Emma Monama, is a researcher at the African Centre for Migration and Society (ACMS), at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. She holds a Master of Science degree in Geography (Wits) where her dissertation explored the relationship between race, space, and class in post-apartheid South Africa. In particular, it focused on the use and imagination of public spaces and the challenges they present for rethinking the post-apartheid landscape in creating an "integrated society".
Before joining ACMS, she worked as a researcher at the Public Affair Research Institute (PARI) where her research looked at institutional dynamics within local governance, particularly in the context of mining development. She was also involved in work which sought to understand the relationship between state institutions and civil society organisations.
Her research interests include space, place, and identity; the politics of climate change; mobility, difference, and governance. Her current research seeks to interrogate and understand how difference is constructed and negotiated in everyday life, and how the rural/urban binary shapes spatial planning policies in post-apartheid South Africa.
She will join us in conversation about the use of objects to transpire spirituality and the paradox between the material and immaterial...

Anne Historical is the occasional working name of Bettina Malcomess.
Bettina Malcomess is a writer and an artist.
Malcomess performs under the name Anne Historical.
Her work is interdisciplinary, collaborative and site-specific, working with ways to visualise and imagine the minor histories of spaces. Projects combine artistic practice and research, and she has written extensively for artist’s and critical publications. Not really trained as an artist, Malcomess / Historical is essentially self-taught, with a strong grounding in critical theory.
Malcomess's work as a writer is a central component of her practice, and she has been part of producing several substantial publications that cross disciplinary boundaries between art, architecture and anthropology, but also fiction and non-fiction. She is the co-author of 'Not No Place: Johannesburg, Fragments of Spaces and Times' (Jacana, 2013) with artist Dorothee Kreutzfeldt. She is currently visual editor of the book 'Routes and Rites to the city - Mobility, Diversity and Religious Space in Johannesburg' (2014 - ongoing ), to be published by Palgrave in 2016.
