"Yeah, but … you don’t think that he was only with me because of something to do with his house, right?” A slew of insecurities came crashing down on her unexpectedly, like waves crashing into shore. It wasn’t as if she should have minded at all, but she did. She did in a manner which caused a twist in her stomach, sickness to think, dramatically so, that what if everything she’d had, everything she’d stayed behind in Romania for … what if it was ALL a farce. Granted, she’d been the one to walk out on him, it hit her like a freight train – unexpected. In the wake of everything she seemed to now be involved with, she couldn’t imagine why she’d be dragged for more sinister reasons.
And naturally, there was such similar case with the other asked of. “I mean, I know of a few people actually.” she admitted, though speaking of one in particular. “Did you know that Matty was involved with all of this?? I probably … shouldn’t be telling you this, but … I knew about this stuff – before you brought it up. Not in any sort of detail, but … he told me about the houses, that they exist. I can’t help but wonder, not just about him, but any of them … what they do when they’re involved. I STAYED here for Daniel. I stayed here and he turned out to be something entirely different than I thought he was. What if the others are too? I can’t help but wonder what if there’s a side of Matty that I don’t know about? Like, what happens when I see something I’m not supposed to see … where any of these people are concerned.”
“Are you asking me if he eventually wanted to kill you?”
The girl paused, thinking. Then shook her head. “I mean easiest way to get caught is to kill someone you know, so I don’t think so.” It wasn’t that she knew much how Death operated, but from what she could tell, they didn’t get close to their potential victims. Meaning, anyone. With Matty’s name she felt her nose scrunch up in slight distaste. Lydia knew he wasn’t a bad person—and knew he cared about Ruby lots, but there was just that something about him that made her want to hit him in the head whenever his name popped up.
“...Yeaaah,” she dragged out, reluctant to say just how much she knew in general, about anyone. “Well, I can reach records of arrest and all that stuff kinda easily, and I did so I can tell you that there’s nothing HUGE on Matty, save for like, a few dozen fights and similar things, and —well, the BIGGEST issue might be—” she cleared her throat, trying to be as dramatic yet serious as possible, “Well, prostitution. But if you’re like, okay with that, I don’t think there’s anything else you should be worried about, concerning him.”
