okay just watched the scene where syd’s dad says “love you, chef” to syd and now i’m thinking of a love confession where syd just does something in the kitchen like handles a situation or cooks something so good or calms him down and while turning away to go back to work, instead of saying “thank you, chef” he accidentally says “i love you, chef” and walks away without realizing what he said but the rest of the kitchen is frozen around them and syd says “thank you, chef” reflexively until she processes what he said and calls out “back to work, chefs” so they all get through the busy night.

hours later when they’re closing for the night, the silence helps carmy realize what he said and he asks sydney if he told her he loved her and she says “yes, chef” with an awkward look because they’re going to address this apparently and he’s like “right, okay. yes” basically stammering through figuring out what to say because he can’t take it back because it’s true but he doesn’t want to make things weird between them because they’re business partners and sydney just tells him that it’s okay and nothings going to change and a part of him gets hurt a little because she doesn’t say i love you back so he’s on his way out after packing his shit up and sydney’s still in the kitchen and right before he makes it out, she looks up from cleaning up her last bit of mess and says “i love you too, chef”. the door shuts behind him but he turns and charges back in so quickly. they don’t kiss but they’re staring at each other from the front to the kitchen with these cute smiles on their faces and she nods and he nods and after a few minutes of smiling giddily at each other sydney says “goodnight, chef” and he smiles even more and nods “goodnight, chef” and they both can’t stop smiling for the rest of time the end
