Wynafryd Manderly is, to most that know her, the perfect daughter. She’s beautiful, polite, intelligent and has every bit of the Manderly charm that living in the border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed your whole life gives a person. Growing up the first granddaughter to the Starks’ CCO had it’s challenges, as Wynafryd was usually expected to excel in school and any extra activities she took on, but it was never anything she didn’t take in stride and learn from so that the next time she did it she’d be better. The day her younger sister was born Wynafryd couldn’t have been happier. Throwing herself headfirst into the older sister position, becoming fiercely stubborn, controlling and protective in the process. Behind her sweet smile and perfectly set hair however, lies a cunning and beastly woman. Being fairly close to her grandfather, Wynafryd early on learned from him how to manipulate situations to her advantage and to always look for the silver lining in things. She’s incredibly loyal as well - there isn’t anything she wouldn’t do for someone she cares about. Although she tried her hardest to be the perfect role model for the rebellious Wylla, Wynafryd would often relent in her “good older sister” image and call her silly names or stay up late giggling with her about how flustered their mother had been when she heard what Wylla had said in school that day. Ever since Wylla moved to the South, however, their relationship has been nothing less than estranged. Wynafryd would vehemently deny the truth if anyone ever confronted her with it, as she finds it much easier to just tell people it’s because of the tensioned relationship Wylla and their mother have, but she had really been hurt by the move. Their family had always been a “family first” type of people and she never thought Wylla would move so far away - especially without her. She still found herself glued to the tv or constantly refreshing the computer as the terrorist attack on the Olympic Stadium happened, finding it hard to sleep at night for fear of the phone ringing in the middle of the night with unthinkable news on the other end. While Wynafryd usually left the politics up to her parents and grandfather after the borders between Scotland and England were shut down she started listening and knew she had to put aside her hurt feelings and bring her sister home safely.

He hand flew across his chest, overtly-dramatic, as if she’d shot him in the ribs. Short and messy? He really had to stop ingratiating himself to sharp-tongued women. Being related to fewer of them would have helped too. Stepping back from the door he let Wynafryd go in, snatching her keys out of the air when she tossed them to him. He put them down on the table beside the door and followed her into the living space. 

“I’ve been here the last three years,” he said, moving past her towards the opening into the kitchen and rooting around in the washing up for a pair of clean glasses. “I was over in Willowbrae when I moved back up from London but taking the tram every day was a bloody nightmare. Drink? I’ve got beer and wine. It’s Wylla who’s the consummate soda drinker, not you, right?” The question was rhetorical. You could line up both his Manderly cousins are make enough good assumptions based on how they looked to guess most of their characters. Wynafryd was sensible where Wylla was flighty and impulsive. Wynafryd never dipped even into her overdraft, while Wylla seemed to live from it exclusively. He grabbed both options from the fridge and went back in with the glasses pinched between his left-handed fingers. 

“In your lunch break? Is RBS just letting you take off hours in the middle of the day? I’m beginning to see why my parents wanted me to follow them into banking now.”

Wynafryd watched as Daryn walked past her and pushed the sleeves on the sweater she was wearing over her elbows. She took the small window of opportunity she had while he was busy talking and looking for glasses to walk around and look at the different things he had laying around. She wasn't looking for anything in particular, she was just curious about her cousin. What he'd been up to in London and who he'd met, what he'd seen on his travels, pictures, those sort of things. She had always loved hearing about what other people were doing. In some strange way it made her feel better. Somewhat half-heartedly she nodded as he mentioned where he was living before and picked up and flipped through a book, not completely paying attention to him as she was more focused on the scribbles he had obviously wrote. Until Wylla's name reached her ears, of course.

Immediately she narrowed her eyes and shot him a look. She and Wylla were as different as night and day and it was hard to get the two mixed up. Usually she would have been particularly offended but today she didn't really see the point. Not when she was so tired, and especially not with Daryn. He couldn't have meant it even if he tried. Setting down the notebook she walked over to the couch with practically a skip in her step and sat down on the couch, a lot more excited now that he was bringing alcohol in to the picture. Coughing out a small laugh and nodding in agreement she reached out and took the glass from him, "You really shouId've. It pays well enough and I get about an hour lunch break on good days. A lot of the times though I spend most of that time catching up on things or sorting out other peoples clients so.. that hour usually becomes fifteen or twenty minutes."

She gently turned the glass around a few times in her hands. "Three years, though. Wow." Her cousin had definitely settled down as he got older. One place, one job. Not always skipping around from place to place and barely getting by while he searched for the next thing to do. Something new. Wynafryd sometimes thought about what his life must've been like then. Did he miss it? Probably not. If there was anything Daryn loved more than writing it was probably Scotland. And from his emails he was writing pretty important things for the country now. "So what were you doing that was so important yesterday? You said you would tell me if I was nice and I brought lots and lots of candy to fry so that's filled all my nice quota for the day. Or does 'nice' translate to 'drunk' because we can do that too."

By nature, he seemed to attract clutter. It wasn’t like Daryn was particularly messy or anything - the writing occupation and the cost of printing paper alone should have kept his belongings lean and contained, but he had a hard time parting with things once they found their ways into his possession. The nature of the profession meant he got compensations, gifts, tokens from interviewees, prizes here and there, more and more settled on trivial objects - paintings and books - than cash dispensation. After the paper went to print on Friday afternoon, he went home and tried to amass it all into something that looked orderly. 

The Manderlys were his only extended family. The Hornwood tree had shrunk and decayed since the second World War, as if it had taken the fact that all his grandfather’s brothers, uncles and nephews had died in that conflict entirely to heart, only letting one child squeak out at a time. Daryn’s mother was Wyman Manderly’s niece, which technically made him Wynafryd and Wylla’s second cousin, but there were so few of them that an extra generational gap did not discount for closeness. There had been family holidays together when they were younger. Once, his parents had even taken him down to Berwick-on-Tweed for Christmas with his mother’s cousin. 

It wasn’t lost on Daryn that he was the only male child of his generation, but that seemed to mean nothing, considering. Wynafryd was one of the most capable people he’d ever met. Her grandfather loved her, and she probably stood to inherit almost everything on the basis of good behaviour alone. The rest would invariably go to her younger sister, who seemed to win it on the illusion, he thought, of charm. He’d given up the ghost on that route of legitimacy and fortune long ago, so now he really only wanted to impress his cousin, keep himself in her good books. Not pull her hair and call her names like he had when he was twelve and she was six. In these days of a new nation, family meant everything. After interviewing Robb Stark, he had a clearer view of that than anything else.

The knock on the door came around four in the afternoon when he’d just finished vacuuming. Wynafryd looked just the same as he remembered, well-put together, hair half-curled, oversized Le Pliage over one shoulder, spotless low heels. She’d shot taller than him by the time she was seventeen and never let him hear the end of it.

“Wynnie,” he grinned. “You managed not to drive off the coastline!” He pulled her into a hug and then recoiled. “Where are my bloody Mars bars?”

The nervous knot in her stomach quickly detangled the moment she saw Daryn's smile. It was as if no time had passed at all between the two and was immediately pulled into a hug she gladly welcomed. When they were younger she loved being with her older cousin, he was like the brother she always wanted and never had. Even when he was being mean to her and calling her names she would just run and tearfully tell her mother, who told Aunt Donella, who would then make Daryn apologize and play nicely. As they got older and the visits from Daryn and her family became less and less it turned into holiday and special occasion phone calls and emails and letters instead.

She was about to say something smart and witty about his coastline comment when instead he brought up the candy after getting the formalities out of the way. She didn't know why she was surprised, but she was. Daryn had probably been waiting to ask all day. "Really? That's the first thing you say?" She jokingly rolled her eyes and pulled her car keys from her jacket, dangling them in front of him. "You can go down now and sort through everything since I bought a lot more than just Mars bars or you can wait until I'm all unpacked and ready to pig out with you like a gentleman. Your choice."

Taking a step back she peered over his shoulder and noticed the vacuum, smiling to herself as she looked back at him, "So now I can tell everyone back home you're still as short and as messy as ever," Wynafryd nodded and smiled playfully, "Got it." She threw the car keys up into the air for Daryn to catch and slipped past him into the flat. Being her usual nosy self she stepped into the front room and set her bag down on the coffee table as she looked around.

The place actually wasn't that dirty for a bachelor, It was nice and looked affordable enough but she was a little curious as to where the other bedroom was. It didn't seem big enough to have two bedrooms and for a second Wynafryd was worried if she asked Daryn would say something stupid like 'Well actually the second bedroom is the couch' (because it just seemed like something he would do to be mean) but she pushed the thought out of her mind and instead turned turned to look at him. They would cross that bridge when they got to it.

"This really is a nice place, Daryn. How long have you had it now? You should've told me a long time ago I could've been visiting with you on my lunch breaks or something."

The hour and thirty-odd minute drive from sleepy Berwick to bustling Edinburgh was always nothing short of exciting for Wynafryd. When she was a child she loved watching the ocean go by and seeing all the little cottages that were on the way. She still did. It was refreshing to get out once in awhile and along the way found herself realizing she hadn't been away in so long.

Of course she made the drive to Edinburgh for work, but there's a distinctly different vibe you carry with you when you're going somewhere for pleasure rather than business. Usually her car was neat and clean with a few papers from work in the back and her briefcase with the most important papers in the passenger seat, but now it was a mess of shopping bags (if there were five bags in her car, and she wasn't even sure if that was an accurate number, at least two of them were filled with Mars Bars and other assorted candy) and the overnight bag she'd stuffed with clothes as soon as she read Daryn was offering her his guest bedroom for the weekend.

Wynafryd set down the piece of candy she had been munching on after she reached the Edinburgh city limits and picked up the piece of paper containing Daryn's address in her scribbled handwriting. Maneuvering through local roads was quite possibly her least favorite thing about driving. Everyone was too slow and never knew what they were doing. Once she turned on to his street Wynafryd drove slowly, taking quick looks around for the right building number. After she found it she stopped in the middle of the road and looked up at the building, then back at the address written down. This happened three more times, as she wasn't quite sure if she had the right building even after seeing the numbers and street were, in fact, correct.

"God, this is nice." She mumbled to herself as she pushed opened the door and walked out of the car, stretched her back and moved around the car to open the back so she could get her bag. If Daryn wanted the candy now he would just have to wait or come down and get it himself. Picking her bag up she moved it closer to her so she could unzip it. Wynafryd pushed aside a few shirts before pulling out a nice pair of heels she had packed so she wouldn't have to see him in the pajama boots she had worn to drive in. Of course Daryn probably wouldn't even notice her shoes and it probably didn't matter either way to him, but she hadn't seen him in so long she didn't want to look like some bumpkin that didn't know how to properly match shoes to the clothes she was wearing.

After the quick change Wynafryd grabbed the bag, set the boots down in the bag's place and shut the trunk. As she walked up to the building her phone went off, alerting her to a new text from her mother. For a few moments she stood and stared at her phone, hovering over the screen.

No. She wouldn't bother with that this weekend. She was going to see her cousin and not worry about anything else. As she knocked on his door she suddenly felt strangely nervous standing there and hitched the bag over her shoulder, holding the straps tighter as the nervousness became more prominent.

Maybe you could write a story about a certain young Greyjoy selling young girls to creepy aristocrats in exchange for tickets to Scotland.

Sorry about the girlfriend joke by the way. I should know by now you're married to the job and all that fun stuff. At least I'll be up there to make it better soon!

Berwick's just fine, though. We're still acting as if nothing's different. Although I have noticed a few people taking bets in town as to how soon fleets will be coming in to help the troops with the border. I would ask how you're doing but it sounds like you're just fine! Look at you, all grown up and having your own adventures. I remember a few years ago when my father was going on and on about how well you were doing in school and how you were going to Aberdeen and suddenly you were living in Skye writing a book. He was a little disappointed, I must say. You're like the son he never had I think.

I've taken a few days off work to sit and think about things which has actually turned into an ongoing session of being yelled at and listening to everyone yell at each other so I'd love to come up for the weekend as long as I'm not troubling you. No girl that I might upset? (I'm just asking to be nice since you've already typed and sent the offer. I'm packing my things as soon I hit send.)

Really though, if it's too much trouble just tell me and I'll only come up for the day. It'd be worth the drive to see you and get away for a few hours, trust me.

[And she’s off. Wylla feels tears prick in her throat before they make it to her eyes. Her sister runs the gambit of concern via barrage.]

[-want to come home,’ she starts to say, but Wynafryd talks over her, as per usual. Wylla pinches at her socked feet, sitting cross-legged at the end of her hotel bed and feeling quite sorry for herself. So her father was a mess and her mother was shut down… she’d been trying to call them every morning and always left a message to say she was alright, but that was really only out of a lack of having nothing else to do than being a good daughter. That had always been Wynnie’s job. 

Then her sister picks up on Edric.]

No! I haven’t! [She justifies the lie to herself because she hasn’t slept with him since she got back and that’s really the only time bracket Wynafryd is talking about at the moment.] He’s not a drug dealer! He’s just a guy, okay? Don’t judge me, Wynnie! It’s not like I’d be up to much different if I were back at home.

[She rolls her eyes, sighing, and holds the phone away from her as she does so. Why was she always so difficult to deal with? Pressing the phone back to her ear she catches Wylla's last comments about the mysterious 'friend' and suddenly feels like a complete stick in the mud.]

I wasn't judging you I was just... commenting on it. [She wasn't always 'the good sister' after all and knew what it was like to have a new friend. Sure, Wylla was old enough and could make her own decisions, but still. Wynafryd was her older sister after all, and still felt it was her job to protect her.] And just so you know if he's put you up in a suite he's definitely a drug dealer and definitely expects something in return. Men our age just don't have that kind of money and throw it out for girls they've just met without a reason, baby sis.

[But then she heard what Wylla said next and almost choked on her anger.] What? Yes, you would! You'd be home, Wylla! You'd be around people that love you and care for you and you wouldn't be alone! [She takes a deep breath and pauses for a moment, trying her best to calm herself down.]

I can hear it in your voice, Wylla. You're alone, aren't you? [She's been sitting practically perched up on her crossed legs since Wylla answered the phone and suddenly she starts to feel it, taking a quick moment to move her legs out from under her as she moves to sit on the edge of the couch.] Why did you let Theon have your ticket? He's not... [She wants to say 'from the North.' Her grandfather's words, not hers. But it still rang true.] You know he hasn't even said anything to us? I mean, what kind of person steals a little girls ticket home and doesn't even say anything to the family? When I see him, which will be soon I assure you, I'll be sure to say 'You're Welcome,' as well as a few other things he so obviously needs to hear.

It’s the first time her phone’s shown the name since she took off on a bus bound for the city after she heard her grandfather make the call to bring Robb home. Wylla eyes it, warily, deliberating for a long time whether or not it’s worth the trouble. 

Her sister and she were not always at odds, but more times than not their mother had liked to position them at loggerheads and they were not compatible enough to disengage. Wynafryd was everything Wylla strove not to be. Graceful, trusting, disparaging… she’d even sold out after university and gone to handle money for other rich people as if nothing else had ever interested to her. 

But she was alone that morning and feeling lonely, still. She didn’t want it to have been a mistake letting Theon go but it was gradually starting to feel more and more like she’d made a grievous error of judgment. Edric still said nothing. But Wynafryd would talk. And shout. And cry, probably. But it’d be something. A little piece of home to keep her going.

She does her best to make her voice sound withering when she speaks.]

Yes, Wynnie, I’m fine. I’m with a friend. He’s got well nice digs - you’d approve. I’ve been put up in a suite!

[She scoffs and rolls her eyes, of course Wylla would act like this was the most normal conversation to have. It wasn't like she was ten times more likely to be arrested because of her stupid activist stuff or anything. It was only the beginning of what everyone was saying was war. No big deal.]

Wylla this isn't funny! Why are you acting like this isn't a big deal?! Do you realize what you've done? What everyone's going through now because you just decided that you didn't want to come home? Which, by the way, I don't know if you've realized by now, was the stupidest thing you've ever done! Da's been absolutely a mess since he found out and Ma's not talking to anyone! [She's careful not to mention their grandfather though. As much as she wants to yell at her about how upset he is she knows how close the two of them are to him. By now he's already called and yelled at her. Yelled and hurt her more than she ever could and she'd rather not reopen any wound he may have caused.]

You're so self- wait? [She's been so wrapped up in actually hearing her sisters voice and the reality of the moment that she hadn't realized what Wylla said until now] A boy? You're staying with a boy? Who is he? Have you even known him that long? What if he's a drug dealer or something? Oh, ew, Wylla. You've slept with him, haven't you? You're so gross!
