katie gives a look of both being impressed and curious, it wasn’t as if skylar wasn’t telling the truth. “ you’re certainly not wrong and i can’t argue with you there, not that i would. but you bring up a good point.“  one that ultimately left her without much to say, other than the smile written across her features. “ how i was forgetful ? but true, it’s been ages since i’ve been vintage shopping. yes, that’s always my first thought too. and you can’t have too much character right ? if so my jacket is way ahead of it’s time.“

“Pity, I love a good debate.” She chuckled. Words that were true, even if she didn’t mean them in that moment. “Don’t we all have good stories born of being forgetful? Have you really lived until you have one of those stories? Me either, which is pretty sad. Vintage shopping might take a while, but it’s all worth it once you find something you love. Exactly! Everyone will be jealous of how much character it has, all about how you spin something... Even a stain, right?”

“and then they get on that plane and who is seated next to them? karen.“ he speaks in a heavy tone at the end, as if to convey horror. “i’m pretty sure they live life in their own bubble where they’re never wrong and everyone around them is the bad guy. i’d hate to live like that.” he puts in his order soon after she finishes doing the same, and then carries on, “anyway, i’m sure karma is just aching to get back at them. things have a way of working themselves out in the end.”

“Man... They’re just not having a good hypothetical time are they? It’s tragic really.” She sighed, casting her eyes downwards in a show of pity - and to hide the smirk pulling at the side of her mouth. “The people who think they do no wrong annoy everyone, nobody’s perfect - pretending to be makes you look like an arrogant jackass. Gotta love karma right? Well... When it’s getting other people back, it’s the suckiest thing in the world when it gets you back.”

“Hey you read a lot, right?” Lena slid into the booth where the other blonde was sitting, a small smile on her face. She didn’t want to seem desperate though she might not have worked out with that intention. “Like high fantasy stuff and the really great and amazing kind of thing though I’m totally biased as a fantasy writer.”

With a couple of hours between musical rehearsal and her shift at the restaurant, she’d decided it’d be easier to stay out opposed to going home to leave again - which is how she’d how she’d found herself stopping for lunch. Glancing up when she heard someone speak, she couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped at the others words. “Owning your bias? I respect the hell out of that.” She joked, before cycling back to the first question. “Yeah, reading is one of my favourite past times, and nothing beats a good fantasy story. Give me some amazing world to go visit for a while and I’m in love. I feel sorry for people who don’t have that. Why?”

“ it’s okay, it isn’t your fault. it’s mine i should have been more careful..”  katie reassures but she appreciates it, as well as the kind word that follow suit. “ i can’t imagine, i’m like that with my things too. i don’t see why others can’t see it that way.“  it does make her feel better, and somehow reassures too that there was no harm in being upset in a favorite piece of clothing being ruined by an ugly stain. “ a few years, it comes with a good memory.. so i just don’t want to toss it away.“

“I can understand the logic people use when they don’t get attached to things. Nothing lasts forever, so why grow attached when you know it can’t last? The only problem is sentiment is hard to switch off, and it’s oh so easy to attach good memories or happiness to a physical thing. Which may have been a little too much for the conversation, but Skylar had never been the most skilled when it came to interacting with others. She either said too much or too little, never quite getting the balance. “I get it. At least now you have another story for it? It’s sorta weird but one of the things I love about vintage shopping is imagining what the clothes have already seen. So some could look and see a stain, but hey - at least it has character now? It’s seen things.”

“ i’ve tried just about anything i could think of and than some.” it wasn’t a clear response, but with katie ? it sometimes depended, but now it was because of frustration. “ maybe, patches and pins aren’t such a bad thing. i just don’t want to just throw away my favorite jacket, you know ? i should have been more careful but nothing i can do now, i guess. “

“I’m sorry.” Which was genuine, even if it probably didn’t seem that way. “I know. When I was packing to come here, I had to get rid of a few things but there were a few things I just couldn’t part with. It may seem to silly to some, but throwing away a favourite bit of clothing always sorta hurts. But at least there’s ways to keep it, and adding details to something instantly makes it cooler.” A fact said with conviction even if she didn’t necessarily believe it, but if it helped make the other feel better she saw no issue. “How long have you had it?”

Emily laughed as she ran a hand through her hair. “I totally get you. I’ve been teaching the class for a couple months now but I’ve been doing art since I was a kid. And I’m twenty three for the record so you weren’t too far off!” She knew she looked young for her age, something that often came up whenever she met knew people. At least whenever she was in her thirties, she’d still be looking fantastic. “If you want to exchange phone numbers, I can text you the address of the studio?”

“Give it a decade or two, people will be completely jealous you look young.” She quipped, glad the other hadn’t taken it as some kind of insult. Maybe once you hit 21 you stopped being insulted when people guessed you were younger than you actually were, because Skylar was never a fan of people guessing she was younger than she was. “Sure.” She smiled, breaking off to go into her bag and pull out her phone, opening it before handing it to the other to put in their details. “Is there anything I’d need to bring? If there’s one thing I hate, it’s people showing up to class unprepared.”

Emily’s smile is genuine now and far bigger than it had been moments ago. Talking about art always made her happier. It was what she loved, what she poured her heart into. It wasn’t often that she got the chance to talk about it with someone so she always took up the opportunity. “Making pieces is always cathartic, I feel so much better and less stressed. Honestly, there are times when I don’t even start with anything in mind and I just see what comes up.” Emily pushed her hair out from her face. “And yeah, the painting class is for beginners.” She reassured with a small laugh. “You’ll be fine, I promise!”

Giggling at the other’s answer, she gave a small shake of her head. “It’s funny, just seeing what happens is the antithesis of cathartic for me. I was always a ‘follow the plan’ kinda girl.” Something that had definitely not always worked in her favour. If she made a plan she stuck to it, even when she knew it was heading in a direction she didn’t like. “Oh.” She exhaled in relief, posture visibly becoming less hunched. “Then it sounds perfect! How long have you been teaching it? That sounded rude... All I meant is... Well you don’t look that old, I’d guess like... Twenty?”

“ denim, apparently stains don’t come out the way they would with normal clothes.“  katie offers a shrug, a look that shows on her features both confusion and frustration. “  i wouldn’t mind, aside from the fact that this is my favorite jacket. i don’t particularly want a new one, but i’m at a loss of ideas. “

“Have you tried vinegar? Or vinegar and baking soda if it’s more set?” She offered almost sympathetically. While it may have been nothing in the grand scheme of things, she was certain everyone could relate to being upset by something staining their favourite clothing item. “If you can’t get it out, what about covering it up? Patches or pins depending on how big the stain is, then just say it’s a new look?”

“ me neither, but i’d for sure gain a ton of weight. it’d be hard to not want to eat there and enjoy the pastries. that’s very true. “  vera couldn’t argue there, but hers just so happened to be sweets – mainly chocolate. “ i really have to get one now. i don’t really make coffee at home, but if there’s so many syrups available and flavors i just might have to. probably would be cheaper. healthier is much better than not healthy at all. i’d absolutely love that, thank you. it’s my coffee for tomorrow now for sure. i’d say the cereal latte they have, it’s so good. or the toasted mocha chocolate. of course, i don’t mind at all. it sounds fair since i asked first and all. “

“On one hand I love how many syrups are available... On the other I hate it because you end up wanting to try so many, despite knowing that much coffee is bound to have adverse affects but... Sometimes your mind tells you it’s worth it for smores flavoured coffee.” She might not let herself indulge in treats too often, but sweet flavoured things was a loophole she was more than okay with. “Cereal latte does sound... Amazing though. The simplest pleasures are the best ones, right?” Going into her bag she searched around until she found her wallet. “God, now I really feel like I need my caffeine fix.”

“ you know, i always thought people were kidding, when they would say how dirt stains ruin clothes.“  katie is shaking her head, she hadn’t believed it until she couldn’t get the stain out of her favorite jean jacket. “ it totally sucks, how true of a statement that is.“

“What sort of fabric did you stain? They all have different methods of getting it out. Apparently clothing likes to make our lives difficult and doesn’t have a one solution fits all thing.” In theory, she found it interesting that different methods worked for different materials, in practice it was a pain. “And if worst comes to worst and it can’t be fixed... At least you have an excuse to go buy a new one?”

          𝐇𝐈𝐒  𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊  𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐒  𝐓𝐎  𝐓𝐇𝐄  girl  again ,  impatient  stare  on  the  barista  finishing  his  order .  it’s  an  effort  not  to  complain  to  the  man ,  but  it’s  helped  by  the  distraction  the  young  blonde  provides .  when  he  looks  back  at  her ,  there’s  incredulity  in  his  brown  hues ,  her  question  sounding  too  stupid  to  his  ears .   ❛   isn’t  it  obvious ?  this  unnecessary  situation  was  the  staff’s  fault .  but  you  can’t  expect  much  from  someone  who  pour  coffee  for  a  living .   ❜

A small twitch of her eye was the only noticeable change in her facial expression, which she was thankful for - even if it did lead her to a crossroads. Normally she’d play along and put the workers down to avoid any sort of clash, yet she had made her New Year’s resolution to try and stop playing up the vapid, spoilt princess role she’d created for herself. “I don’t think you can place the blame entirely on the staff. You don’t think people should have a modicum of decency while in public? Regardless of service, creating that much of a scene makes you look like the worse person. People should put some thought into how they come across.” Maybe the staff could have handled it better, but bias meant she couldn’t place the blame on them, at least not entirely.

“and what if they had messed up?” brody asks, mock horror on his face, “they’re over here screaming about their name being spelled wrong, they’d probably want the hairdresser’s head if a single hair is out of place.” it’s a funny image, though he does feel bad for any employee who has ever had to deal with the person ahead of them. “wise words, but i don’t think so either.“

“Oh, they would have to get the hell out of there, rush home and grab their passport before getting the first plane out of here. Only way to save themselves if something went wrong.” Keeping her tone as serious as she could, she glanced towards the counter again - sighing in relief as the person causing the scene stormed out. “Wonder if they ever stop to realise they make their own day worse.” She mused, walking over the counter and placing her order, stepping aside to let him do the same.

    she couldn’t help but smile at the mention of her youngest .  he’d been her baby for so long  ––  a baby of two and a baby of five showed little difference  ––  but the way she cared for her kids was equal .  if he wanted to go off as skylar would ,  it just meant a lot more traveling for her .  plain and simple .  however ,  its the question that brings her back to reality .  and it was something she hadn’t truly shared with anyone .       ❛  yea ,  i did .  whenever i’d travel to new york to testify ,  i’d meet up with a few lawyers and the like to talk about cases and get updates on the kids .   ❜        it was strange  ––  letting all of this out in the open .      ❛   but i’ve also been seeing a therapist since i moved to colorado .  one approved by the system who i was able to talk to .   ❜

Face scrunching up at the mention of lawyers, she had a hard time picturing that was a welcoming room. Lawyers weren’t paid to hear someone vent about their feelings after all, though the look softened at the mention of a therapist. “Couldn’t they have put you near someone else in the same situation? Therapists might be a good way to talk through how you’re feeling, but it’s not as though they’d know how it really feels. It seems... You had to have felt lonely being the only one you knew going through it.” Loneliness was something she understood, but it wasn’t on the same level. Her’s had also been self imposed - first by being too shy for her own good and then by being too terrified to let people see who she was that she never let anyone too close. Her mother on the other hand had no choice in her situation, and that made it so much crueller. “What about now? I know people know now, and you should have people you can talk to but - emotions are weird and I doubt anyone is totally chill with everything or gets it. Sorta seems like you’d still need someone to vent too.”

“i know your mother quite well.” though she doesn’t exactly know how much ariana has told her youngest children in regards to the past. she knows they know about the sinclairs now, but the rest of it is still a mystery to genevieve. as intrigued by it all as she’s been over these past several months, she’s had enough of her own family drama to deal with without being distracted by anyone else’s. she offers a faint smile in return, chin dipping in acknowledgement. “that’d be helpful. i thought teenagers were supposed to be too obsessed with technology not to have their phones with them at all times?”

“Then I’m sure it’s lovely to meet you.” Which seemed like what she was supposed to say, and a lot politer than questioning the other which was what she wanted to do. Bombarding someone with questions wasn’t exactly the best impression. “That’s what I’ve heard, but someone’s got to be the weird exception.” The jovial tone in her voice was perhaps a little too forced, so she toned it down before speaking again. “I spent most of my summer staring at my phone screen, thought it might be best to try and cut back a little after that.Especially when your phone tells you how long you were on it and that can get a little worrying. I don’t need a physical reminder of how long I spend on it.”

“Yeah, I’m fine,” Emily lied. It was all too easy of a lie now for her to tell. How many times had she said those words over and over again? Maybe one day she would believe it herself. “I just really don’t feel in the mood for class. But I’ve been working on a few pottery pieces. I’m trying a few new techniques to see which ones I like best. If you ever want to learn how to do something, just let me know. I actually teach a painting class on Saturday afternoons. You’re more than welcome to stop by. It’s fun and a lot of people seem to really enjoy it.”

Nodding at the answer, she had no reason to argue against it. “Pottery pieces?” Now that she assumed may be something the other would want to talk about, and something she wouldn’t mind hearing about. “How long have you been making things that way? It always look cathartic, and you end with something amazing - a win, win.” For someone with artistic skills at least, which she assumed the other did. “Really?” She piper up with a smile, before it faltered.” ... Is it for beginners?” She may have no problem admitting she wasn’t the most artistic person in the world, but she had a problem being in a classroom when she felt she wasn’t as advanced as everyone else.

“ right, or a bakery i’d spend every cent i had there. but the discounts though, it’s a hard bargain. “  vera has to agree with skylar, and to be fair ? she quite liked teaching even if the thought of coffee and sweets made her hungry. “ that sounds so good, i know what i’m getting now a honey croissant too. seriously ? i need the recipe for that, i have to try it tomorrow. “

“I don’t think I’d mind working in a bakery. Food I got used to working around, but it also helps that I only like eating at certain times. I can get why people would spend so much money there though - everyone has their kryptonite.” Routines were something she’d always found comforting growing up, and with how crazy things seemed to have become lately - they were something she’d grown to rely on again. “Despite what I just said - croissants do always sound like a good idea. Uh-huh, it’s even better if you can find zero calorie syrup to use to make the drink, then you can totally lie and say it’s healthy for you, despite still being full of caffeine. I can for sure show you the link I found for it. And... Oh, what about you? What would be your go to order normally? Seems the polite thing to ask.”

“ coffee is one of those things you try once and you’re just hooked. oh believe me it’s a serious struggle just being here makes me want one. “ vera has to admit, in fact she really wanted one but had already had caffeine for the day. so it just wasn’t possible. a woman could dream though. “ that’s not basic at all. i love lattes. the true question here is what kind of latte ? i hope you don’t say something too simple, there’s such a true variety with lattes. no ! i totally feel the same way, but i’ll still drink a cold one even if i’m freezing because you’re right it’s not the same at all. “

“That’s one of the reasons I don’t think I could get a job in a coffee shop. Any money I make would be taken right back because of how many drinks I’d order.” Making the words sound a little more dramatic than they were, she reasoned a little positive dramatics were just what the day called for. “I think today’s a honey latte sorta day - still sorta basic, but not always a bad thing right? Though I think if I was at home and making it myself I’d go for a cupcake one, that took my favourite spot the first time I tried it.”
