“Not me”
"Definitely not. I mean, Jer and 'Lena are alright."
"Why are kids so damn stupid?"
"They get it from somewhere, Jenn."
"I just saw some dumbass walk into a wall because they were texting"
"I'm not surprised. It was a regular occurrence when I was teaching... 'cept then you had the crash, boom, bang of the lockers."
"I don’t understand people nowadays"
"That makes two of us. -- You okay?"

"You can go see them at least once. Just so they know you’re okay. It’s only fair to them." Adelina had seen all the stress that her parents had gone through when Alaric just left without a word. She was the one who had to comfort her mother and tell her that he would come back and that everything would be okay. She couldn’t imagine going back home and having to tell them that Alaric was dead or that he just didn’t want to see them.
"I don’t need you to protect me, Ric. I’m not like you, I’m not going to get consumed by this darkness that you’re talking about. I’ve been doing this for a while now and I’m perfectly fine. Yeah, I get hurt here and there. But they’re just scratches that’ll heal in time." she crossed her arms in front of her chest and looked up at her brother. "I’m not leaving and I’m not just going to stop. There are others here that hunt. I’ll become friends with them, learn a few of their tricks and teach them a few of mine."
"I'd love to be able to do that. The thing is... I've got some pretty powerful enemies. If they followed me -- if mom and dad got pulled into this, too -- I'm stuck, here. There are people here... you mentioned Katherine? She's just one of them -- they'll kill the people we love just to prove a point, Addy. And my enemies hate me as much as I hate them. Otherwise... you know I'd visit them in a second."
Alaric stepped towards her carefully, afraid she'd flinch away from him, afraid of her rejection. She wasn't gonna stop. Nothing he would say would make her stop. If there was one thing Adelina had inherited from their mother, and it was her ability to put her foot down and get her way. "-- The Mikaelsons; they're Originals. Just leave them to me, okay? I get that I can't stop you, but these guys are practically unkillable. Luckily, so am I. So... I'm calling dibs, here." His brows rose hopefully. "Let me at least help you."
"Look, I know you’re just trying to protect me from all of this but I don’t need someone to protect me. I save lives and that makes me happy and you’re not going to change my mind." Adelina reached out, grabbing onto her brother’s hands "I’m not that little girl anymore, Ric. I can take care of myself, isn’t that what you want? At least I can defend myself against vampires unlike other people." Of course, she knew that no matter what she said it wouldn’t change her brothers mind on this but she was trying to make it clear that she felt like she had to do this. Adelina shrugged at the mention of her parents "They’ve been worried sick since you left considering you’ve barely kept any contact with us. They weren’t all that happy when I told them that I was going to find you. You should come back home, be with us. If you want me to stop hunting that’s what you can do, just come back home."
"Addy... you know I can't bring... what I am -- I can't go to them. Not like this." He shook his head, jaw rigid with grief. He missed his mom and dad; sure he'd flown the nest, but Alaric had always had a good relationship with his parents, at least until Isobel disappeared. Once upon a time, they spoke at least once a day.
"There's a difference between being able to defend yourself and actively seeking them out..." Them. As if he weren't a vampire. He shook his head again as he pinched the bridge of his nose and blinked, hard. "I looked for them, and I found them, and it's because of my... this need for vengeance after what they did to Isobel -- I died a hell of a lot more than once." Nine freaking times to be exact, none of them painless. "-- There's more than vampires, other things that can hurt you, manipulate you... make you crazy. My hatred for them was used against me. I just want to protect you from that -- the darkness, Adelina. It gets under your skin."
"Some immature human who thinks he has the strength to hunt the supernatural." Damon shrugged, "Everybody ends up hating them at one point or another." He shrugged. "Well, I’ll look out for her to, watch what she does, all that jazz."
But you won't actually remove the threat. So what good was that? He didn't understand what was so hard about actually taking action -- but fine. He'd do it himself. He didn't need Damon's help -- not with anything, not anymore.
"This is her," he muttered, taking out his old wallet that he'd found in his loft, back home, and showing him an old photo. It was before he'd married Isobel, when he was leaving for college -- one last family photo before he moved out. His dad was frowning in the back, clearly unimpressed with having his photo taken, and his mother was on her tip toes, trying to give Ric a kiss on the cheek. He pointed at the short blonde with green eyes grinning at the camera with sass, standing on front of her older and much taller brother.
"They’re not going to die, Ric. I’ve been watching them for awhile now and they’re still alive, I’ll continue to watch over them. Don’t worry about them. And in the process, if your sister does go after them, I’ll try my hardest not to hurt her." Damon added, knowing from the look of Ric’s face, his sister meant a lot to him. "Is she a supernatural hunter or is she like that Ryder kid?"
Great. So he'd stand by, but not actually do anything about it -- just watch. He had to wonder when his 'buddy' had gotten so passive... Ric didn't look him in the eye, kept staring into his glass of whiskey miserably.
"Who the hell's Ryder?" he questioned with a scoff, and downed his second double shot. "-- All I know is that somehow... she ended up hating vampires. I don't know anything else. She wasn't exactly keen on opening up to me once she knew."
"So you’re afraid Katherine is going to go after your sister?" Damon asked, playing with the edges of the blood bag. "If Katherine goes after your sister, I’ll kill her myself." He said, looking up to Alaric. "Why are you so set on your sister dying?" Damon asked now confused.
"And Jeremy, Elena, and Jenna..." Alaric downed the whiskey. "If you haven't noticed, being a hunter doesn't pan out well." He died nine. Fucking. Times. His sister didn't even have a ring to bring her back -- and it wasn't like he'd been a full-fledged hunter for most of those deaths. No, many of them had only been a consequence of living in Mystic Falls. But here she was... staying, because of him, but not near enough so that he could protect her.
"Adelina," he sighed, passing a hand over her face. "Her name is Adelina... my parents had a stupid obsession with stupid names..." He shook his head, lips quivering slightly before he covered his mouth with his hand again. "I hadn't seen her since I left to search for Isobel -- five years... I gave up knowing my little sister to protect her from all... all of this..." He poured himself more to drink.
Damon sighed, knowing there was no way he could talk Alaric out of it. “I’m just saying— you’re putting yourself on a death mission.” With that, he dropped it. Looking around the house, he sat back some. “So how are you enjoying your little vacation?”
Of course Damon wasn't for it. Because that would make too much sense, right? Protecting the people he cared about was a thing of the past, apparently, even when it was verging on easy. Ric was alone. Again. Great. Just... great.
"Just fucking awesome," he sighed, lip curling unpleasantly before he tore into his blood bag and drained it. "-- Really great." He crumpled it, throwing it in the pile of broken glass. "My sister found me. She's a hunter. Katherine knows about her already. I'm gonna lose her any day now because she can't stand that I'm a vampire and won't stick near me." He put his head in his hands. Oh, yeah... whirlwind of loss and grief, coming right up. Why couldn't he see that Katherine and Klaus had to go? Why the hell was he always in this crap alone, now? What had changed so much when he was buried that everyone just magically forgot... they were the bad guys...?
He poured himself some more whiskey off the table. "She's gonna die. Or end up like me. I tried to keep her from this. It's why I never mentioned her." His hand shook as he picked up the glass. So, Damon was into killing again, but not the people who actually deserved to die. He wondered if the reason why no one was on his side any more was because suddenly they were on the wrong side... how would he know?
"Did you say dissing?" she laughed and rolled onto her back, "jesus you sound like Jeremy" she chuckled. Turning her head to look at him, she shrugged, "I guess I can live with that, Mr. Saltzman"
He shrugged as she said he sounded like Jeremy -- he did spend a lot of time with teenagers once upon a time. "Good," he said, as she confirmed her approval. "I'm just tryna keep you safe," Ric assured her, as he played idly with her hair.
