The majority of them left with time. The others became quieter, easier for the patient to manage that he could be admitted back into the real world.
Oh, well that's good news. I suppose there comes a point in every patient's progress where it's easier for them to continue recovery in the real world so they can be more appropriately reintegrated with society. Makes you wonder about the poor patients trapped here-- it can't be easy being here 24/7.
The voices in their head. It was just a matter of soothing them in order to bring out the fragile soul underneath.
Only soothing them? Not removing them entirely?
It varies by the patient. Some are unable to help themselves without a trigger.
And this patient that you helped in just a matter of months, what was his or her trigger?
To be quite frank with you, I’ve got a patient released from this institution in under a few months. My therapy is effective, challenging perhaps, but it helps who I take under my care.
Quite, quite. I wasn't meaning to question your methods. You're of the guidance school of thought, then? And by that I mean you believe a patient's recovery is led by the therapist and their methods, rather than the patient themselves?
I think it’s more of a stereotype that has shaped our modern world. Everything is about money, power, or sex. The patients we have here are not unwise in which they disregard it, but instead attribute it to us for they believe they do not need our help or the latter, that we are only here to serve them because of our paycheck at the end of the week.
I can't tell if you're a pessimist or a realist, but either way I can't help but think your patients must find therapy more challenging with you than with any other therapist here.
Nicely done. [She rolls her eyes, but smiles good-naturedly.] I’ve been here five or six months, I think? I find it doesn’t really help to count the days, since you don’t exactly know your release date.
Five or six months, well, that's not a long time or a short time. [What's the appropriate response? Saying it's a long time is only going to be depressing and saying it's a short time would only belittle Jade's experiences here] Do you have any big plans for when you get out? Personally I think I would visit a duck pond and feed them a lot of very nice bread. Not that that's a big plan, but I enjoy feeding ducks and there aren't many around here what with this being a salt water environment. Oh god, I just heard what I said back in my head, I'm hopelessly uncool. I bet you're going to go to a party and dress up and get hammered like anyone else would. Not that I recommend getting hammered, being a doctor and such. Don't drink. Don't do drugs. Stay in school and... that's all the overdone motivational talk I have right now.
Many of the patients tend to think that we’re picking and probing their mind for answers. In a sense, I guess I can’t disagree for we are trained and paid to explore the mind. Just how it’s done varies with the case given.
I never really understood the whole 'you only care because they pay you to care' mentality that a lot of patients assume. The money is only incidental really-- I can't imagine many wanting to go through so many years of schooling just for money, when there's much easier degrees that can earn much more money. I wouldn't do this if I didn't genuinely care-- well, I suppose there's a part of me that did it to please my parents, but I do genuinely enjoy it regardless.
As appealing as the idea is, sucking up is unnecessary. You’ll learn the ropes sooner than you expect. The work is exactly what I enjoy: a challenge. -And a dosage of manipulation, he finishes in his head-
Yes, I've only really met a few patients but they certainly do seem challenging, don't they? Mostly because they appear to actually just resent therapists, not because they have insurmountable problems.
Another therapist? I should extend my hand of welcome to you for I am one as well. Started a couple of months ago.
Well, I suppose I ought to be sucking up to you in order to learn the ropes a bit better. How do you find the work here?
[He pulls a face] …thirty…. weeks, you mean?
[A scoff] Well, whatever. So, I take by the vacant expression you’re a talk therapist? It seems to be a look widely used among your kind.
That I am, and if I look a little vacant then I suppose it's because... [Don't say "because I'm high as a blimmin' kite"] talk therapists do more talking than listening? Our role tends to be more of a guiding one rather than anything so bossy as talking constantly. And in any case once I start talking I tend to find it quite difficult to stop, so it's probably for the best that I listen more than talk in sessions. Can't imagine many patients being too pleased if I just talked their ear off for an hour every other day. Was I going somewhere with this? I think that was leading up to an introduction but I forget how. I'm Wren, anyway, and I am indeed a talk therapist. I imagine you're not, given your tone?

[ Kai sits a bit frozen as the man speaks almost without a pause or breath? Was he even breathing? Though when the man introduced himself, he folds the book closed, keeping his slouching position back on the chair with a knee folded up. Giving a small shrug and a shake of his head, Kai looks up to the enthusiastic therapist. Yes, he could tell he was a staff member now, even if he thought he was possibly a patient at first at a passing glance. ] Oh uh it’s no problem really. I just moved in anyway so, didn’t really expect everyone to know me in the first place, except my therapist I guess or whoever they give my file to. [ He still wasn’t sure how everything worked around Belvedere, but at least his chat with Ava had lessened the feeling of complete ignorance. ]
Oh good, well I feel marginally less awful for not knowing who you are then. How are you settling in? I'm surprised by how easy it is. They haven't given me too many patients yet, though perhaps they're just waiting to see whether I can actually handle myself. Which I can. It's a nice place though, the atmosphere is a great deal homelier than the last place I worked at.
[He gives him a sidelong glance] Do I honestly look like someone who plays the fucking lottery? [He rolls his eyes]
But yes, you look about as new as a Pink and Crying. What are you, twelve? Don’t tell me you’re the new therapist? I swear to God they’re getting younger by the second these days.

[ Kai looks up from the book he’d been burying himself in - All the better to keep people from bothering him but the exclamation both illicit his attention and confuses him ] Uh, aren’t people more excited if they are the ones that actually won the lottery rather than losing it?
Well yes, that would be more exciting. But this is still quite exciting, because really-- what are the chances of correctly guessing all of the lottery numbers? I suppose it's a sign I should probably socialise myself a bit more, when the highlight of my week is this. Wren, by the way, Wren Phillips. I'm a therapist, still quite new so I apologise that I don't have any idea who you are. Haven't quite made my way through all of the files yet. Or many at all, really. Moving office is a lot like moving house, but with more alphabetisation.
[She laughs lightly, rolling her eyes.] You’re gonna have to get used to that; I don’t think I’ve ever met a patient who likes the therapists. Except for, you know, a mistaken few who think that sucking up will get them out of here faster. But they’re still here, just like me.
Well, I'm glad you're bright enough to understand that we don't discharge patients based on favouritism, but rather on the merits of hard work and progress. Have you been here long? You sound a little jaded. [He lets out an abrupt laugh] Ha! Jaded. Oh, sorry. You must hear that a hundred times a day.
