âI know. I know. Itâs okay.â She couldnât blame his rationality for being completely thrown out. The situation had been stressful, and she understood it, even if it scared her half to death then. All she wanted was for him to be safe. Cringing when he hissed over his lip, she patted his chest gently. âJust remember itâll all be over soon, and weâll never have to go through another blood moon again.â Thank god it only came once every one thousand years. They wouldnât be vulnerable in that way any more, at least, though she knew it wouldnât stop Wyatt from worrying. The Spring Fling bombings happened when they were all fully powered, and it had been just as devastating. The danger would always be there, supernatural enhancements or not.
Which caused another worry to grow. She knew heâd been scared, and even if it hadnât already been clear before, she knew he had every right to be. But a part of her wondered if heâd be too afraid to step outside the house at some point. Danger didnât strike just because there was an event happening, even if there was a higher probability for it then. Eventually, they would have to keep going to work, to school, to wherever. Like she told him earlier in the night, she wanted to keep living. She didnât want to be stuck inside a house, hoping nothing bad happened. âI know a lot happens here, butâŚyouâve never thought of moving, have you?â she asked cautiously, scared to hear his answer.Â
Hollow Grove didnât always used to be so bad. It was just in recent years that strikes had increased, and she wanted to believe it would go back to being peaceful again at some point, even if they had to face turmoil like tonight before it could happen. They had to be due for a win soon. But despite it all, she knew it was safe here, compared to out there where they would face just as much danger, if not more. Plus, her family, her friends, her pack, her workâŚit was all here. The idea of Wyatt becoming concerned enough to just leave with Mason and get out of dodge sent her heart racing and made a pit form in her stomach. Sheâd been so scared of losing them one way tonight, that it hadnât hit until now that she could lose them in another.
When he took the ice pack from her, she sighed, a smile growing on her face that mirrored his as he kissed her nose. âI know, I justâŚwant to help, thatâs all. I hate seeing you hurt. Your face, however, is always beautiful. In fact, if it hadnât been because of a fight for your life, I would dare say they almost make you lookâŚkind of rugged,â she told him with a playful grin, fingers brushing his hair back. A stupid thing to think about when sheâd damn near had a heart attack seeing him in the fight, but he was safe with her now. It made it easier to be light-hearted, to joke and try to make him smile. âReally? Because that makes me think he gets it from you.â Wyatt hadnât had it easy for a while, she knew that. He had to adapt to losing a pack and a family, as well as gaining a son. Then again, it made her sad to think that Wyatt couldnât see the similarities, and she tried not to read into it. Heâd had to adapt through a lot, and she knew he had a lot to work through still, but she wondered if that meant he wasnât, or would ever be, that content after facing what he had. âHe deserves something stable, something he can look back on fondly when he gets older. I hope he knows he has people to fall back on to help him get that.â She gave Wyatt a small grin, toying with the fabric of his shirt. âSame goes for his dad, too.â
Her words gave him relief but also a hint of sadness. It was true this would be the only time in their lives that they would experience the blood moon, but it also made him sad to think that some day the world would not have Luna in it. When it came to him, he didn't much care seeing as how he'd grow tired of life in the end, but Luna was so much more. She made the world as a whole better, not just his. He didn't say anything to her about it since it was a silly thing to get sad over, but her next words had him paused as he actually thought on it.Â
"Only on nights like this to I think of leaving Hollow Grove." He rolled his eyes thinking about his fight with Evie when he'd first arrived. Mason had been left alone, she'd been taken, and he had wanted to get the hell out of there, throwing her "safe space" back at her. "But even then, it would only be for a bunker in the middle of Antarctica to avoid every hint of danger, so... no. I haven't given it actual thought. This place is home now." It was the only place that had felt like a home after he'd lost his pack. "Besides, there's one person here, I'd never leave without." He smiled at her and tucked a few strands of hair behind her ear.Â
"Rugged, huh? I think I like looking rugged. Usually I just look like a pretentious trust fund guy, playing at a normal life." He leaned back and pulled his shirt over his head, letting it fall to the floor as he revealed the huge bruise already spreading over his ribs on his left side. "Now how rugged do I look? Enough for you to want to distract me from this night with your feminine wiles?" He welcomed the joking and light air of the conversation, letting it distract him from his worry.Â
When she mentioned Mason getting his adaptability from him, Wyatt shook his head. "It took me years of guilt and nightmares to adapt to my new life without a pack. I still have those nightmares. It also took the love of a good woman for me to feel deserving of anything again." He held onto her hips with a light squeeze as he smiled at her. "A woman who made me see that there was something left in me worth living for. And I intend to thank her every day for it."
