Midsummer Reflection (Father's Day Edition)
Well, here we are at a neat little crossroad. Today is Summer Solstice, which is a traditional time I wrap up a season's worth of 1SE snippets, and I have that to offer for you*. Today also happens to be Father's Day. Are these things related? Well, no, but mostly yes. It's apparent that a lot of the snippet-worthy moments in my life happen with and around our family. I try to balance "the kids" snippets with the quiet moments of life, but really there is little that is untouched by the presence of those dear ones in my waking hours.
At this time of reflection, it is not unusual for me (or any Dad) to feel happy, tired, proud, questioning, anticipating, and wondering... This can sometimes feel like nostalgia. The better name for it, however, is gratitude. So, if any of us fathers hesitate when someone says Happy Father's Day, please understand that inside our hearts and minds, we activate a complex cascade that is primed by emotion, wrought with determination and embraced with love. And after a seven-second delay (FCC mandated), chances are we say "Thanks!"
* actually, I have both Winter and Spring to offer today. Part of me wants to offer this as a purposeful Solstice-to-Solstice performance, or even a convoluted Yin transforms to Yang illustration, but I would be lying. I'm just not very good at staying on schedule as once I used to be. Let's not call this an excuse, let's just call it Dad-ness.
