Hot take but rigid divisions between queer identities and heavily-policed labels that are treated like diagnoses are really, really bad.

Trans men have shared histories with lesbians who have shared histories with bisexual women who have shared histories with ace people who have shared histories with aro people have shared histories with gay men who have shared histories with trans women who have shared histories with nonbinary people who have shared histories with etc etc etc etc etc.

Labels are important for people who want them, but we need to stop treating sexuality and gender as rigid boxes and checklists.

yes. labels aren’t a fort you need to protect; labels are a pin you can add to your backpack to signal being part of something. You can, in fact, have more than one label (as a treat).

The human brain and the full spectrum of sexual orientation, romantic orientation, gender identity, (not to mention how those orientations intersect with gender. that’s its own can of worms) can not be neatly defined and categorized.

just because two people use the same label does not mean they are going to experience that identity the same way. Labels are guides we use to signify to ourselves and others an insanely complicated breadth of human experiences that encapsulate the physical , the emotional, and the chemical. That label may be the closest word those two people have for the way they experience their identity, even if they both experience that identity in many different ways.

up close, her eyes are hazy. they’re a color you can’t quite place, made all the more difficult by the glitter, sharp lines, and shimmering colors that adorn them, masking truth they don’t want revealed.

the voice that comes from their glossy black lips is deeper than expected, and though its tone is low it commands attention. those who know what she is stand in awe and support of her power. those who do not know her are entranced by her peculiarities, wondering how they can shave her down to fit into their worlds.

one tries to snatch at her and she dances out of the way, giggling, alert. they could feel the hunger radiating from his stare before he even realized he was staring. he makes contact with her hand and she whips around, her boots holding firm on the ground, and commands he let her go. he does. he stares into the fire of their gaze and seems to come to some sort of understanding that something isn’t quite right under the glitter and the gloss. he takes a step back and is swallowed into the crowd.
