V's head was pounding. Her vision kept going in and out, pixels floating in front of her relatively new Kiroshi optics. Her ears kept ringing and she was trying hard to keep her hands from shaking as she clutched the necklace Misty had made her. A pendant with the bullet Vic had fished out of her frontal lobe. If she hadn't seen Takemura take Dexter DeShawn out with her own eyes, she would have been hunting him down herself....though, she was pretty sure that now his sights were set on her.
Her optics flickered between her hazel to a foreign dark brown as she stared at the two pill bottles on her nightstand. Omega-blockers in one bottle. Meant to slow down the bastard that was apparently swimming behind her brain pan. Then....Pseudoendotrizine. A few doses down the hatch and it would be like giving up. It would hand the engram the reigns. Allow this dick in her head to take over and kill off what was left of her completely.
She'd barely been out of Vic's office for two hours and she was already weighing the sanctity of her own life. Wondering what would be easier. What would leave her with the least amount of pain.
What the hell was she thinking?
She could almost hear Jackie now....
Chica, you can't just give up! Give that el cabrón what for!
Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath, picking up the Pseudoendotrizine, she tossed it in the trash. That wasn't an option. It couldn't be.
Turning back toward her bed, she glanced up toward the open window, surprised to see a rather livid Johnny standing between her and her intended destination. They'd not spoken to one another yet. She'd only seen his memories of a life long lost. Watched him plant a bomb as if it was with her own hands.
"What the...."
....fuck is going on?
They both stated, like a shared thought mid stream of consciousness.
Let me go! Let me out of here, or I'll fucking kill you myself!
"What's what you're already doing asshole! Slowly but surely. I'm not letting you win! I've been through too much to...." She started before the engram was gone, though it reappeared right behind her. Hand gripping her nearly seafoam colored hair tightly in mechanical fingers.
How.....? He wasn't supposed to be real. He wasn't supposed to be able to physically hurt her! Only taking her over....what the?
Her head hit the plexiglass window hard, leaving blood from her nose in her wake, and she grabbed her bottle of pills on the way down as the nightstand was knocked over. Shaking hands popped two into her mouth, taking them dry, struggling to swallow them down before she blacked out for the umpteenth time in the last few days.
When she woke again, the front of her shirt was bloody and she felt like hell, but Johnny was gone. At least, his engram was for now.
She didn't bother cleaning up yet, sinking into the soft sheets of her bed, He dug out her phone. She couldn't call Jackie, but she could sure as fuck reach out to someone. She needed to fill him in anyway. Tell him about their friends death.
When the line picked up, she realized just how strained her voice sounded.
"Mare.... Can you come over? I really need to see you. I need help."
Mare picked up immediately. He hadn't heard form her in what he considered was too long. Even though it was just a few days.
Hearing her, though, he didn't even answer her verbally, slipping into the shadows and appearing in her apartment. He walked closer to the bed, looking her over and feeling the fear rolling off of her.
"Hey, hey…what happened?" he asked, sitting down on the edge of the bed. He had only glanced as the mess in the room, instead reaching a gentle hand out to assess the damage to her face.
V looked a little surprised at his eyes going black and she sighed when he gave his full name. Still..... He'd been here for her through a lot. This was still Mare. She trusted him despite the hair on the back of her neck standing on end. This whole situation was fucked.
"Valarie," she mumbled, meeting his gaze. She wondered briefly how he planned to get Yorinobu to talk....but then again, he seemed to have his ways. Johnny hadn't been too willing either, but here they were. Though she didn't think, from his tone, that he planned on being so nice to the new emperor of Night City. That thought made her stomach turn sour. The very man she'd watched murder his father, was about to be in power. As of today.
"Well, I'll be damned. I've heard of things like you. Never seen one though. Least not in so many words. Always thought people were the only true evil," Johnny muttered, leaning forward a little with his elbows on his knees.
"Fine, we had our little pow wow, and I'll try my best to play nice, but if so.... I need a little wiggle room. I've got some unfinished biz with Arasaka. Something I think we can both benefit from."
"Hey, Matt can I....ask your help for something else? I don't even know what I'm doing, and I may not be able to do it, but.... I need someone that knows about life and death, and other than my Babbo, who isn't willing to help me, that's you." — Paultin to Mattaniah
"If it's in relation to resurrection…I can't do that anymore, and even when I could there was always a price. Equal exchange," he said, his wings giving a sharp flick.
It wasn't a refusal to helps with whatever Paultin needed. Just a warning concerning the cost of whatever he was looking into.
"No.... No no one died again. Thankfully. Just, uh...." He scratched the back of his neck.
"Look, Uncle Matt, I've died eight different times. Eventually my luck is gonna run out. Okay? I don't want to leave them again. Escher, my papa. Any of them. My Babbo. I can't....I can't do that. I can't face death again. I wanna try to use the ring's power to make myself immortal. If I could use it to build a real, flesh and blood body, something tells me if I could harness the power properly, that I could use it to make myself impervious to death."
Chase moved to the couch where his brother was sitting, his wings enveloping them both as he let his eyes drift to the screen. He wasn't sure what movie was playing. He didn't really care.
"Just....wanna be close," he mumbled quietly. He'd seemed to want to almost always be in Mare's presence since he came back.
Mare automatically leaned against Chase, keeping his eyes on the screen but letting out an audible hum as his head rested on Chase's shoulder.
Honestly, Mare didn't mind. He was more than happy to have Chase back. He didn't say anything, but he knew if Chase wanted to talk, he would.
There were a lot of things he wanted to say, but none of them wanted to form into real words. Everything was just the same. For the most part. Life..... Had gone on without him. The kids were living their lives, even if Layla had some issues. He'd gone back to running Hope Haven, but even it had been business as usual thanks to Mare, Evelyn, Faith, Jason, and Jace. Everything was just as he'd left it... and in a way that hurt in a way he didn't know how to explain. He was gone and life just kept right on moving. Leaving without him. What the hell kind of mark had he left on the world if it could do easily leave him behind?
He knew that wasn't a logical way to think. It probably should have been comforting, but it wasn't.
Tears sprang to his eyes, but he didn't let them fall. He couldn't. Opening his mouth once to speak, he couldn't. He was afraid his voice would fail him.
I feel lost. Everyone kept on going. Kept moving. You guys don't need me. I used to think I knew what I was doing. What my purpose was, but..... I don't think I know anymore.
"Listen, I know you think I'm scheming, I swear to you....Phantom, I'm only asking you the extent of your powers so I know what to expect from Gemma, because we already got a small glimpse of what she can do, and I'm willing to bet there's a lot more. If she's anything like Jasper, and she does seem to be, then her powers will start surfacing soon. I need to know how to handle them." — Dante to Phantom
Phantom was currently rocking her to sleep, letting his own shadows curl up around her.
A soft chuckle escaped the demon as he kept his gaze focused on Gemma.
"There's quite the list, Anima. But for starters, charm and shapeshifting are certainly the main ones you should be concerned about. That and shadow play. But you already struggled through that with Jasper, didn't you…"
Everything in Dante wanted to snap at how snide he felt each word was from Phantom's lips. Mocking. "Please.... I've asked a million times, don't call me anima. The game is over and I'm no longer playing," Dante muttered, rolling his eyes.
"As for Jasper, yes. We had quite the difficult time with him as far as his shadows, but I think you're correct in the shape shifting being a larger component. Something to keep an eye on," he sighed, looking over the baby in his arms.
She was beautiful. Just like Jasper. Still very much of herself and Mare. Despite Phantom's intent. His instincts told him to take her. To keep her from him, but he knew that wasn't fair. Not only to Phantom, but to Gemma.
"I can only assume you intend to teach her more magic as she gets older?"
"My Babbo, uhhhh my dad, you know him, I think. Dante, or at least, you've met him. Look, he knows more about life and death than anyone I know, but he's made it pretty clear he can't help me. I need to know a way to extend my life. Indefinitely..." He breathed.
"Extending ones life is quite the request that does have consequences tied to it. Is there a reason why someone like yourself would need to find a way to have that be done? And are the consequences something you are willing.to accept in the end?"
"Listen, I've died eight times. I'm pretty sure that's my fair share, but I know one day my luck is gonna run out. If and when it does, I'm leaving several people behind that can't die. I just.... I can't leave them again. I can't," he sighed, thinking of Escher and his father.
"I know there will be consequences and I'm willing to face them as needed."
Alan sat at the bar at Charlie's, debating a beer. He could really use one. He'd only been away from the institution for a couple days, but then again....alcohol made him worse.
"Uh..." He muttered, looking over the menu, sticky from sitting on the bar too. Glancing next to him, the guy sitting there was covered in smudges and maybe charcoal or paint? It was hard to tell. He also wasn't so sure he was real. He felt....different.
Sighing, he finally ordered, deciding alcohol wasn't the worst thing for him before he glanced dark eyes warily to the other.
"You okay pal?"
— Alan for Jack
Jack couldn't tell what he was getting from the stranger, but he gave a smile and a nod, taking a sip of his drink.
"I'm good. Not much to complain about honestly," he shared. "My biggest problem at the moment is teaching my kid to not freeze my paints."
"Uh....you just feel different. Not like everyone else. You're not the only one here though, and I think you know that," he breathed quietly, following his line of sight.
"Look, really it doesn't matter. I've been uh....taught it doesn't do me good to say things. I've been having issues a long time. I know how crazy it sounds." He needed to shut the hell up. Alan knew better than most what happened when he said something to the wrong people.

Johnny was quiet a moment. His entire form seeming to glitch. Blue streaks appearing where he was standing that looked a lot more like lines of computer code than a person. It was only for an instant though as he let out a sigh, shoving off the wall as he did so.
"Alright. Alright. We'll talk. It isn't like I'm trying to kill her. I admit, I've done some stupid shit, and I've taken plenty of lives, but not like this. I don't have a choice. I can't stop it, even if I wanted to," he muttered as V moved toward a threadbare couch and sat down, running her hands through her hair.
Even in her dreams, her head was pounding.
"I saw in your memories that they.... I saw them hook you up to a machine before you died. I assume that was soul killer? It slotted your soul into the relic?"
Johnny nodded moving to sit on an overturned milk crate that was being used as a makeshift table across from her. He couldn't bring himself to sit next to her.
"Yeah, then my soul was stored and my consciousness was in Mikoshi. Think of it like cloud storage for the human code, in computer terms," he explained, looking between them.
"You say possession, but it's not like I'm trying to. I don't see a way we both make it out of this, and quite frankly, I dunno what makes either of you think a thief deserves to live any more than I do. I've seen her memories and her hands are no cleaner than mine. Or should I remind you that you were ready to let your boss blackmail you into murdering an innocent woman when you worked for those pigs?"
V swallowed thickly at his accusations, not wanting to admit he was right. They'd both been dead, and now they were both sharing her body. They were both just lost souls in a walking corpse. Reaching over, she took Mare's hand again, trying to steel herself.
"Everyone here has made some dumbass mistakes, some worse than others," he admitted, letting V take his hand. "And a few of us have killed more people than we wanna admit."
"Trust me, not all possessions are voluntary, either. But fair point. You don't want this. She doesn't want this. But ya'll are stuck," he pointed out, rubbing circles on the back of V's hand.
"Don't make things harder than they need to be. Don't add to the list of dead intentionally, don't accelerate the process," he told them both. "But in defense of why I'd rather she stay than you, first off, she's my friend. I know her. She's got a good heart in a tough-ass world. Second, this is her body. Died once or not, this is hers and nobody should ever, ever be made to feel like their skin isn't their own. To be pushed back, outta sight to the point of disappearing entirel, all because someone or something else is stronger and more present in their head space."
"Say I agreed? Say I said fine, she could keep it? I still can't stop it. I'm still eating away at her until Val here is gone," Johnny sighed.
"Shut it, no one uses my name. That means you," V grit, her voice still strained. Suddenly feeling far more vulnerable, she pulled away from Mare's touch, tucking her arms around her, crossing them over her chest. She wanted to just sleep. Forget the dreams. Forget the fight. Just shut down....
"Hey, I'm....I get it. Okay? We were both coming at this from a place of fear. I'm obviously overstepping here, and I'm the outsider. I get it, but I can't stop the problem. So.... I'll cooperate. I'll try to help figure an answer, but I don't fully grasp how I'm even doing this, so I can only do so much," the engram stated.
"Best bet is to find a way to talk to someone on the team that made the relic. Seems like Yorinobu is out since he's trying to frame you for murder, but maybe someone else could be persuaded." As he spoke, he was looking Mare over. The guy that had so quickly come to V's aid. He obviously wasn't human. No one could just barge into dreams like this without serious tech, and he certainly didn't look decked out enough.
"You sound like you're talking from experience, pal."
