a.n: is it bad that i would defend liu xiao to hell and back even tho i can name at least three characters that objectively deserve to point a gun to his head? yes but i had to write this
liu xiao doesn't give a shit about pool. maybe he has a knack for it, and maybe he likes having the upper hand in the sport, but it's not as though he makes it a weekly routine to aim a cue stick against a billiards ball.
and yet, he's never been as terribly entertained by a game of pool like he is tonight.
all too mutually familiar to one another, it had been hard to miss each other upon fleetingly walking past each other â only for a brief moment and within the distraction of your respective companies, but it was simply impossible to not stop in your tracks and lock eyes.
you should've known better than to accept his invitiation for a game while wearing that on-brand smile.
halfway through, the game wasn't a game anymore. or maybe it was, but definitely not in pool and extremely much to his one-sided entertainment.
you're multiple vacant pool tables away from the people you both had initially arrived with. in the back of your mind, you can't help but wonder how visible you are to their attentions, the room solely lit up by dimmed lights hanging over each table.
on the long edge of yours, you're leaning back against it, hands clawing onto the wood hard enough for your knuckles to whiten and nails almost break.
the conversation that had diverted you away from the game had been one that should in no way reach the ears of others; exchanging matters involving individual field of works kept secret from most of those in your surroundings, clearly of importance and yet, you can hardly remember a single word of it. not in this situation.
you'd subconsciously left your cue stick across the table. liu xiao rests his palm on the tip of his own, the free palm keeping his weight up on the edge, right next to your own. he's leaning forwards, very much so, to such extent you can feel his even breath fan your skin.
"it's a shame that you don't want to negotiate. i'm sure we'd benefit equally of it," liu xiao sighs, but he hardly sounds upset by your firm rejection. you can tell, because he's still showing you that pleased smile. "i don't enjoy forcing people into business though, so i won't bother you any further about it."
"if you get that, move back already," you croak out, trying to stay as composed as possible despite being completely betrayed by your eyes refusing to meet his.
"why?"
unbelievable question, really, but nothing shocking when it comes from liu xiao.
"i believe we've already made it clear that i'm not interested in businessâ" your sorry excuse of an argument is interrupted by a quiet gasp when he leans in even closer. "a-also, this looks really weird to the rest."
"that's funny." his smile widens, and the smugness in it makes you wonder if it'd be a bad idea to hockey-check him into the closest wall. "you've never struck me as someone who cares about what others think â not that they can see anything from here anyway."
"they have no idea we already know each other and it's better like that. i don't want them to get the wrong idea."
"about what?"
"yâyou know what i mean! it's not like we're close to begin with," you hiss back at him. you can tell your confidence is slowly but surely starting to shatter though and you attempt to swerve the topic before he can push it any further, "besides, i want to finish the game already."
liu xiao briefly raises an eyebrow at this. his hand leaves the edge of the table and you just can't help but flinch when you suddenly feel his fingertips over the skin of your cheek.
coming from him, the touch could be anything from a threat to a way of entertaining himself even more. whichever it is â because you honestly can't tell this time â you're left frozen beneath it. it doesn't help when the digits ghost down your jaw and by the time the tip of his index finger rests under your chin, you can hear your heartbeat hammering in your ears.
"even though you've never cared a bit about pool?" liu xiao taunts, his finger sinking lower alongside your neck with each word he speaks. "i was actually surprised to see you here â you must really want to keep your true colors a secret from your friends, no?"
"isn't that justâ"
you cut yourself short when he slowly drags his finger across the curve of your collarbone. shoulders hunching even more, your head sinks lower, as if you care so much more about the old, shoe print-stained wooden floor than the fact that you can almost feel his forehead against your own.
it may undoubtedly be in liu xiao's nature to play with any functioning part of one's brain â god forbid you already don't know that â but at the very least, he knows what lines to not cross; the digit doesn't travel any further than right below your collarbone, showing no signs of departing from your absolutely blazing skin, but humbly staying in place.
that could be great and all, in fact you could even appreciate the thought, had it not been for the realization slowly sinking in the longer the touch lingers within that area.
it finally hits you, how your heartbeat isn't only hammering in your ears, but in his as well. your eyes widening is enough to reveal your new knowledge.
"what's wrong? i know it's way out of my ability to get you scared â you're not angry with me, are you?" your silence drags out a chuckle from him that he doesn't as much as try to hide. "or is it something else? i'd love to find out, you know?"
cat got your tongue. your thoughts, your sanity, composure, confidence, guts and everythig. that said, you're hyperaware of the half-lidded eyes behind the glasses boring into your own, tips of your noses grazing against each other and the way you can feel his lips almost, almost touch yoursâ
"y/n, are you done? we're leaving soon!"
you can only faintly hear your company calling out to you from the other side of the room, but it's just enough to get your mind together. your painfully tight grip releases the table, yet they barely have the strength to push him aside by his chest. when your shoulder bumps into his, you don't care the slightest about turning around to face him and apologize, opting to instead let your rushed feet drag you away from there. while reuniting with your friends, you do your best to ignore liu xiao far behind you.
"it was nice seeing you again," you hear him call out, and you make out that stupid smile lacing his words, "let's finish our game next time."

seeing an all too familiar face during work hours turns out to be brutal when you were something other than two professionals last time you met.

xia fei is staring intently into the camera â just like his job as a model requires â but you feel as though heâs staring at you and you feel so stupid because you were the one who had directed him to smile not even a minute ago; now that you stare back at him through the lens, youâre overthinking yourself into believing itâs a smile thatâs mocking you.

you wince the slightest bit from where youâre crouching on the floor. you know itâs a genuine question, but coming from vein right behind you, it does little to nothing to ease your nerves â firstly, itâs vein, secondly, he was the one who personally reached out to you for this particular shoot. fumbling it now that youâre here is simply not a choice you and your career can afford.
âyeah, the lens is just⌠sorry, can we take a break? just gotta fix it real quick.â
thereâs absolutely nothing wrong with your camera. itâs perfectly fine. youâre not fine. you step aside and fiddle with it, acting like thereâs something wrong â you quickly realize youâre just making a fool of yourself because you donât even know yourself what it is youâre pretending to fix.
doing a photoshoot under veinâs request is an offer many local photographers and beyond could only dream of. had you known in advance the model heâd requested to get photographed would be xia fei, you wouldâve deemed it a nightmare and declined it right away.
the lump in your stomach that youâve been trying to ignore only keeps growing. itâs stuck there like a weight, yet you feel like youâre about to throw it up at any moment coming. the ache within you is brutal, twisting your chest, running a turmoil through your blood flow, making breathing just a tad harder than it should be. agony takes the shape of tears and stings in the corner of your eyes, and you feel a wave of shame washing over you; on one side of the lens, your former lover is doing as fine as ever and on the other side of the lens, you feel like youâre going to break down upon seeing the former lover in question â one professional photographer you are.
âthe touch-up is done, y/n!â one of the nearby makeup artists calls out, kindly and blissfully clueless, âare you good to go?â
âiâll be there in a moment!â
you take a deep breath, blink the threatening tears away and turn on your heels. however, itâs in beat with another outcall of your name, one coming from the very issue himself and it catches you so off-guard, you nearly trip on the first step you take. a quick hand around your arm keeps you up, the impact from the fall muted by another hand on your waist. âs-sorry, i wasnât lookingâŚâ
you donât even try to face xia fei, opting to instead look down at the camera flush between your chest and his. his hold is respectful and polite, releasing you as soon as youâre confirmed steady, but the touch burns ruthlessly through your skin even once itâs gone. âis everything okay?â you try, although you begin to question if thatâs just you hoping someone would check up on you.
âyeah, just wanted to check if we could do some close-ups too."
as if youâd just been told the most impossible request, you quickly look up, âwhat?â
âiâve seen some of your previous shots in magazines,â xia fei states, lightly tapping a finger on the camera with that familiar and ridiculously charming smile. âi really liked the close-up ones, so i was wondering if we could do some of those.â
as an ex, you have every reason to deny his request. as a photographer? not a single one in sight. not even a âi donât think close-ups suit youâ would pass as a white lie, because he has a face sculptured to look like a greek god from any distance at all, and he knows. now what?
âyeah! of course.â

only a little while later, youâre both situated on one of the props on the set â a sofa far too small for your situation. heâs sitting cross-legged by the other end with his hand keeping his head up from the arm rest. his free arm is limply stretched towards the other side, but the palm flat on the vacant spot poses an invitation to take a seat. itâs a basic stance, but your memories are too familiar with it for you to ignore. a lazy smile, one bordering to a smirk, lifts the corner of his lips, and you hate that you have to direct him for the sake of magazine-worthy results: âtilt your head a bit to the side. your eyes arenât visible. enoughâ
xia fei easily does like told and just like that, you once again feel like heâs staring right through your soul through the lens.
âitâs nice to see you again, y/n.â
you just know that the photo you click at that exact moment is going to be pathetically blurry, the sudden, quiet statement having left you slightly startled. you do your very best to show composure in your voice though, âweâre both at work.â
the flashing from the camera stops for a brief moment as you clear your thoughts. â... thereâs nothing to talk about.â
âno one can hear us from here.â
âthatâs not the issue.â
âthen what?â
âjust wanted to let you know itâs nice to see you again,â xia fei clarifies in a whisper, the smile widening somewhat. âlast time i saw you, you were almost giving up on going pro; i'm happy you didnât.â
âin that case, let me do my job as a pro,â you retort, calmly yet in desperate hope that heâs, for the dear love of god, going to leave your sanity alone. âthis isnât the time for that.â
âthen make time later.â
you nearly choke on your own spit. without doubt, you just took another blurry photo and you quickly begin to fear that youâre going to break out in tears again.
âletâs have some coffee after this.â
the camera in your grip sinks. you stare at its screen, now focused on the hand on the empty space and in the back of your head, it reminds you of the countless times youâve held that one hand. you blink away any coming tears as well as you can but the deep, shaky breath you take betrays you enough to widen his smile even further,
you thought it'd be funny to mess with your lover just for the shits and giggles, even though you should've known better when the lover in question is none but vein himself.

a.n: purely wrote this so i could make my headcanon of vein calling his s/o 'darling' a reality.
fully dressed in his usual, stylish work attire, vein is surprised upon entering the bedroom just to see that youâre⌠anything but that.Â
the curtains are still as drawn over the window as they were when he left the room earlier this morning. strings of light pass through the fabric, faint but enough to reveal the mess of hair just barely peeking up from the top of the duvet. itâs more quiet than death ever would be, and he could almost begin to wonder whether youâve suffocated in your curled up, cramped space, had it not been for the rising and sinking of your figure with each breath you take. he has to stifle a laugh, briefly thinking about how heâs never seen someone sleep so deeply with not a single care for the world.
then again, itâs past one in the afternoon. you have to wake up at some point.
while making his way closer, vein places his signature metal fan on one of the drawers. the same hand thatâd been holding onto it settles on top of the sheets, supporting his weight as he leans over your figure. the index finger of the other crooks around the edge of the duvet, carefully pulling it down far enough to reveal your awfully peaceful face.
âisnât it time you wake up, y/n?â vein hums, rising an eyebrow when you donât as much as stir even a little. âitâs getting pretty late.â thereâs a reaction for once, though nothing more than a short-lived grimace. the next reaction, just a short while later, is an unconscious shiver when youâre exposed to a chill as he pulls the duvet down a bit more.
âdarling,â he attempts, pausing to lean closer and place a light kiss to your lips. pulling away, he doesnât miss the way they slightly pucker for a moment as if chasing after his own. this time, he canât hold back a quiet laugh despite continuing, âare you perhaps not feeling well?â

once again, no reaction. and once again, vein leans down for another kiss. âyou know i donât like funny acts like that,â he speaks, softly yet making the reminder clear, âkeep this up and youâre going to leave me with no choice.â

the current freezes for a few seconds, as if to observe whether thereâs going to be some sign of further life from you. thereâs nothing, and he realizes heâs left with no choice after all; vein dives in again, letting his lips stay locked with yours longer than before; he parts, very briefly, one of his hands finding its way below your back to hold you closer. another kiss, and another, and another.
âhow much longer are you going to pretend youâre the sleeping beauty?â
your eyes donât open but - at last - you crack the smile thatâs been threatening to reveal itself for a while now. you feel the linger of another touch to your lips and although you donât speak, you donât try to hide the way you respond to it. it drags a low laugh out from your lover.
vein leads his other hand further up, cradling the back of your head - itâs a sweet gesture, but youâre aware itâs also purposely blocking any opportunity for escape as he lands one kiss after another. each is a bit deeper than the previous, and youâre certain he unfortunately doesnât miss your light flinch upon feeling his tongue swipe across your bottom lip. it continues like that, until you eventually reach the inevitable.Â
well, vein doesnât, but you gradually begin to feel out of breath, and maybe youâre soon to be more likely to suffocate than you did earlier, cocooned under the duvet.
youâve lost count of exactly how many kisses itâs been until instinct abruptly has you slapping his chest in an attempt to give you some air.Â
âthere we go,â he laughs, equally heartedly as proudly. âwasnât that hard, was it?â
âvein, youâre ruthless!â you laugh back, not bothering fighting back when he helps you sit up. âwhat if you seriously knocked me out there!â
he responds with a much amused chime, âplease, i would never.â still standing on his feet, he reaches to hold your face in the warmth of his hands and looks down at you. although the pride and smugness doesnât leave his face, his voice falls the slightest bit softer. âyou slept a lot, dear. youâre not getting sick, right?â
deeply breathing out, you slightly nestle your face into one of his palms. ânope. iâm just sleepy.â
âoh, is my little darling feeling eepy today?â vein coos and judging by the silly tone of his voice as well as the playful grin he flashes, you know heâs thoroughly entertaining himself by messing with you. in return, you shoot him a glare, although only half-seriously.
âi donât know where you picked up eepy from, but never say that again,â you grimace and arch your head away from his hold. âget out, iâm getting changed.â he laughs once more, but opts to not disturb you any longer as he turns around on his heels. in the meantime, you kick the duvet off and stand up as well. âgosh, almost thought i'd throw up there.â
âyeah, whatever,â vein sing-songs, curling his arms up in a shrugging manner and picking back the metal fan on his way out, âtake your time, morning breath.â
