Guess who just won the Pulitzer Prize in poetry, and guess who is reading this Thursday at Interlochen? You guessed it...Tyehimba Jess! Be there or be ▪️. If you can't be here in person, it will be available live via Facebook.
Julia Bohm of Ann Arbor has been selected as the ninth recipient of the biannual award.
It's finally official! The Interlochen Center for the Arts creative writing faculty is happy to announce the winner of the 2017 Virginia B. Ball Creative Writing Scholarship, Julia Bohm of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Julia's portfolio was chosen from a pool of 15 exceptional finalists from across the country and around the world. Julia will receive a $30,000 tuition scholarship and publication in the 2017 Interlochen Review.
Please join us in congratulating her!
We open March 1 with an excerpt from Garth Greenwell’s  What Belongs to You. This is in reference to the Bulgarian celebration of Martenista.
“There were martenitsi pinned to everyone’s clothes, small bundles of red and white yarn exchanged on the first of March, a ritual meant to encourage the year to turn. My own bag was covered with them; students had given them to me with great ceremony, with wishes of health and wealth and happiness, all day long (41).”
On Thursday, February 23rd, Greenwell, an alumnus, led a master class with creative writing students. His generosity and kindness of spirit emanated from him as he read an excerpt from his book and answered questions for a full-house reading at The Writing House. An interview with him can be found here. We look forward to his webcast that will be archived.
What Belongs to You has accumulated a long list of accolades—
Longlisted for the National Book Award in Fiction • Shortlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize • A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice • A Los Angeles Times Bestseller. Named One of the Best Books of the Year by More Than Fifty Publications, Including: The New Yorker, The Paris Review, The New York Times (selected by Dwight Garner), GQ, The Washington Post, Esquire, NPR, Slate, Vulture, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Guardian (London), The Telegraph (London), The Evening Standard (London), The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Miami Herald, The Millions, BuzzFeed, The New Republic (Best Debuts of the Year), Kirkus Reviews, and Publishers Weekly (One of the Ten Best Books of the Year).

Interlochen Coast to Coast
Today is our last day Idyllwild Arts Academy.  We have spent the last five days in the gorgeous mountains southeast of Los Angeles collaboratively writing a play with Idyllwild’s creative writing majors and a handful of their talented actors. Today will be spent on script re-writes and rehearsal.  Tonight the play will at 7:30 pm PT (that’s 10:30 EST), so send good vibes out to us around that time.
Meanwhile on the opposite coast, Interlochen creative writing seniors Annalise Lozier and Alexa Curnutte are in Miami preparing for their own performance. Annalise and Alexa did not make the trip to California with us because they are national finalists in the Young Arts Art and Writing Awards competition. They have spent the week in workshops and masterclasses with other finalists from around the country. Â We are sending good vibes out to them as they prepare for their 6 pm EST (3 pm PT) final reading, which will be livestreamed here:Â http://www.youngarts.org/ Â
We hope to share a recording of our collaboratively written play ASAP!
The morning wake-up playlist, curated by Shaun, Olivia, Tess, and Emily. Thus begins day #3 of our playwriting collaboration with Idyllwild Arts writers and actors. Â (The_Writing_Haus)Â
I am afraid Interlohen will reject me. Do you have any examples of student writing so I know what standard I'm competing with?
You can check-out some samples of student work in our online literary journal, The Interlochen Review, http://www.interlochenreview.org
This is your opportunity to compete for a $30,000 scholarship to Interlochen Arts Academy boarding high school.
TODAY is the deadline!!!!! Â Applications are due NO LATER THAN 11:59 pm tonight.
If you have questions or concerns about the contest application process, message us on Facebook by scanning the badge below, or write us at [email protected]
"If I were asked to name the chief benefit of the house, I should say: the house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace." --Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space
A friend of mine, who graduated from the Academy last year recently said:
Interlochen isn’t just “that boarding school in Michigan”. It is a haven where the essence of art permeates the very air you breath from the LA rotunda to the lakeside. Enjoy it while you can, because when you leave, you’ll miss every second of your time there. You’ve been given a great gift, don’t waste it.
