BACKSTORY;

Penelope “Elle” Cynthia Lewis was born to an abc television executive and his former supermodel wife, John and Barbara Louis, in 1974 in New York City, New York

Elle has been considered extremely beautiful even as a baby/young child and was featured in many television and print ads as well as tv shows and photoshoots since she was a baby alongside her mother and father.

The family was considered New York royalty and was constantly in and out of the tabloids for their glamorous, jet-setting life styles

Elle practically grew up on television and photoshoot sets and never went to public school, always being looked after by tutors, nannies, and her doting parents.

When Elle was 8 years old her parents were killed in a boating accident and their multi-million entire fortune was left to her.

As part of the ensuing legal battles surrounding the custody of Elle and who would be the custodian of her millions a number of tests were preformed on her, including one that revealed she was a mutant.

This became front-page news and within a matter of days the Essex Institute, along with both sets of Elle’s grandparents, an uncle, and a mysterious group that in court papers would be solely known as ‘The Foundation for The Protection of Special Children’ all sued for custody of Elle with the legal battle taking sixteen months. 

During this time philanthropist and former friend of John Louis Professor Charles Xavier kindly offered to act as Elle’s foster guardian. During those first sixteen months at the Xavier Institute Elle learned what the institute’s true function was and became extremely close with the staff and students, although many were not fans of her princess-like attitude.

Eventually, through backroom dealings that will never fully see the light of day and more than a few planted stories in the papers ‘The Foundation for The Protection of Special Children’ gained custody of Elle, with weekend and holiday visitation to her extended family. It is revealed to Elle privately that the Foundation was a shell company created by the Xavier institute to gain custody of her. 

Professor Xavier feeling compelled to do this because of his friendship with John Louis who in turn had donated millions of dollars to mutant causes anonymously, because his wife Barbara was secretly a mutant with the power to make people perceive her as stunningly beautiful. 

Elle’s powers would not manifest until she was thirteen, meaning she spent over three years at the school often feeling like an outcast because of her lack of abilities. During this time she began her training as an x-man from various Xavier’s institute staff, however Professor X himself stayed very hands off, only speaking to Elle occasionally.

The one thing Elle was allowed to continue from her previous life was her love of dance, she participated in ballet, jazz, and gymnastics and it became both her refuge and her passion, the staff and older students taking turns using various cars to take Elle to her classes.

At thirteen Elle’s powers manifested during a typical training session, opening a portal into the school’s grounds. The next year was spent vigorously testing the limits of Elle’s abilities, which, while considered impressive did not particularly excite the Professor as they found out she could only portal to places she had been before or could picture very clearly in her mind and could not access previous dimensions as originally hoped. 

At fifteen, feeling bored with the institute and confident in her powers, Elle would often use her portals to escape into New York City, often for days at a time, and started dating a fellow mutant and model.

At sixteen, much to the Professor and the staff’s protest Elle moved out of the institute and in with her boyfriend, who got her signed with his modeling agency. It soon became clear one of the requirements of working with the modeling agency was also working as a high tier escort and stripper, which Elle did willingly.

After two years with her boyfriend he and Elle split up and Elle took an audition at Club Nyx, no longer having to lie about her age. She got a job as an exotic dancer/stripper on both the VIP and mutant levels of Club Nyx, even incorporating her portals into her show for the mutant level. 

Elle made an absolute killing at Club Nyx, buying an apartment at Fydelia Apartments, where she continues to work and live, also running her mutant-only high-end escort service out of her apartment.

One of her friends at Club Nyx convinced Elle to try and repair her relationship with Professor X and the institute. At 22 Elle returned part-time to Xavier’s school, even teaching a few dance classes during the summer, and acting as a reserve x-man after completing her danger room examination. Her relationship with many of the Professors and Professor X remain stilted, however she is very close with many of the students.

TL;DR Elle was born to famous parents who died suddenly, Xavier’s institute got custody of her under a false name and she lived and trained there until she ran away at 16. Since then she’s worked as an exotic dancer and escort and made a shit ton of money. Within the last two years she’s had a better relationship with the institute but it’s still a little tense

         as soon as someone stumbles upon his hiding place, fins is already stumbling to his feet. he’s half-burned and scratched in many, many more places, but he knows that he is far from a welcome sight to anyone. “i’m sorry, i was⁠—” hiding “…trying to get away. i can leave. this is a good spot, if you want to take it.”

Elle felt a sharp pang of sadness as she observed the peeling, burned flesh all over the boy’s torso.  Some people may be alarmed by the way Fins looked, but Elle had spent more than her fair share around the mutant underground, if anything he looked innocent, child-like, this was the last place a boy like him should be.

“Oh you poor dear,” Elle breathed, “Please just sit, I’m small, I promise we’ll both fit.”  She wanted to portal him to a hospital but Elle knew all that would do is put him in more danger. What he really needed was a mutant with healing powers but as far as she knew on 46th st there wasn’t a single healer on her side and Fins didn’t exactly seem like the kind of kid to run with the Brotherhood. Elle put on her most comforting, friendliest voice. “I’m Elle, I’ll do what I can to help protect you, what’s your name honey?”

Elle was desperate, she was clutching at her side and she could feel blood soaking through her suit from her shoulder. She had to find a healer and fast or she was gonna end up another body on the street.  She saw a boy standing over someone sitting on the street, he was clearly healing them and they looked brotherhood. But at this point she didn’t care. Stumbling her way forward she fell on her knees,  “Look, I know you probably hate me. I know you don’t care if I live or die so here’s my offer. I’ll give you anything you want, one way trip to anywhere in the world or as much money as you want, hell I run an escort service if that’s more your style. Whatever you want, but you have to heal me.”

Her conversation with Fins kept spinning around in Elle’s head. She was worried for him and didn’t even know how to check up on him once this was all over. She was only half on 46th st, her knife scraping past one brotherhood member’s thigh and sinking into another’s arm in defense, but she barely registered it.  Maybe Elle had more blood loss than she thought, maybe she was just shell shocked, whatever it was she had to focus. As she continued to run through the street Elle ran head first into another girl. Blinking up at her from the ground she asked, absolutely astounded, “April?”

As the massive form of a brotherhood member came charging towards Elle she opened a portal and jumped through it in the blink of an eye. She leaned on a telephone pole for a minute catching her breath, then she saw another girl wielding a knife and charging towards somebody who was healing a civilian’s broken arm. “Absolutely not!” Elle decided and before she knew it she was in front of the girl opening portals left and right to stay out of reach of the blade.

Elle opened another portal, she wanted the kid gripping her arm to go somewhere safe, but it’s not like she could send them home, wherever that was. The best she could do was somewhere public where the kid could find a proper adult. She spread her hands and through a purple haze times square was visible, crowded, but thankfully not in complete chaos. “Go find an adult with another kid and have them call the police ok honey?”  The kid nodded and stepped through the portal hesitantly. Elle felt terrible, but this wasn’t the place for a child and the police, while useless in most respects, were probably the only people who could track down whatever family the kid had that weren’t lying a pile of blood. As she tried to collect her thoughts Elle noticed bugs crawling by her feet, too many bugs, why the hell were the so many bugs. She spun around and saw Betty facing her. “Let’s do this,” she gritted her teeth.

Elle had always been taught never to expect a fight, but to always be prepared for one. On days like this, with the cool breeze and the flowers blooming she liked to walk to work, do things the old fashioned way and give her powers a break.  When the chaos broke out Elle hastily opened a portal to her apartment and threw her dance bag through it, quickly pulling out her suit and a mask. Within seconds she was suited up and dual wielding her customized pocket knives.  She landed her knife in some brotherhood member’s arm and opened a portal to get away before they could regain her bearings.  As she stepped through Elle nearly ran head first into Ina, smiling she asked, “Wanna tag team?”

LETS TALK MUTANTS

what’s your mutant’s ability? Elle creates portals as a form of spatial manipulation.

what’s your mutant’s classification level? Alpha

how old were they when they first discovered their abilities? how did it happen? Elle has known she was a mutant since she was eight because of testing done during her custody battle. However, Elle’s actual powers manifested when she was 13 and training with Wolverine. They had been sparring and she was on the floor with a claw pointed at her and a portal to the manor’s grounds opened behind her

so, what can your mutant do with their abilities? Elle can create portals anywhere on the planet as long as she can picture it clearly in her mind’s eye.

…and what can’t they do (at least, not yet)? Elle cannot create portals off world, to other dimensions, or anywhere that she either hasn’t been or can’t picture clearly. She also cannot create more than one portal or two portals that open and close in the same place.

what’s one thing they hope to learn or are currently trying to learn with their abilities? Elle really wants to see if she can portal to other dimensions. It was originally an ability that Professor X hoped she had when her portaling was first discovered. She understands that everyone’s always been a little disappointed she can only create portals on earth and she desperately wants to prove that she can do more.

what is the most powerful thing your mutant can do with their abilities? do you think they would actually do it? There have been a couple of times where has opened portals to what she thinks are other dimensions, however they have never lasted longer than a few seconds. Potentially, she could create a portal to somewhere like the middle of the ocean and push someone through it, although she’s never actually done it and has never been in a situation where she would have to make that choice so she doesn’t know if she would actually have the stomach to indirectly kill someone.

what are your mutant’s weaknesses? Elle can still be harmed like a regular person and can be forced or coerced into creating portals.

do they use their abilities in their day-to-day life? in what ways? Elle uses her powers constantly. She portals around her apartment, she portals to get things, she portals to work. As long as she’s sure no normal humans will see her Elle portals wherever she wants to go. Elle also uses her portals during her show at Club Nyx and will make ones for her friends whenever they want.

as a mutant, do they have any goals? dreams? On a personal level Elle wants to see a day where mutants aren’t regarded as exotic or  strange, especially surrounding sex. On a more global level Elle wants mutants to have equal rights to regular humans because she knows it’s basically the only way to stop mutants being sex trafficked which she’s seen all too much of.

how do they feel about the last 30+ years of mutant history? notably, the presidential address of 1983 and the essex house? Elle learned extensively about mutant history while at Xavier’s and knows that the presidents words are practically meaningless and Essex is full of shit. That being said she doesn’t super care about the intimate nuances of history and cares more about stopping the abuses of mutants with as little violence as possible.
