”M’hopin’ maybe she gets an idea once she ‘ears it, otherwise, I’ve just written a hit for nothin’.” He answers, cheekily, before turning his head to dot her lips with his own. Her words are confirmation enough that she likes it— but he needs to hear her gush. Attention and praise is something the musician strives on.
“Y’like it, then?”
‘ love it. i might be hummin' it all night, actually. ’
the song itself goes further than a little touch, or a short kiss can reach. ‘ y'know i love your music, sweetheart, always love your stuff.... love them especially when they're about me, but,’ she pauses, tossing him a saucy smile in the short space between them, her eyes seeking out his. ‘ reckon i'm biased.
Jane, You're stupid, and I hope Paul realizes it before it's too late. You're frigid and fake just like any other inflated, self-important actress is. Go find someone as fake as you and leave our sweet Paul alone. In case you're not aware, you've got a target on your head. I hate you so much-- more than I've ever hated another person before, and I hope you die. Then someone /else/ could have a chance with Paul. Someone who is worthy of him. --- Jenny
Dear Ms. Jenny,
Your spiteful correspondence should make me rather upset. But instead, as you would expect, I cannot feel anything in my cold, dead heart, and definitely, given the ability, wouldn't waste it on you.
I'll enjoy my numbered days upon my ensnared lover's lap, and know, that if I could weep, I would knowing that a young girl such as yourself finds it in her heart to hate me so very deeply.
I've asked your aforementioned poor, sweet Paul, who's found your letter as captivating and eloquent as I have, to spritz his cologne on this reply. He wishes me to let you know it's just to hold you off until the pair of you may meet, on the event of my passing.
You'll be ecstatic to know how much this displeases me, but I doubt it should matter much longer, as you have dutifully pointed out, I have a target on my head.
Yours, most ardently,
J. Asher
'Bright are the stars that shine dark is the sky I know this love of mine will never die and I love her.’
the last words come followed by three notes, and an off, but at the same time, soothing triad. as per usual for musicians who are proud of their work, paul lets the chord hang in the air between them for a moment before his hands settle over the strings, and with an air of curiosity, he looks up at her.
”Dunno if you can tell but I ‘ad someone in mind when I wrote it.”
All the affection she can muster rises up inside of her chest, as she rests her palm, and then her chin on her little songbird's shoulder. A wry smirk touches her rose-colored lips, as her arm slides between the guitar, and Paul's stomach, moving to cup his side.
‘ That's one lucky bird, Paul. Wonder if she knows how good she's got it. ’
How did you feel the first time you heard "You Won't See Me"? Did you know it was about you?
‘ i knew. and---- i felt the remorse you feel when y'know you've done something wrong. i knew, at the time, how deeply i was cutting him but it tore me up, too, you know. it's not easy to shut out someone like paul. especially if it's only to make a point. ’
he holds up his finger, a wait a moment signal, and then trudges up the stairs to his room in the attic. when he comes back down, he’s got his guitar tight around the neck. as he sits, he settles the wood work on his lap the wrong way around, and smiles almost proudly. "I’ve been workin’ on one, it just so ‘appens." and his fingers settle over the frets. there’s the customary opening few chords, and then, he begins to sing.
'I give her all my love that’s all I do and if you saw my love you’d love her too I love her—’
there's a smile that hints at he corners of her mouth as he strums, dulcet tones leaking from his lips, and filling the room around them. there's a warmth spreading inside of her, rising soft color in her cheeks. in her heart, she's got that familiar swell and squeeze of pride. she stays quiet close beside him, listening. doesn't want to miss a beat.
"I'm not gonna take it back."
‘ you take it back, right now. you can’t say those things t’me, y’have to take it back. ’
the musician only smiled— but his boyish charm was absent from the curve of his lips when it came. the smile there now was cold and uncaring, just before a scoff of the same manner came from him. "Can’t be arsed t’continue th’conversation, really," he answers, and it almost sounds teasing. "S’not worth it.”
her blood absolutely boils at his cloying tone. and with just sight of the smug curl of his lips, she finds her cheeks burning. narrowed eyes smart in anger and frustration, and it's all she can do to keep her voice level.
‘ know what? you can shove it straight up your arse. find me when you stop acting like such a bastard. ’
& she turns on her heel, head held high, never one to let someone get the best of her, and out the door she goes.
How would you feel if you found out that John and Paul had a thing behind your back?
She'd feel betrayed. Used. Daft, and thick, and pissed off. But mostly---
‘ Jealous. I'd be a jealous fool. I've always been a little envious of John, you know. He and Paul have shared so much, they're so close. But I hardly think I've got anything to worry about. They both love women too bloody much, anyone'll tell you. Gets them into an awful lot of trouble. ’
"M’not shy—— Whaddaya wanna ‘ear?"
‘ dunno. something sweet. a love song, maybe. ’
”You what?”
‘ c'mon, sing somethin' for me. don't be shy. ’
"I'm not gonna take it back."
‘ you take it back, right now. you can’t say those things t’me, y’have to take it back. ’
the comment looks as though it burns him for just a second before he pulls down that indifferent mask of his. his hands reach for something off the counter, bills or fan-letters, he’s not sure. but they’re suddenly a lot more interesting than the conversation he’s having. the conversation he’s done with.
”For someone who’s leavin’, y’sure aren’t movin’.”
there's a spasm of anger that burns in her stomach at the vacant, nonchalant expression he dons. she inhales deeply, her hands clenching at her sides, her teeth grinding just a hair, all in an attempt not to scream.
‘ sorry, sweetheart, have i hurt your feeling's? just thought you could take it, seeing how you're keen to dish it out. ’
"I'm not gonna take it back."
‘ you take it back, right now. you can’t say those things t’me, y’have to take it back. ’
"Go ahead, go! I might actually get some fuckin’ work done.”
‘ oh, don't blame me because you can't think of anything sweet to write for your thirteen year olds, paul, s'not my fault. ’
