John Lloyd Young At The Space - Vegas Hero, Worldwide Soul
When it comes to a John Lloyd Young show, what happens in Vegas does not stay in Vegas.
Friday night's performance at The Space was enjoyed not only by those of us who were able to travel from near and far to be there in person, but also by friends and fans who were livestreaming from all over the United States and around the world, including friends in Japan who had finally been able to see him in person in Tokyo a couple of months ago. And JLY is a master at being able to sing to every person in the room AND those who are watching from afar.
He began the evening's Jukebox Hero set with a song that has quickly become one of our favorites, Hozier's "Too Sweet". JLY's version is infused with soul, and the perfect showcase for his rich voice. He then moved into his emotional rendition of "My Prayer", which always goes right to the heart.
He introduced his stellar Vegas band, led by David Inamine on bass, and including Cam Tyler on drums, Fred Schreuders on guitar, AJ Braman on keyboard, and Jon Celentano on saxophone and vocals. It is truly an out-of-this-world experience to hear this set with JLY's exceptional vocals backed by this particular band. Everything flows seamlessly, and enhances the beauty of the evening.
JLY mentioned that he is starting to perform a variety of newer songs that we have not heard him do before, as he continues to build his repertoire, and to stay tuned for even more of these new additions at upcoming shows. One of those newer songs, "Stand By Me", was up next...filled with joy as we all clapped along.
He talked about how his main vocal influence is Roy Orbison, which happens to be the same for Frankie Valli. He treated us to a powerful, soaring "Only The Lonely", followed by the unreleased Orbison gem "Say No More", which now has become a JLY song. I am still putting it out there in the universe...JLY is perfect to play Roy Orbison in the biopic that is now in the works. So I hope the powers that be are listening!
The next song was another recent addition, Patsy Cline's "Sweet Dreams". There is a special kind of angst that JLY instills in this one, that makes you feel every word and note deep down in your soul. And speaking of angst, one of my absolute favorites followed - "You Keep Me Hanging On". Most of the time we've heard this song on the radio with more of a pop feel, but JLY makes it grittier and more soulful - more like the fado-style music that he loves so much. No matter where else I hear this song, his version will always be the ultimate.
He teased that the next part might make the at-home audience a little jealous, as he ventured around the room to greet all of us with "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me". It really is always a thrill, and hopefully those who were livestreaming can also experience it in person soon!
We then entered the Jersey Boys portion of the evening, beginning with "Sherry", as JLY encouraged us to sing along. This was followed by a pair of "Eyes" - the ever popular "My Eyes Adored You", done beautifully, and the song that he joked will probably always stay in his set, "Can't Take My Eyes Off You". We certainly never get tired of hearing it, and it's become even more stunning over time.
The next song is extra special because it's one that JLY wrote, along with Tommy Faragher. "Slow Dawn Calling" has recently been brought back into his sets, and we are all so happy to hear it again. This song is filled with all of the emotions of someone who knows a breakup is imminent, with complete passion in his voice. It really should be released as a single, with the world hearing and experiencing JLY's many talents with some food for thought.
He followed with his breathtaking version of "The Air That I Breathe", then left the stage before coming back for an Italian encore.
"Alta Marea" is the Italian lyrical interpretation of the English song "Don't Dream It's Over", and JLY first performed it for the group of us who were on a tour of Tuscany with him a few months ago. This show at The Space is the first time that he's sung it since then. It was stunning then, up close during our private concert - and has only become more beautiful. In Italy he just had a backing track, while here he was accompanied by the full band, which made everything even richer. As much as I like the English version, I love the Italian one even more. I hope this one stays around in future sets (and possibly is recorded as well!) This one stays in your head long after the show, sung in the language of soul.
JLY closed out the night with "Maybe I'm Amazed", which is another personal favorite...and everyone enjoys hearing him rock out to end the performance on a high note. Don't tell Sir Paul...but JLY is giving him a run for his money!
John Lloyd Young continues to thrill friends and fans throughout the country and around the world, raising the bar higher each time as he blows everyone away with his incredible vocal range. I am so glad that we are on this journey with him, and can't wait to discover what magic and surprises he has in store for us!
