Wyatt waited thirty minutes after basketball practice. He sat alone on the bleachers, letting his adolescent mind roam. When Wyatt thought that the only people left on campus were the janitors, he found himself on stage in the auditorium. A collection of empty seats and a single light from the ceiling were staring at him, and he mirrored the hollowness. Wyatt let a soft tune come to his ears; one that made him feel numb and afraid. His emotions then began to crawl to the surface of his skin.
The drink you spilt all over me.
Lover’s Spit” left on repeat.
Wyatt never let the image of New Years leave his mind, the way he convinced Robbie so well. A sport he seemed to dabble in. Sure, he felt shitty about it, but he loved it. He loved the way it made him feel.
My Mom and Dad let me stay home.
It drives you crazy getting old.
The night Wyatt and Robbie were supposed to be celebrating their youth turned into so much more. A night of recklessness transformed into a beautiful tragedy, and Wyatt felt dauntless.
We can talk it so good,
We could make it so divine.
We can talk it good how you wish it would be all the time.
Wyatt wanted everything, he knew that was his problem, and it was exhausting. He wanted the reputation, but he wanted the boy too. He was getting tired of the fact that he couldn’t have both.
The drink you spilt all over me,
"Lover’s Spit" left on repeat,
My mom and dad let me stay home,
it drives you crazy getting old.
These days were meant to be the golden days for the pair. Wyatt rules the school and Robbie was there by his side, that’s the way the story was meant to go. And where are they left now; now that love made sure it was noticed.
This dream isn’t feeling sweet
We’re reeling through the midnight streets.
Wyatt had easily thought he was on top of the world, with everything he had. He knew that he couldn’t be more wrong. At this point in his life, he wanted freedom from the social pressures he bestowed upon himself.
And I’ve never felt more alone,
It feels so scary getting old.
Wyatt could not figure out why he couldn’t love Robbie or why his high school reputation meant so much to him, yet he did know how shitty it felt. Youthful adulthood ruined Wyatt and he needed to find himself again, but he couldn’t without his best friend.
We can talk it so good,
We can make it so divine
We can talk it good,
how you wish you would be all the time.
If Robbie and Wyatt could grow together properly, they’d have it all. Why couldn’t it be that simple if that both wanted each other? Wyatt knew his ego was never that important.
This dream isn’t feeling sweet
We’re reeling through the midnight streets
And I’ve never felt more alone
Feels so scary getting old
Yet, if Wyatt let Robbie go, his ego was obviously a larger part of his life. He knew he had to give it up for Robbie, all of it. It drove him crazy, the tug-of-war in his mind.
I want them back,
The minds we had.
It’s not enough to feel the lack.
Wyatt and Robbie knew each other more than anybody else, nothing should’ve stopped them. That meant all of the girls, the thoughtless fucks, and the praise had to go in order for Wyatt to have genuine happiness.
You’re the only friend I need
Sharing beds like little kids.
We’ll laugh until our ribs get tired,
But that will never be enough.
A future for the two meant everything to Robbie, and Wyatt needed to give him that. Wyatt wants the best for Robbie, and this was it. Giving him the love he deserves, real love, the kind of love that makes you feel invincible. He need to tell Robbie that he was ready to give up everything, just to have him back.
That will never be enough.
