Friends and tag-mates, I have something sad to tell you that I also had to tell someone close to me today when they accidentally reblogged one of these memes. I know the memes and posts about noticing patterns, etc. seem innocuous and relevant to our experience as witches (who do spend a lot of time noticing and reading patterns).

Unfortunately the "Noticer" / the "Noticing" memes (sometimes images, sometimes just posts containing vague phrases like "noticing things", "noticing patterns", "just noticing", etc.) originate as a far-right dogwhistle referring to antisemitic conspiracy theories. It is used to signal those antisemitic beliefs and alignments while also maintaining plausible deniability. I know a lot of you may not know this. But I have seen this meme in various forms floating around the witchcraft community and I feel like someone should tell you that that's the impression you're giving to Jewish members of the community.

To be clear, I don't fault anyone for not knowing. I learned about this one months ago. My wife didn't know until this morning when she accidentally reblogged one of them and I had to bring it to her attention. But now you know.

I can't believe this needs said, but spirituality is not a competition. you should not be throwing around years of experience in an attempt to pull rank on another practitioner. truly experienced practitioners are seen without the need to boast

July- August Projects and Future Posts

 For those unaware, I will be tabling at a ZINE convention in September and have been wanting in general to start doing bigger projects again.

Over the next couple of months, I will be primarily posting updates to these different projects, which will include; witchcraft related ZINE‘S; a mini tabletop system and several comics and prints that I will also be trying to sell eventually. (Hopefully)

Most of my work will still be correlated to Heathenry and folk magic, especially Trolldom as I’m beginning my work in that path.

I’m excited to share with you all what is next!!!

Thinking more on animism, realistically, I am an animist. But I hesitated to call myself one with seeing so many animists who treat energy/souls and the like of animals, plants, spirits, objects, etc the same way they treat humans. To me that just isn't accurate, and is even repressive to one's spiritual knowledge and capabilities. Maybe this is a common thing, maybe I've just been seeing a lot of this oddly specific sliver of animistic belief.

Cause I mean, yes, treat everything living and non-living with kindness and respect (unless you need to defend your peace from someone/something that threatens it), but attaching a human likeness isn't necessary. To me that's taking a step backwards in showing respect and forming connection because you're not only assigning human assumptions, unspoken rules/customs, expectations, etc onto something that isn't human, but you're expecting to recieve all those same human behaviors back. That's what I personalty don't like.

I think the biggest contributor to this is our ego as a species and society, this unconcious belief in many people that humans are "above" other beings. So to some animists treating something without human standards equates to treating them as lesser, which is just not true. I don't believe much of anyone/anything is "lesser" or "better" than anything else. Just different. And it's really beautiful and enlightening getting to learn how to commune/connect with another energy or spirit that adheres to a different convention. Yes it can be difficult, takes some studying, and requires practice/patience. But it is all so rewarding!

To whoever needs to hear this...

You do not need visualization skills to do energy work, perform magick, be a witch, or anything in between.

Rituals, spirit work, spells, divination, and so on have been practiced through so many other means than just visualization since practically the dawn of humanity. There are four other mundane and psychic senses than just eyesight and clairvoyance that you can utilize.

Raise and direct your energy via movement, your breath, and music. Meditate through automatic writing/drawing, or focus on how energy feels in different locations. Hone your intuition by asking for and noticing observable signs or listening to the voices of spirits and discerning them from your own inner voice.

Visualization is just one of many tools you can potentially use. Not have to.

I saw the tag about worshipping the Mississippi and I got excited, so a little bit of niche local lore for me:

In Ocean Springs, Mississippi, there's a Walter Anderson art museum featuring a recreation of a carving called "Father Mississippi." The first time I saw that was when animism really clicked for me as a concept.

Like, wow, from Michigan to Mississippi we are all connected. Every corner of the world knows the others in some way. Absolutely beautiful. And the Mississippi River itself sustains SO MUCH land, so many species. Environmentally speaking, nothing makes more sense to worship than our water systems.

So yeah, great museum. Worship the land, the river, and all her tributaries.

Indigenous peoples of the US have been doin' it. We still be doin' it. Features of my ancestral lands in the North and Southeastern woodlands are their own living things. If you're curious about it, look into who's land that is, reach out to see how you can honor those things while not stepping into closed cultures (assuming you're non-native) and accept the responses.

A good way to honor the rivers, mountains and lands is to be aware of people who have traditional stewardship of these areas and how to get involved in preservation efforts.
