Guys I looked up "Sass-o-meter" on google images and

EVEN
IS
THIS
Gotta love CollegeHumour
So I have a couple problems with this comic in that I think it’s really sexist while trying to masquerade as being really feminist/progressive. My gut reaction right after reading it was something along the lines of the face the woman is making in the last panel, but I took a bit of time to think about it though, because it was somewhat difficult to pin down exactly what is wrong with the comic. On the surface, it looks like it’s got a pretty good message - the guy respects the woman’s wishes, and he is right about the problem with the word “slut” and the systematic issues around it. The issues I have with the comic have to do with what I felt was the wider message of it. The dudebro in the comic hits on the woman on a fairly stereotypical, borderline sexually harrassing way. She responds with a problematic statement, and then he proceeds to explain to her just how she’s wrong. The feeling I get off of this is basically that the comic is saying that there was nothing wrong with the way he approached her to begin with, and look at how Enlightened and Modern and Not-Sexist he is! The sexism is entirely the woman’s fault because she overreacted to a statement that he made because she believes in an incorrect reality. In actuality, men who approach women in such a manner are Enlightened Dudebros who Respect Boundaries and Understand The Oppressive System. And then, of course, proceed to Mansplain how women are both imagining the issues where they don’t exist and perpetuating them themselves. Such Enlightened Dudebros acknowledge that sexism exists, but would deny that they themselves are sexist in any manner, and women believing that they are are just part of the problem and end up themselves perpetuating the sexist cycle. Now, it’s not clear to me that that was what the authorial intent of this comic was. I’m unconvinced that the authorial intent matters, but possibly what the point of the comic was was to actually to say “look, even dudebros can be feminists.” If that was the case, though, I think it misses the mark, and that it stinks of the “Not All Men” sort of argument that MRA dudebros like to try to hide behind. It’s also possible that it’s actually meta-commentary on the attitude that I’m describing above, basically trying to point out how absurd self-congratulatory dudebros are, but if so, I feel like the message is quite subtle and likely lost on such dudebros who are likely to end up feeling that this is just reinforcing their opinion of themselves. (As annecdotal evidence of this, I will note that this was posted to r/MensRights).
I found the feminist.

Galloping through the mountains one day, a bright white steed came across a small rodent, as long as the day, twisting and churning by itself.
Baffled and bermused, the horse stamped on the ground. The rodent continued turning and moving over itself, over and over.
"What are you doing, small animal?" asked the equine.
The rolling and toiling stopped, and the sleak animal looked up at the horse. "I am watching what is behind me, so that I may never be surprised."
Snorting and stamping his hooves, the horse chuttered "But if you are forever looking backwards, you'll never see what comes from your front!"
Smiling up at the seemingly massive snout, the ferret spoke upward. "I don't fear the future. I look back to see where I have been, can you not do the same?"
Try as he might, twisting and writhing his head while keeping his hind quarters stable, the horse could not look perfectly behind himself. He felt slightly ashamed, but brightened up a moment later.
"I do not fear the past" he said, "only that I will stride into a future I have had no effect upon."
The two animals rolled their philisophies back and forth, when eventually a fox wandered out in between them, and sat directly in the middle of their path without saying a word.
"Do you fear what is behind you, fox? Or do you look ahead?" asked the ferret, rolling over in the dirt.
With a coy smile and a flick of his tail, the fox answered "The only fear I have of behind me is not that there is something there, but that there is nothing."
With that, the fox slunk off, leaving the ferret who only looked backward and the horse who forever stared ahead in the middle of the dusty mountain road, now made aware of their own shortcomings.
"Perhaps," said the ferret "we may be of use to one another." The horse looked side-long as the rodent explained further.
"You are tall and powerful, but are prone to surprises from the past. I, however, am forever remembering what has come and gone, and will never see what lays ahead.
Let me up on your back so that I may tell you what has come, and you can lead me forward."
The horse nodded, lowering his head to allow the ferret access as it climbed up atop his back. "This is how we shall outwhit the fox." said the ferret, gaining purchase in the steed's glossy pelt.
"Yes," said the horse, "The silly fox who fears nothing."
As they strode off into the treeline, the fox watched them from his nearby vantage point. "You misunderstood" he called behind them in a weak voice. "I do not fear nothing... I fear the nothingness."
He, too, slunk off into the distance, keeping one eye on where he was going, and the other on where he had been. "The nothingness that consumes all, in time."
Got bored and decided to honour my country. Because hey, a lot of planets have an England... right?
[Writer's Stash] Stars of Amber
"Skleg!" Though a grizzled word uttered by an even rougher voice, it travelled across the unnaturally still saloon as if it were full of shrapnel. For Amber, it may as well have been.
"I told you to lay down your cards! If you're too much of a chicken to show off your renowned bluffing skills, perhaps I should simply take my winnings and leave!" A large, scarred pair of hands slammed down upon the brew-soaked wooden table, and the coins between them rattled enticingly. On the other side of the table, a figure hidden by a hand full of splayed cards and cheap overhead lighting lifted it's head to reveal sparkling green eyes.
The tension in the air was felt as thick as water, and the small, timid company that accompanied each side of the table didn't dare cut it. Nobody stops a game at such a crucial time; there were at least sixty pieces of shimmering silver on the tabletop, up for either of the two players remaining. The other players had since dropped out, sometimes loudly cursing their luck, and other times sulking away into the darkness. Each time, the large brawny male had laughed in bad taste, and carried on. The other figure had remained silent through the whole ordeal, since the game had begun communicating his moves with simple and well-known hand gestures.
"This guy is pissing me off." Garret said under his breath, his large, powerful arms still un-moved from around the pile of coins. Slowly, the other figure leant forwards, and the room collectively inhaled. Even across the shaded saloon where business was going as usual, it seemed a world away from this betting table.
The soft sound of four card being laid out was heard, and a soft gasp from a nearby patron. "Six hearts, Five to Eight with a Jack kicker."
It was a soft voice, but what followed was anything but quiet. Tense muscles on either side had been waiting for release, giving no time for thought as Garret found this the perfect moment to release some tension. He brought his arms down the centre of the table as to not disturb the money onto the floor, and calmly discussed his views with his opponent.
"CHEATING SCUM! You can't have the Jack of hearts!"The slimy ball of bastard on the other end of this verbal abuse had given himself away and he hadn't yet even shown his full hand!
A quiet cough followed, led by a soft female voice behind the outraged loser. "A-actually, it seems he uh... does."
"No, he CAN'T have the Jack of hearts, because--" At this point Garret rummaged around in his pocket, whipping out a slightly bent card. "I have the Jack of hearts RIGHT HERE!"
A loud thud was heard, along with Garret's wooden chair creaking back as he stood up and replaced his arms around the coinage. He wasn't about to let this slime ball get away with what was rightfully HIS.
"What do you have to say, eh?"
Another gasp followed, and a worried silence ensued. The more expensive bottles were quietly removed from the bar nearby, and a few of the would-be partakers of celebratory drinks were starting to collect their coats and edge towards the exit.
"Funny, that..." Said the soft voice on the shaded side of the table as slowly, the mysterious figure leant into the lamplight, revealing a fair face with a small scar on his lower lip. Probably a bar fight that had previously gone awry, and fairly recent, too - although, it could just as easily have been from that toothpick he was chewing on in the side of his mouth.
Garret shook himself internally. Normally nothing like this would bother him in a fairly average game of poker, but something about seeing this enraging boy for the first time got to him. "What's funny about it, smartass? You're cheating, and this PROVES it!"
A soft flick fills the small space, and the world seems to slow down as an extra card was seen slowly descending towards the table.
"Did I say Jack kicker? I'm sorry, I'm rather new to this..." The young boy leant forwards once more and stood, his hands creeping around Garret's and, therefore, the pile of winnings.
"I meant a PAIR of jacks."
-----------------------------------------------------
There are not a lot of people who could beat a cheater at his own game, Garret reflected as he flicked the flint on his fire maker. He lit his paper pipe, took a hard drag and exhaled softly. No, not many people at all.
He'd acted pretty well in there, though; all of the patrons were scared he'd over-react, but believed him when he said he'd gone out to wait for the winner. He smiled at the thought of such a down-to-earth audience would follow along with such a tired narritive. In reality, he wasn't upset about losing his earnings - in reality, he'd only put two dollars into the pot the entire night. The rest he had accumulated from the rest of the players.
Besides, he thought as he took another long, drawn out drag, anybody who could best him honestly DESERVED that money. It's not like he needed it that badly to begin with; his job hauling bags of feed around paid just fine for his lifestyle, and he only gambled for fun. Not like some of those degenerates.
Once more, Garret found himself staring across the street at nothing, whilst his mind's eye had a clear image of the superior card-player's face in it. Who was he? Garret certainly hadn't seen him before, and even in the bar he barely showed himself. There was just something about him...
"It's the eyes, isn't it? Woah, calm down there, champ!"
The coughing, a mixture of surprise and being at mid-drag, slowly died down. Eventually, Garret managed to compose himself and remind himself of who he was meant to be out here. Drawing up to his full six feet (and one inch), he glared at the boy.
"What in the hell do you think you're doing, squirt?" The boy, wearing a dark but decidedly clean brimmed hat looked up at him with a smirk, obviously not scared nor intimidated by the man's composure.
"Oh, keep talking like that and I just might."
Oh. No wait, what?
"You'd better get on your way before something happens to you, boy." Garret hated resorting to cliché's, but they were classic for a reason. Most of the time, they worked, and he didn't have the time nor inclination to deal with some... confusing twenty-something year old piece of nothing right now.
"And what, pray, would happen if I didn't? What if for reasons escaping my verbal capacity, I decided to stay here?"
He winked. He f*cking winked. Who WAS this boy?
"Listen, if you don't get your scrawny ass out of here, I'll--" Garret was interrupted by the softest hand he'd ever felt grasping his own. He was vaguely aware that this was a hand-shake, but his mind was mysteriously clouded at the moment.
"My name's Amber, nice to meet you too. You can drop the act, by the way..." Looking both ways almost comically, 'Amber' leaned in with his cocky grin and whispered louder than he was previously speaking. "I'm pretty sure we're alone."
Garret's tongue, for once, had failed him. All he could do was stand there with one hand at his side, the other being held somewhat firmly by the young boy in front of him. He could see a rosy edge to his vision, and as he pushed his brain to think of something threatening to say, all he could muster was, admittedly, pathetic.
"Uh... my name's Gracion, most people call me Garret."
"Nice to meet you, Gracion."
The way the name rolled so perfectly and eloquently off of his tongue made Garret's heart skip a beat. None of this showed on his face, at least he hoped it didn't, as he tugged his hand back and turned away from Amber, leaning once more upon the supporting lumber around the back of the saloon.
"Yeah, whatever." he muttered, as he tried to get his brain back to some working order. Though, he did have presence of mind to add, in a sly tone, "Enjoy your winnings."
"Oh, don't be like that," Amber replied, joyfully leaning up against the same beam at a ninety-degrees away from Garret. "You know you could have won that if you really wanted to."
Garret turned his head just enough to glance out the corner of his eye at the boy's face, which was smiling up at him again. He hurriedly turned back to his street-gazing, which was currently other-side-of-the-ally-gazing. He was watching the smoke roll from his lips as he considered his next move.
"Huh, I don't know what you mean. You cheated, and won. I don't care, either way."
"Now THAT I believe!" chimed Amber, in a tone that made Garret wish for the silence in the bar once more. "You're here for the same reason I am, and if I'm not mistaken, you found it."
Was that a giggle? Did this guy really just GIGGLE? Guys don't giggle, that was as clear and plain to Garret as the sky was blue or the ale was watered down. He wanted to walk away, he COULD walk away, but entertainment was scarce in these parts, which is why he took to gambling in the first place. He took another drag, and took his time replying.
"Yeah? And what's that, exactly?"
"It's simple, Big Guy Gracious." Amber shifted his position, and as Garret glanced, he was turned to face the same direction as the larger man, leaning with his shoulder to the wooden support. "You found me."
Garret turned and kicked up some dirt for dramatic effect. "Just what in the hell do you mean by THAT?" he said, with genuine curiosity and offence. He even threw his ash-laden stub down to the ground and stamped it out.
For the first time, Amber backed down slightly. He stood up straight, looked at Garret's clothes and spoke more softly, evidentially choosing his words carefully.
"What I mean is... well, I've not been in this town long. I've got a lot to learn, y'know? But I've been travelling with some family and recently I've had to make some money. I learned what makes people tick, yeah? And you, my friend, can't survive without a bit of... entertainment."
It's at this moment Garret realises that the cute, juvenile boy in front of him had one hand subtly on his hip, and the other playing with the toothpick in his mouth. He still hadn't looked up, but with the way he was phrasing his words, Garret knew roughly what he was insinuating.
"I... listen, I don't know what you may or may not have heard, but I'm not up for any amount of cheap whores. Go take your business elsewhere, boy, you're too young to be a salesman of flesh." Garret turned back to his gazing, and enjoyed the crumbling architecture of the opposite building.
For a little while, that's all there was - the soft breathing from the two bodies, accompanied by the ever-droll sounds spilling out from the saloon's remaining patrons. Even with the candle-light bleeding out into the night, neither men were easily seen from any position that wasn't directly across the street - they were relatively concealed, at least that's what Garret had intended when he had come here. Before this... intruder had come into his space uninvited. What right did he have to even be here?
He turned, and pointed a finger threateningly. "Okay, time for you to lea-- uh... "
The threatening went unheeded by the empty street that was presented in front of him. Amber must have slunk off, he reasoned, like the greasy weasel he appeared to be.
...Suddenly the allyway seemed somewhat uninviting and cold. Garret shrugged and stepped back inside the salloon, the images brought forth by the young, handsome man still burning brightly in his mind like hot coals.
[Writer's Stash] More Room
(This is a short, unfinished beginning of a story I have apparently typed out and forgotten about. Enjoy.)
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
"Almost ready?"
Peter braced himself against the thin wall of this alien apartment and tensed up. Through laboured breaths, he responded.
"Y-yeah, lemme just... get into position."
"Now?"
"Now!"
With a mighty push of his thin body, his legs finally moved the coffee table three extra inches across the polished floor. He grinned over at his equally as exhausted friend, who grinned back and helped support him as he returned to a standing position. He felt the soft hands of his friend wrap around his waist, and their noses brushed one another.
"N-no, Alex, we shouldn't.."
"Come on, we're in a new apartment!" his partner in apparent decorating exclaimed, raising his hands and turning as if to take in the wide space around him for the first time.
It WAS a new apartment - one Peter didn't even know he wanted yet. They'd bought it together, more out of fiscal responsibility than anything... at least, at first. It was a pretty small, one-bedroom place with a tiny kitchen, but, as Alex had insisted when they first saw it, "It's a chance of home. Of us, together properly."
"What do I have to do? Pull the moon out of the sky?" Alex exclaimed, his bright blue eyes riding his smile right into Peter's own, dark eyes. The dusty-haired boy shoved Alex playfully, half-heartedly giggling. "No, of course not..."
He didn't get it. He STILL didn't get it, and it wasn't worth explaining so repeatedly.
"I'll do it, you know." Turned away from Alex, Peter still felt his eyes on him, and then his arms; back around his waist. Following suit, a pair of soft, talented lips beside his head. Alex had to stoop slightly as to hold who he considered his partner like this, but he knew Peter adored it. "I'll pull it right from the sky, and cause tidal drifts the likes of which this planet has never seen before."
They both smiled, and Peter appreciated the attention to detail. "You'd collapse society as we know it just to have me?"
Alex shrugged. "Well, I'd stock up first - y'know, rafts and food and stuff, but I don't see why not. Give me a lever and a place to stand..."
"...and I will change the world." Peter finished. He knew the quote from heart, just as Alex did. "Speaking of levers, will you find another place for yours to... 'stand'?" Peter giggled again, this time whole-heartedly, as Alex bent over slightly and re-arranged his clothing. "Sorry," he muttered with a smile, "You affect me more than Poseidon does the sea."
"At least he doesn't -poke- people with is trident." Peter turned and pecked the tall boy on the cheek, matching his would-be partner grin for grin. "If he did, we'd tell much different stories of the old gods."
"They're not THAT old..." Alex said, frowning his playful frown and pretending to be slightly hurt. "Oh I'm sorry," replied Peter, this time being the one who holds the other around the waist. "I wasn't aware you were an ancient greek god of the oceans, but if that's the case I guess I can expect sushi for dinner?"
His frown turning to a coy grin, Alex muttered "Perhaps if your eyes were older than the stars they seek, you would get sushi any time you wished."
With such eloquent prose, Peter was momentarily stunned by a quote he hadn't heard before - though, his surprise was short-lived as he had come across a few in Alex's arsonal that he was fairly sure were freshly made up. He tried his own hand at it.
"And perhaps, my dear, if you ate the words you spoke, we'd have no need for dinner at all!"
...and promptly failed. Alex gave him a Look, one which he returned with the accompaniment of excuses. "Well, y'know what, shut your face hole and eat me."
"And what do we say to death?" "Not today."
"The fuck out my face"
"No, YOU get the scythe! Gimme that staff." "But big brooooo..."

The Bear and The River
The bear and the river. (By Drakue.tumblr.com) One day, out in the forest, a bear was muttering to himself and he came across a trickling river, barely stretching a pawpad's width. He was obviously frustrated, but he perked up when he heard the soft murmur of the river.
"What's the matter, lonely bear?" asked the river, in a soft gurgling voice. The bear was startled slightly, but responded "My pack and I disagreed on something, and they made me leave."
The river began to grow slightly, and as it did it surrounded the bear's feet. "I flow through many lands," said the river, twisting and turning around the rocks and dirt. "I am wise beyond your years. Tell me the issue, and I shall resolve it for you."
The bear stood in the wide but shallow waters of the river, the cold comforting him through his thick pelt. He spoke into the river's ripples. "We have run dry of food, and the young have become wanting. I found a large mountain whilst roaming, and there I found a white cousin of ours. They had plenty of food, and though it took myself a while to get there and back to my pack, the white bear said that we were all welcome."
"My pack said it was too dangerous, and some didn't believe there was such a kindness upon the mountain - they said I should leave before my wild ideas corrupted the minds of the young."
The river ached and gurgled for a while, twisting and turning, before eventually speaking in a deeper voice. "Your leaders were right, young bear. I have snaked across many lands, and have never seen any food on the mountains. There is nothing there, for I have not been there; no food comes from a place with no water. There are no white bears."
The bear rose to it's hind legs to keep above the deepening current and spoke. "You are a river, you cannot flow up a mountain's side. I have been where you could never go, and I have seen the white bear, I have spoken to her, and she can provide for my pack if only they had listened."
The river, growing tired of the bear's reluctance to change it's mind, began to rage. As the bear struggled to keep it's balance, the river spoke once more. "I have spanned further than you can ever track, I have covered so much of this planet, there is nowhere I cannot go. I have chosen not to flow up to the mountain's top, as I already know there is no food in that place. There is no life where there is no water, and as I have never been there, there is no life."
The bear fought against the incoming waves, clearly having trouble with the force of the tides. The river was pushing too hard against her, but it continued; "You cannot travel anywhere I cannot, as I would have seen you do just that. You have not been to the mountain, for without water you would surely have died. Lying to me is a fool's quest, bear, for I am the river, I have flowed through all, and I know all."
With that, the river finally calmed down, it's waters receding and it's tide calming. As the river thought it'self the victor, it assumed the bear had walked in shame back to it's pack after realising it's foolishness.
All that remained where the bear once stood was a large bundle of meat and fur some way down-waters, previously pinned against a rock under the raging waters of the river. Without a thought, the river washed away the bundle of fur and meat and bones.
The bear who dared to find food for his pack had died at the hands of the river's fury. Though he spoke from experience and sense, the river in his abundance of knowledge had forgotten that to know much is not the same as to know all. While there is always more to learn, you cannot fight the tide of someone else's ignorance. You can only avoid the river.
