âYouâre not bothering me with this. Youâre my brother and itâs my job to help you out.â Chris placed his hand on the boyâs shoulder, hoping heâd look at him. âYou are going to be a kid, Ollie. Youâre going to not deal with a damn thing. Make friends and have fun. Youâre not the adult here.â
Oliver felt Chrisâ hand on his shoulder and looked up at him. It was strange, because this was not what he was used to. Making friends. Sure, he did that but not like long term friends because they never did stay one place for a very long time. âIâm not used to thatâ but he wanted to try for Chris sake,Â
Chris was silent for a moment, mulling over the years and schooling heâd missed out on. It wasnât fair but he knew with tutors and help, Oliver could catch up eventually. A few extra shifts and heâd be able to swing it. âDo you want to start working on stuff? Me and you? I donât mind if youâre willing.â
âI donât want you to have to bother with itâ he said. âI can do itâ Oliver was more then used to having to fix, and take care of himself so this wasnât news to him. âIIâI figure something out, and I .. I can do itâ most kids might find it crazy but he had always wanted to go to school again.
âAnd you havenât been homeschooled since?â Chris tried to keep the rage from filling up in the center of his chest. How could she do that to this kid? He deserved to be have an education.Â
Oliver had not really told Chris too much about his life before, and he liked it that way. But he also knew that his brother did deserve to know. â um âââ â no. We didnât really, have a house and I worked a bit so we could get some money,... â
âAt all? When was the last time youâd gone to school?â Oliver questioned with a kinked up brow. âI can get you enrolled..weâll figure it out.â
The blue eyed boy bit his lip, because he didnât like the topic of school. He had never been to high school as a student, only other things. âUm, well I was 8 when my.. our..â he never really knew if the say his, or their mom to that woman. âtook me outâ he admitted looking down.Â
âNeither do I but I am figuring it out,â he said honestly. Chris didnât think Oliver wasnât doing anything less than perfect. âA job you say? Where and what are you doing? School comes first,â he said gently.Â
They could work on being brothers together, since non of them had ever been one before. âAt a store down townâ Oliver had been used to working, so he often didnât have too much trouble finding something because he had a few things on paper. âum... I donât go to school..âÂ
âItâs okay, itâs things brothers do. They annoy each other,â he nudged the boy with his shoulder. âNow whatâs going on?âÂ
âI donât know much about being a brother..â Oliver said honest. He wanted to be the best brother he could be. âNothing much, Iâm just.. I got a jobâ Oliver had always been used to working, because his mother never did so they neede to get money someplace.Â
âNothing you do bothers me more than when you think youâre bothering me. Sit down.â
âIâm sorryâ Oliver said fast, not wanting to be annoying but he still got scared. He had never had a home that lasted too long, but this seemed fine right now He nodded and sat down next to his older brother on the sofa.Â
âAre you going to hide in the shadows, Ollie? I know youâre lurking.â
âSorry âââ just donât want to bother you or anything.. âÂ
âYeah I guess so. But thatâs still silly to me because life is full of challenges we donât know how to deal with. It doesnât mean you should shove a girl in a locker and lock her inside. But then again, I am the same way with some things. Life is hard.â She reasoned with a sigh, letting her cheek rest upon the palm of her hand, elbow leaning upon her knee. Malone picked up a stick and mindlessly doodled in the dirt. âTch, yeah thatâs definitely true. Thereâs a lot of trash and obscene amounts of bubble gum above me, but I also just found 20 bucks.â She said with a grin, now pocketing the cash. âOh? Are you taking pictures with it? Do you like to take pictures?â She inquired, going back to her doodling in the dirt so she could listen to his answers.Â
The blue eyed boy nodded. âNo, I donât really think that is the way to go either. I though people that did sports like that wanted to be the cool guys. Itâs nothing cool about doing something that to someoneâ wondering why on earth they had picked her as their target. She seemed like a really nice, and sweet girl to him. Not the kind he normally found when he was out and about. âReally? MaybeI should start going under there, rather then stay up hereâ he gave himself a head note that if he ever needed money under there would be the first place to look. He knew how to get money out of the normal vending machines without braking them. One of his motherâs many boyfriends had showed him when he was around eleven years old. Though Oliver didnât always like to do it, because it was stealing after all. He had done it, he would not lie about it but he did not like the idea of doing it. âNot right now.. â Oliver smiled. He had only a few spots left on the photo roll and didnât want to waist it since he didnât have more left right now. âI like it yeah!â
âChocolate chip cookies. But you see, I forgot that I was baking cookies and by the time I remembered they were all burnt.â
âI can make food, but I have never baked anything like that.. cookies and stuffâ Oliver said looking at the dark haird girl he didn't know. But being fair, he didn't really know anyone too well. Â
âSo I tried to bake a batch of cookies today to take my mind off of thingsâŚYou donât happen to know someone who likes burnt cookies, do you?â
â.. what kind of cookies did you try and make?âÂ
âYeah pretty much. Theyâre just small minded. It doesnât make much sense to me to act with such unkindness towards things that donât fit into their version of normal. People fear what they donât understand. Which is silly to me. I find excitement in not understanding things because it means I get to learn more.â She plopped herself on the dirt beneath the bleachers, looking around curiously at the things people had dropped. âThereâs some pretty interesting stuff down here.â She observed, now listening to what he had to say about soccer. âThatâs cool. Soccer seems like a fun sport. But they all seem fun to me because when I watch them the people playing look very engaged. Though thatâs just inherent to playing sports in general.â Malone now looked up from her perusing of the ground to notice the light catch something shiny in his hands. âWhatâs that youâre holding?â
âPeople are scared of things they donât know because they donât always know how to deal with itâ this being something he knew a lot about. The ânew brotherâ thing was scary, and Oliver often did feel like he wasnât sure how to be a brother; but he wanted more then anything to be a good little brother. He just didnât know how to. He had never had anyone look out for him, he had always been that person to look out for himself. âI bet there is also a lot of gross stuff tooâ he commented looking down just a little then looking back at the people playing. âWhat?â he didnât always remember that he had the camera with him. Only reason for this being, it was always with him. It wasnât much, but it was one of the few things in life that was his and only his. âOh, nothing itâs just an old cameraâ people normally had cameras on their phone today; and didnât always use the other once. Oliver had an very old Nokia phone because his mother had told him when he was seven that she needed to get a way to reach him if she had things for him to do. And since he could not afford anything new, it was an old Nokia he had gotten and it was most likely going to die soon but if it did he would have no phone.Â
