dazai was raised by mori from a young age inside the mafia to one day join the mafia
he should have grown up more like the people he was raised alongside–Q, who is pretty much a psychopath out to get back at the world that hurt him, or chuuya, who wholeheartedly believes in the mafia and their lessons.
but instead dazai was never interested in cruelty nor did he buy into the mafia code
and while he definitely still did the things a port mafia executive was expected to remorselessly like he was taught to, that behavior never carried over outside of his work
and he was never unexpectedly malicious about his work because, again, he was never interested in it
instead when he had free time, he preferred to do things like make friends
again, this is the child raised and taught by mori, the man who is all about keeping around only people worth keeping around
and not only did dazai make friends, he became attached to them and showed them loyalty
and he kept his insatiable curiosity in people, their lives, and their potentials
and what kind of friends did dazai make? what kinds of people interested him on a personal level?
ango, who interested dazai because he refused to let human lives become a footnote in a report and insisted on honoring the dead
odasaku, who refused to kill, took care of orphans, and wanted to be a writer
chuuya, who’s as mafia as they get but is also as pure as they get all at the same time and who, in his own mind, is a hero of sorts
kouyou, who falls in love wholeheartedly and completely and would give her loved ones everything she has
and hirotsu, who is mafia through and through as well but is arguably one of the most well-balanced and least bloodthirsty mafia members
the people who dazai surrounded himself with were the best people he could find given his circumstances
those are the types of people that dazai took an interest in
and he took interest in their good natures
and he’d have died for them
also consider that throughout his mafia career dazai was disillusioned and searching for something that would move him enough to make him want to live
now please consider that odasaku saw all of this and think about his final plea to dazai
while good and evil didn’t interest him as concepts, odasaku insisted with his dying breath that dazai would do just as well, if not better, as a good guy
and at the very least odasaku was sure that the bad guys had nothing that dazai could possibly want
odasaku said he knew that for certain as dazai’s closest friend
please think about all the things that odasaku saw in dazai that lead him to that conclusion
