Dear Mom, thank you. Thank you for being a trailblazer. I know you have scars from the glass ceilings you shattered so that I wouldn’t have to, so that I would never know they were even there. I know how much they sometimes ache. Thank you, thank you for not settling, for teaching me how to dream, thank you for working so hard to make your dreams real. I know there were days when all you wanted to stay in bed. I know, I have them too. Thank you for teaching me how to get up, how to get out, how to feel the world with my palms turned to the sky, how to feed on the sun. You taught me how to need so little, by giving me so much. Thank you. Thank you for teaching me I am not just your daughter, but the daughter of those before you - of those who marched and fought and struggled. Thank you for teaching me humility, for teaching me that the world does not begin and end with me, that the world does not owe me a thing. Thank you for teaching me that respect and defiance go hand in hand, that I am a warrior, a trailblazer for future generations. Thank you for teaching me love. Thank you for loving me so completely. For loving every inch of my skin, and thank you for loving me, even when I made it bleed. Thank you for teaching me how to read. For teaching me how to find shelter in books, how to travel through words and sail through lives of characters. Thank you for reading poetry to me. Thank you for that Oxford dictionary I got at 15 and thank you for letting me spend hours flipping through it. Thank you for always letting me be me. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for pushing me to do things that terrified you. Thank you for letting me grow up, and yet also stay a child. You nurtured me, and sheltered me, and gave me the freedom to conquer the world. You showed me how to. You showed me that battles leave scars, but they heal and a little blood is not a scary thing. You showed me how to live with fear, how to feed on it, how to flourish. Finally, thank you for teaching me that I am worth a thousand kisses and promises made real, that I am worth more than pretty words. Thank you for teaching me the power of “no”. Thank you for teaching me how to treat my body like a home, and how to treat those guests that overstay their welcome. Thank you for teaching me never to lose myself, just to keep someone else. I love you. Fearlessly, the way you taught me.

Dahil tinuruan niya ako ng: ANATOMY: “Mata ang ginagamit sa paghahanap. Hindi bibig.” SANITATION: “Anong akala mo sakin, nagtatae ng pera?! HISTORY: “Noong bata ako, piso lang ang baon ko. Maswerte ka pa nga.” AGRICULTURE. “Kada butil ng palay na kinakain mo pinagtrabahuhan yan ng tatay mo. Ubusin mo yan!” GENEROSITY: “Ibigay mo yan sa kapatid mo kundi malilintikan ka saken.” INDEPENDENCE: ” Kung ayaw mo sumunod, bahala ka na sa buhay mo!” ASTRONOMY: “Para kang nasa buwan kung maglakad. Bilisan mo!” RELIGION: “Pag hindi mo inubos ang pagkain mo, paparusahan ka ni Lord.” SARCASM: “Ano? Bakit di ka makasagot! bakit di ka masagot?” Tapos kapag sumagot ka, “At natututo ka ng sumagot ha?!” MAGLAKWATSA: “Papunta ka pa lang pabalik na ako.” ELECTRONICS: “You’re Grounded! Hindi ka aalis ng bahay.” SELF ESTEEM: “Ayan Dyan ka magaling!” LOGIC: “Pag di mo nakita, makikita mo!” THEORY OF EVOLUTION: “Manang mana ka sa tatay mong unggoy!” SPORTS: “Tumakbo ka na. Pag naabutan kita, malilintikan ka!” BASEBALL: “Ibabato ko sayo tong hawak ko!” HYPNOTISM. “Makuha ka sa isang tingin!”
