I’m 30 and face a lot of age discrimination in the tumblr rp comm so admitting my age sucks.
I was reading through the comments in the tags, and I noticed a lot of:
“As long as you’re not creepy, I’m okay!”
“As long as you’re not a pedo!”
People over 29 are not automatically creepy or pedos. They are just as likely to be either as a 20 year old; most are less creepy because they are more experienced. Age discrimination is pretty gross. Does anyone really think that 29+ yr olds are going to think less about the concerns of smutting with someone under a age of majority? No, they probably think about it more because they haven’t been a grown child for years and face the real world more then the kiddos around.
Saying “As long as you’re not X” is pretty gross because it is implying that they are more likely to and contributes to the very reason why people over 29 are so reluctant about sharing their age — It IS age-based discrimination.
Also, just because someone is 30 yrs old does not mean they are something less than because they are still interested in rping. If you do the math based on the theory that most rpers begin around the age of 15-17, they may have been rping since the early 2000s, and some for even longer. That is 15+ yrs, so why would they suddenly be disinterested in something they have been doing for longer than some rpers are in total age. Do you know how many years of experience 15 yrs adds up to? If you want to become a good writer, then seek out those with the most experience.
If you don’t discriminate against rpers for being younger, then don’t do it because they are older. Nothing in life should have a time limit or expiration on interests that make people happy and bring no harm to others.
Personally, I hope to still have a passion and love for rping when I’m 90 yrs old and sitting in my nursing home. Never forget, kiddos, that you’ll be “old” someday and facing people telling you not to love the things you love because you’re past your expiration date.
