Hector Rendoza a.k.a. Wraith
"People think becoming invisible means disappearing. They're wrong. It means seeing what everyone else ignores."
Hector Rendoza has always had one of the most underrated mutations in Marvel. Originally, his abilities were essentially "turn invisible and intangible," which is already powerful, but rarely explored to its fullest extent.
To maximize his potential, I'd position Hector as the mutant equivalent of a ghost, intelligence operative, and dimensional scout.
Hector doesn't merely become invisible.
He shifts his body into a state that exists slightly out of phase with normal reality.
Immunity to conventional weapons.
Resistance to extreme temperatures.
Extended lifespan while phased.
Scientists eventually discover that Hector is actually interacting with a neighboring dimension known as the Ghost Plane.
While phased, Hector can perceive:
Residual emotions in locations.
He becomes one of mutantkind's premier investigators.
Hector can selectively alter his density:
Increase his mass to strike with incredible force.
Phase portions of his body independently.
Imagine Kitty Pryde's powers combined with Vision's density control.
The greatest revelation about Hector's powers is that he isn't disappearing at all. Every time he phases, he enters a parallel world existing milliseconds alongside ours.
Echoes of historical events remain visible.
Other intangible beings reside there.
Lost objects occasionally drift between realities.
This makes Hector uniquely qualified to explore phenomena no other mutant can.
Hector evolves into a quieter, more introspective character. Years of existing between worlds have left him with an appreciation for life's fleeting nature.
Protective of younger mutants.
Nightcrawler often jokes that Hector is "the only person who can literally ghost people."
Role Among the X-Men/Midnight Suns
Hector becomes invaluable as:
Search and rescue expert.
Ambassador to extradimensional beings.
When the X-Men encounter supernatural threats, Hector is usually the first one through the door.
Omega Potential: The Living Phantom
At the height of his powers, Hector gains complete mastery over his phasing abilities.
Temporarily remove objects from reality.
Open gateways to the Ghost Plane.
Become completely invisible across all spectrums.
Professor Xavier describes him as:
"A man who walks between moments."
Hector's greatest struggle is isolation. Every time he phases, he hears whispers from the Ghost Plane. At first, he fears he's losing his mind. Eventually, he learns they're the echoes of countless lives that have passed through the dimension over millennia. He spends years terrified of becoming trapped there permanently.
His defining moment comes when a young mutant asks:
"Are you afraid of dying?"
"After everything I've seen? No. But I'm in no hurry to get there."
In one possible future, Hector becomes known as The Ferryman.
Following the deaths of Professor Xavier and Dr. Strange, Hector dedicates himself to guiding lost souls and stranded extradimensional travelers back to their proper realities.
Legends spread throughout the multiverse of a silent man in a dark coat who appears whenever someone is hopelessly lost. Some say he's a mutant. Others claim he's become something more.
By maximizing Hector Rendoza's potential, Wraith becomes:
Marvel's premier stealth operative.
The X-Men's paranormal expert.
One of mutantkind's greatest unsung heroes.
His journey ultimately becomes less about becoming invisible and more about understanding what it means to exist at all.
"Most people spend their lives trying to leave a mark on the world. Me? I learned there's beauty in the things that leave no footprints at all."
