Finally Finished!

I didn't have time to photograph my cousin with the book in the end, so I decided to make some fun GIFs until I can find the time to photograph him. Unfortunately the frames are quite irregular because I didn't have my tripod at hand, but I kind of like the quirky touch it gives.

WEEK 12 | LAST CLASS

In todays class we worked on both our personal project and the group project.

For our group project all of us had their on task to do. Alexa and I was creating the ai. files for the title to be printed in vinyl. We both had to figure out the measurements we wanted to have and to fit it within the restrained of the vinyl size and printer. We found the biggest and the best size for the type set. Hopefully it will work out fine, when Andy prints it out. For my personal project I printed out a rough prototype of the book. I had feedback from Andy and some of my peers, which helped me to go forward with my final book. I just have to wake up my life and finish the book and print out the final asap.

Week Twelve - Posters

Working on the posters for the exhibition today. We decided to use a photo of Indra’s project as it really opens up the question of what is a book in the age of the internet.

I used the Blackletter font that we have chosen for the window display (Brokenscript) and dispersed it based on a four-way fold that we will use for our catalogues.

I also included the information of time and place.

Web design

Group project

As the artworks are too tiny to display, our group and Andy suggested making a website with QR codes for the exhibition. Lulu and I are responsible for web designing. We had a meeting last week, discussing how we want to design the website. We both agreed to keep the web design as simple as we can because we only know the basic knowledge of Dreamweaver. We will make a homepage and individual pages for each book. These are some layout we made:

After consulting with Andy, he liked the layout on the bottom left and suggested us making a landing page for mobile version. He also mentioned that we needed not to make a website as he wanted us to focus more on the exhibition. Therefore, all we need to do now is to make a mobile layout and email him a pdf file.

Week Eleven - group work

Today we met outside of class to discuss the front display and talk about the posters and the website. Andy printed out some photos of the exhibition windows and we cut and paste some different typefaces to test out sizes and styles.

I then did a rough sketch with a white gel pen of the typeface we have decided works best. It is a black letter, but simpler, longer and more narrow than the previous one.

Post digital advertising?

Weird AF billboards at my train station talking about post-digital experiences and somehow trying to link them with skincare ...

To me it just felt so forced, or like I was missing half the context...

I feel like whoever designed these was trying overly hard to empathise with a younger generation and missing the mark. A bit like a parent trying to act ‘cool’ around their teenage child’s friends

Artist Research - Dan McPharlin

In his collection Analogue Miniatures, Artist Dan McPharlin takes old technologies and turns them into paper models. This was one of my inspirations for my major bookwork. I was really interested in the way he has taken an electronic object and turned it into something fully analogue and non-functional

Inspirational Artists - Papier Machine

Something I came across towards the beginning of semester that was one of my inspirations to get me going in the direction I am in now.

Marion Pinaffo and Raphaël Pluvinage, or Papier Machine, combine mechanics and electronics with paper, using metallic ink to create circuits.

I love the way the combine electronics with something so crafty and analogue.

These projects give kids an alternative to entertainment from screens, while also helping them experiment with and understand machinery and circuits.

Week ten - sprint prototype and discussion

Today in class, after working on our group projects, we were given some time to work on our books and then were able to discuss our projects with the group. We were able to give each other some constructive criticism and help build on / draw out each other’s ideas.

It was great to be able to see everyone else’s projects and where we’re at. The theme of post-digital is so broad and everyone has honed in on one unique topic within the theme.

Week ten - test results

Here are the results of the vinyl test. The block colour background with the cut out letter proved problematic to apply to the window but created an interesting shadow effect. I think we may need to go with just sticking up the letter form itself, as it is much easier to apply without warping and bubbling. We will need to do some further planning and revision. We were able to find some interesting results though.

Week ten - group project Vinyl

In today’s class we tested out the vinyl cutter for our window display. We made some plans based on the measurements and worked out that we will need 11 pieces of printing vinyl to go across the glass of the exhibition, which is actually perfect because there are exactly 11 characters (not including spaces) in the title ‘Wot is a Book?’. This way we are able to have one letter per piece of vinyl and not have to worry about having bits of a letter on seperate pieces.

Week Nine - spread layout

I am coming back to my plans of the layouts for my spreads and thinking more about how I can communicate my idea in the simplest possible form. I am aiming to push the idea ‘until it breaks’ as suggested by Andy in our consultation.

My current process in planning for this piece is doing rough layouts and brainstorming, doing some research and experiments, learning from those, and coming back to layouts and brainstorming.

It is proving to be a really long process, but has been effective in helping me draw out new ideas, discarding irrelevant and weak ones, making my idea stronger and more to the point.

I still have a long way to go before finalising my ideas, but I feel that I am on the right track
