I Must be Dead (open thread)
Jack barely noticed as the Wind gently picked him up and pulled him into the forest, back to the lake where he had woken. Back where it had started. A numbness settled inside him, and he stared at the ice for a couple of minutes before he even noticed he had landed.Â
The whispering of the trees stopped as the wind quieted, and the silence pressed against his ears. His breathing seemed loud. Too loud. His heartbeat—
Jack put a hand to his chest. No. Just the rise and fall of his lungs. No heartbeat.Â
The numbness faded, and suddenly fear and confusion were turning in his gut, morphing into a pool of anger. His head snapped up to the moon, the only being who had recognized him but now stood silent.
"What is this?" he whispered dangerously. “Answer! What have you done to me?!"Â
Not surprisingly, the moon remained silent.
"Am I—" Jack started to shout, before his volume dropped once more. “Am I dead?" He walked slowly away from the lake, sitting down against the closest tree. “I’m…. dead."
