“Arrested?” Xing looked at Theo in shock. “Why would they do that? They know you. Know that you would never even think about harming someone.” He placed his hand on top of Theo’s in hopes of offering some comfort. Deep down he knew though; they wanted someone to blame. Theo had been used as as scapegoat, hadn’t he? “You’ve already reached something great, Theo, whether you think so or not.” He almost could’ve laughed at Theo’s words if he wasn’t so agitated. Arrested yet still so optimistic… only Theo was capable of such a thing. “I hope it’s grown… I feel like it has.” He stared at Theo for a moment before cracking a small smile. “I love you,” he sighed as he began wiping away Theo’s tears. “I love you so much, Theo.”

Calista wasn’t above listening to what people had to say, she generally was good about it, everyone had reasons for doing things, and while it hurt for her and for Theo, she wasn’t above letting him tell her why. Though the reasoning didn’t feel right, there was still an ache in her heart. Covering her face she bit her lip trying to keep the tears from falling again as she slowly sat back down next to him. Sniffling a bit she slowly dropped her hands, hers slipping into his, gently gripping it. Intertwining their fingers she gently brought his hand up to her lips, giving a soft sigh. “Whatever it was, your past, present, that does not change us now,” she murmured, looking to him she sighed. “It is alright I forgive you,” she uttered softly, letting her head fall to his shoulder, looking at the wall in front of them. “We are okay, Xing, I promise, we are okay,” she looked back to him slowly, nuzzling her face into his neck, slowly crawling into his lap, needing to be close to him. “Tell me about your friend.”

Xing let out a quiet whimper as he saw Callista cry once more, chest squeezing in agony. No more... he had to stop hurting her. She deserved more than someone who feared without taking action. And he didn't deserve someone who forgave him, even when he made mistakes beyond repair. "I love you so much," he whispered, wrapping his arms around her automatically. He brushed the tears off of Cali's face tentatively before planting a kiss on her forehead. "I won't leave anymore," he mumbled, almost to himself. "It hurts too much not to be next to you." He smiled softly as Callista crawled onto his lap and squeezed her slightly. "My friend? They're... an interesting character. Stupidly stubborn and awkward. Kind though. They've matured a lot since I've last seen them. I wouldn't stop talking about you and Theo for the entire time and they told me that I needed to stop making up imaginary friends at my age." He let out a quiet laugh as he moved to give Callista a kiss. "I guess that means you're too good to be true then."

“I was cuddling with Cali once and got up to get some tea for her. When I got back she had wrapped herself up in all my blankets once and had her face buried in the sheets. I didn’t wind up asking her what she was doing because she looked so comfortable. She’s so cute... Oh and Theo came up to me once asking if we could make a cake together. The entire process was really exhausting because I wound up taking it too seriously. At the end we just kept smudging frosting on each other’s faces. The cake looked like shit but Flynn said it tasted decent, at least.”

“Wildcard... Uh first thing that comes to mind is when Hunter kept asking me about being a vampire. Flynn looked so vaguely uncomfortable and was so apologetic but Hunter was so excited about everything that I couldn’t help but laugh. I wonder how Hunter’s doing right now actually...”

“Oh, any of the first nights I spent in America. The language was different, everyone looked different, the people acted differently, it was awful. I’d usually cry myself to sleep and try and do anything before bed to try and make myself forget how miserable I was. It sucks to just think about, honestly.”

“To be honest, most memories of my family make me feel pretty damn guilty. But my younger brother asked me one time while we were playing together if I would always be by his side. I told him yes but... obviously I haven’t kept that promise.”

“After a few months of being in the US, I had kind of grown apathetic to how unhappy I was. But I happened to pass by this one child and her mother and the kid just... stared at me like I was some kind of wild animal. The mom kept tugging her kid away and telling her not to look and it just kind of hit me in the gut. I hated feeling like there was something wrong with me, that I wasn’t supposed to be there. That moment really drove it home for me though.”

“So when I first got to America, I was kind of really miserable. Lonely and stressed, all that good stuff. But during one of my classes, some kid comes up to me and slams their stuff on the table in front of me and goes, ‘Let me sit next to you.’ Then they proceeded to ignore for the entire class. Right before I left though, they grabbed my arm and told me, ‘I’m showing you around campus,’ and then dragged me around while talking off my ear. And that’s how I met this awkward, pushy person that I call a friend.”

“Uh... alright so Ali- my friend- was sitting on the ledge to a stage once. We were in an auditorium and just chatting. I decided to get on the ledge too so I could sit down. They tried moving over to give me some space, but wound up moving too far back and falling over the edge and tumbled down the stairs. They were so bewildered by the entire thing and was laughing so hard that they started crying. It was great.”

“Oh wow... This was quite a long time ago but one time after work my friend came to check in on me. Everyone else had left so we were the only ones there. They were leaning against a chair and they fell on their ass after I said something dumb. They got annoyed at me because I was laughing too hard so they took a broom that was nearby and started hitting me with it. I was laughing so hard that I couldn’t even breath at that point.” 

💘- A memory that gets their heart pounding

“Can I even answer this one? My heart’s pretty dead. But uh... I got Snapchat? Is that what it’s called? And Theo kept sending me photos of him and cats around town, and it just makes me really happy to think about. Heart pounding stuff, I guess. Then there’s this one time I was with Callista and she was sleeping. The entire time I was just really... embarrassed? It felt like my heart was going to explode. Wonder why.” 

💖- A memory that made them feel special

“So one time I went home from school late because I had been too busy fucking around with some classmates. It was already pitch dark outside by the time I started heading back. I was worried that my parents were going to be pissed, but when I finally got back, my mom was crying and my dad looked like he was trying not to pass out from relief. My older sister was scolding me and my older brother was laughing to himself in the corner. My younger brother was crying and hugging me and then my youngest sister was punching my arm and telling me off too. I felt pretty damn special that day.”

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t. All I can do is apologize and do better in the future, I guess.”

“Yeah actually, I feel a lot better. And hopefully I will. I don’t want to be so fearful anymore. Be more accepting of what life throws at me. Stuff like that. And- uh. I don’t want to keep disappearing on people I love.”

Theo smiled just a bit, watching their hands quietly. Were they really meant to be? Was their time apart just a trial from the universe? Theo was too afraid to assume anything. He looked at Xing. “I’m…” he wanted to say he was just fine, and even better now that Xing was back, but he couldn’t. Well, he was better with Xing here, but he still wasn’t happy. He was afraid, with all the sad things going on. “I was almost framed for a crime in town, and I’m scared.” he finally said honestly. “And I missed you. God, I missed you.” finally his arms wrapped around Xing, pulling him in for a proper hug. “I thought I’d lost you forever. I was really scared. But I’m not mad, okay? I know you must have had something important to do.”

Xing’s eyes widened when Theo mentioned being framed, a spark of anger shooting through his chest. “You?” he asked incredulously. Theo would never do anything that would hurt anyone... He returned the hug immediately and held onto Theo tightly as if he was worried the other would vanish. “I missed you too, so much.” Words could never explain the amount of pain he had felt being away from Theo and Callista. He placed his head on Theo’s shoulder and murmured, almost to himself, “I hope it was worth it. I wanted to be a better person. For you and Calista. For myself.”

what were you up to? why did you come back?

“Ah... well long story short, I had a friend when I first came to America who I left because I was worried about the whole ‘them dying before me’ thing. They contacted me and I went to properly face them. The visit took a little longer than expected but I’m back now. And I was always planning on coming back. Devil’s Watch is my home, whether I like it or not.”

Do you regret leaving?

“A part of me does, yes. But I didn’t want to live forever with that regret of leaving my friend behind. I got closure while I was gone and I truly did need that. I kind of hope that I can live more freely now.”

Calista gently stroked Xing’s cheek, smiling happily, her eyes closing for a moment, feeling utterly safe, he always had the way to bring that feeling to her, it was like a blanket, warm, soft, him. “Have you not? I am sorry my love, I only wish for your happiness,” she whispered softly. Closing her eyes with the soft kiss, she hummed, sitting next to him, she slowly let her head fall to his shoulder. “It’s okay, my love,” her hand gently gripped his. “I promise– it’s okay,” she whispered. She let him tell his story, listening to him closely but as he divulged deeper into it all, she swallowed hard, feeling her hear drop just a bit. Looking down, she removed her hands from his as they started to heat up. “So– you made Theo and I worry and freak out, no phone call or nothing, for something that wasn’t an emergency?” she whispered slightly gripping her shirt a bit. “Xing, I’m very happy you found you friend again, but we had a right to know, did we not?” she questioned. “Forgive me I’m new to relationships, but we had a right,” she stood slowly from the couch.

Xing looked down at the floor, chest tightening at Cali’s words. He himself didn’t have any answers to her questions. Why didn’t he call them? Why didn’t he let them know? His heart was filled with shame; she deserved an answer yet he couldn’t give her one. At least not one that she should have heard. “I’m not sure,” he sighed instead, still refusing to look Callista in the eye. “I think a part of me was scared.” Like that was new. “I kept wondering to myself why I left them so long ago, and why I did it to you and Theo. It was like I hadn’t changed at all and I...” He trailed off and forced himself to look back up at Cali, eyebrows furrowed together. “I couldn’t help but wonder if I had contacted you two that I would have fallen back into my old fears. My past and present meeting each other... I think I was too ashamed to admit what type of person I was to you two.” He let out a bitter laugh and looked helplessly down at the floor. “I’m so, so sorry,” he whispered.

what's good boy? how it's feeling being back in the hood

“Wow... It’s really nice. Uh- being back ‘in the hood’. I missed a lot of people and I need to take the time to greet them. Not that all the murder that’s going on is nice, but I did miss home.”
