Animated film, THE SECRET OF NIMH (1982).

My brother and I rented it once. I remember being pretty startled by it—this wasn’t Disney. It was darker, more serious.

Though the film was only a moderate success at the box office, it received critical acclaim, especially for the animation. And indeed it’s visually spectacular, with its celestial color palettes and the effective use of rotoscoping and backlit animation (for the glowing eyes).
