I should probably make a pinned post of my writing, shouldn't I? Most of these are free to read in online magazines; some require buying an anthology. Things you will find in these short stories include body horror, kid culture, unreliable narrators, food as characterization, bi joy, more body horror, xenolinguistics, estranged siblings, hauntings as a metaphor for colonialism, an additional fandom reference for every time I got "fandom references will date your work and alienate readers" as feedback, and more body horror somehow.

In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:

This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.

We need a fully funded and staffed FDA, and regulations with teeth - and that's exactly what we don't have under Trump. To make things worse, the CDC is no longer tracking these outbreaks. We're on our own.

I love this blog so much for basically being an enormous library of interior background references but MAN. There is something Vile and Poetic about that saying being painted on the wall of one of the bleakest-looking school hallways I've seen in a long time. It's like that poem about the stars being painted over in landlord white. Incredible.

there is a screen reader / magnification program that is the only one the low vision clinic knows of with these features and it is $650 Canadian Dollars behind specific approved vendors that require you to be geographically close to them and get government approval of a degree that I am only just now reaching after being visually impaired for going on seven years. I feel normal about this

if you can code a program that does any or all of the following:

Magnifies a display beyond standard options with keyboard / mouse movement inputs or voice commands,

Can read text on the screen,

Has different color filter options for text / background distinction,

Can change and magnify the cursor beyond standard amounts,

Works on Windows or more than just Windows,

Has a keyboard echo (says the character you've pressed on the keyboard out loud)

... there is a genuine, GENUINE need for you to code this and put it at a more accessible price point than $650 Canadian Dollars which I also just learned is a SUBSCRIPTION FEE AND NOT EVEN PERPETUAL. if you are reading this and able to code I am begging you. would genuinely change lives

I just saw a post about a low cost Open Source project for a kindle alternative... that seems like the type of group, coding and tech engineering that might tackle this. I'll see if I can find more info.

In BC there's a group of University / College students that make and repair assistive tech. if you DM me your province I can see if they have affiliates in other places.

If you like Wordle but you don't want to give the New York Times any money, I recently discovered that the Merriam-Webster website also has free word games! They have Quordle, which is "what if Wordle but you're playing 4 games simultaneously:

And Octordle, with, you guessed it, 8 games. And both Quordle and Octordle can have a classic version, Chill (more guesses), Extreme (fewer guesses), Rescue (the computer puts in 2-3 random words as your guesses and you have to take it from there) and Sequence (you play one game at a time, but your guesses on that game are counting towards your other games; you can only move on and see the next game once you finish the first).

I like Octordle Sequence best. Partner is into Reunion where you move the letters around to make words because it has cute little animals (who end up next to each other when you're done):

I can't remember what prompted me to put a Lily King book on hold at the library, but I'm glad I did, I've been really enjoying her work.
