out of nowhere he said, ‘‘ eyes on the road, ’’ because by virtue of being in nikolai's car meant having his outline memorised and redrawn over the passenger seat. he could feel the weight of them against his skin and in his hair and everywhere they hadn't touched for the night, only to realise just how terribly it felt real. nikolai's undefeated face remained grinning. kenneth listened to him talk, and wondered to himself if nikolai remembered who he was really talking to. ‘‘ pity. ’’ the car rolled to a stop, just as his eyes rolled back to nikolai. what bemusement he could conjure made itself known in his impatient scowl, but as his door was opened out for him, he swept out with all the grace of a calculating vulture at the promise of something vile. standing inches apart, he stared up his boyfriend and pressed an accusatory finger into his chest.

‘‘ fine. but do anything stupid to me, and i will key your car. ’’ stifling his nerves, he felt the precise moment nikolai had shifted to stand behind him. kenneth let his eyes fall to a close, and leaned back into a lovely heartbeat before they toggled their way forward like one entity. ‘‘ man, is this the part where i tell a creepy anecdote about monsters in the dark? ’’
