N. Chandrasekaran, the Chairman of Tata Sons, has announced that he would step down from the prestigious position in early 2027, after nearly a decade at the top. Soon after the news broke, shares of several Tata Group companies, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Steel and Tata Power, tumbled, over uncertainty about who will take the helm next. August 13 is International Left-Handers Day. So what better topic to explore today than the fascinating world of left-handers! Yet they’ve always stood out, sometimes in admiration, sometimes in misunderstanding. Anthropic, Google and OpenAI have accused Chinese technology companies of improperly harvesting data from their AI systems, in violation of their terms of service, and using it to train their own models at a fraction of the cost. This process where a large AI model (the "teacher") trains a smaller model (the "student") to mimic its behaviour, is called distillation. While any illegal use of a service must be condemned, we are compelled to point out that this complaint reeks of hypocrisy! India finally gets a dengue vaccine! Recently, India’s drug regulator, the CDSCO, approved the country’s first dengue vaccine, Qdenga. It is an imported vaccine, made by Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda at its facility in Germany. It comes at a time when dengue cases around the world have increased 30-fold since 1960. Between 2023 and 2025, India alone recorded over 6 lakh cases and more than 800 deaths. Most stories about vaccines don't really need a deep dive. But this one is particularly interesting. For decades, scientists have been trying to develop a safe vaccine against dengue. The problem wasn't making a vaccine. It was making the right one, because the wrong one could be worse than no vaccine at all! And now that we finally have one, it might seem like an unambiguous win. The US State Department (the equivalent to India’s Ministry of External Affairs) recently released a report accusing Cuba of waging a “sustained campaign of subversion” against the United States. That may surprise you. After all, Cuba is a small Caribbean island that today is battling an acute economic crisis! The report, titled Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism, argues that Cuba has created "one of the single largest, most sophisticated and dangerous vectors for hostile foreign influence in modern American history". Given the seemingly harmless but poorly defined goal of making as many paper clips as possible, the AI ends up consuming every available resource, including the human race, to achieve it. Of course, it sounds like a ridiculously outlandish scenario. But that's what we were reminded of after a recent incident at the American tech company Hugging Face. In fact, the incident has sent shockwaves through the tech world. The Chief Information Security Officer at Zscaler described it by saying, "The reality is Pandora's box is open." While, the president of Booz Allen's national cyber business remarked, "We've gone from science fiction into reality." Hugging Face first reported the incident to the police in mid-July. But it was only last week that OpenAI revealed more details about what had happened. We can now piece together the full story. So what exactly happened? What is AI's alignment problem? An indefinite hunger strike has been underway in the heart of our country for over two weeks now. No, we're not talking about the NEET exam leak protests in Delhi. We're talking about a far less reported movement unfolding in Madhya Pradesh. Hundreds of people have been protesting through jal satyagraha (standing in water), chita satyagraha (lying on symbolic funeral pyres), and a symbolic faansi (hanging) satyagraha. The movement is led by social activist Amit Bhatnagar, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for over two weeks. Reports say that on July 19, police tried to remove protesters and carried out a lathi charge after people resisted. What are they protesting against?
