess with peter? remus laughed at his question, finally letting the act fall. “i’m just kidding, pete. that was my card,” he laughed, shaking his head. “you’re the next houdini.”

𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐰,  𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑.

               𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐊𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐓  remus,  nonplussed  for  all  of  five  seconds  before  his  face  quickly  shifted  back  into  an  expression  of  pure  triumph  with  a  crooked  grin  so  easy  you’d  doubt  it  was  ever  gone.   “   ——  AHA  !  tricked  you,  ”   he  declared,  although  the  quick  flush  that  rose  to  his  cheeks  said  otherwise.   “   ——   in  fact,  i  always  knew  it  was  your  card.  why  ?  cause  i’m  magic.   ”   he  slid  remus’s  card  back  into  the  deck  and  gave  it  a  quick  shuffle  thoughtfully.   “   ——  you  know,  i  feel  like  that  line  works  a  LOT  better  for  muggles.   ”

               𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐊𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐇𝐄  was  busted  before  lily  even  saw  him.  it  was  supposed  to  have  been  a  clear  trip  from  the  kitchen  back  to  gryffindor  tower,  according  to  the  map,  but  an  unexpected  close  encounter  with  mrs  norris  had  forced  him  to  take  a  detour.  apparently,  directly  into  the  path  of  one  redheaded  prefect.  he  gave  her  a  cheeky  grin,  waving  cheerily  as  if  it  wasn’t  over  an  hour  past  curfew.   “  ——  evans  !  fancy  an  éclair  ?   ”   when  it  came  to  avoiding  detention,  peter  wasn’t  above  bribery.   //   @withcringflowcrs
