Hi! I’m writing a story at the moment in which grief (losing someone they loved but never told them) plays a huge part. I’m struggling a little with getting that emotional sadness across that it actually is sad and not just.. idk “making it sad” for sadness sake? Do you know what I mean? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Personally, I would focus on how this specific character grieves. Not everyone's process is going to look the same, and having your character stay, well, in-character rather than suddenly being replaced by the idea of a widow or orphan or what-have-you is going to make your story much more interesting and believable. Don't be afraid to throw other emotions in there, too! Have them be angry, fond, resigned. Grief is a lot more poignant when contrasted with other feelings.
