sometimes in the midst of everything you really do find one pocket of love, and it may be for a day or it may be for an hour or it may be for a minute or half of a minute, and it is enough

one of the best feelings is being caught off guard by someone's kindness towards you, especially when you're having a bad day, and you can't stop thinking about it for the next two weeks

a year ago today was the last time i was in a classroom full of students. when the school day ended, my colleagues and i went to the outdoor bar to just hang out. as we talked about the uncertainty of whether we would be returning to school in-person on monday, we got our answers. a district-wide email had gone out and we would be finishing off the school year via distance learning. we were to go in the following monday to prep take-home packets for students to pick up. the remainder of 2019-2020 school year was freakin weird, and such an opposite experience of what distance learning is now.
i truly do miss being with students. we are to go back to in-person starting next month, but i’m scared. covid 19 does not discriminate. and being fully vaccinated doesn’t guarantee my safety. going back to in-person instruction doesn’t change much either, it’s just that students will physically occupy the same space as me. i don’t get to sit beside them, i cannot give hugs. they cannot play together, they cannot use materials around the classroom. going back to in-person instruction will only continue to normalize the lack of importance people place on educators and their work.
i’m reflecting on a whole year of not being valued in society, of being separated from students, navigating an online space with students who do not have full technology proficiency to excel the way they should, consistent lack of equity. did not mean to turn this into a mini rant, but there it is. i have a million and one more thoughts on the past 365 days, but we’ll end it here.

Keep some things sacred to yourself whether its your grooming habits, beauty secrets, love life, ambitions, finances, spiritual practice…. Don’t be afraid to have your private secrets, you do not have to be an open book.
— Richard Siken, I had a dream about you
you are the most permanent thing in your life. always. that won’t change. ever. so put you first. prioritize you. choose you. you, you, you. your needs, your wants, your dreams, your feelings, your happiness, your peace. never sacrifice any of that, and do not spend your entire life treating people who might be temporary better than you treat yourself.
— alhwrites
especially if they act like a temporary person: bare minimum, low effort, confusing, unkind, shitty, toxic.
Having a supportive partner can literally change your life.
Telling people we love them, that we see and hear them, even during life’s quieter moments, appreciating one another whether we see each other everyday or haven’t in a year, to hold the significance of someone in our hearts while they’re here and not only after they’re gone, to give the love that we want and receive the love that we need
