Also this was in 1998 which means some of you might need a history lesson on why she was being asked this question in the first place (and it’s nothing to do with modern headcanons about gender-fluid Haruka which are good and fine). It has to do with a website called Save Our Sailors aka SOS. On the surface it was a website to “bring back the dub” (after it was canceled the first time) but really it was just a general fan page hive of scum, villainy and rampant homophobia.

This was the website that touted a few stories about Haruka and Michiru, none of which were canon.

1. “Gals being pals” - this was some deal about how it’s “very common” in Japan for girls have ~~very close~~ female friends whom they touch and kiss freely and parents are happy their girls have such role models but NO HOMO TOTES STRAIGHT

2. “Prince Uranus” - definitely the most infamous of them all, (and if SOS wasn’t the first it was certainly the most prominent website to endorse this theory), was that Haruka was a “reborn” prince of Uranus that was in love with the Princess of Neptune (think, basically, the Endymion and Serenity story) only oopsie-poopsie! she was reborn as a girl! Although she has the SOUL of the Prince and really she IS the prince so really she IS a guy and NO HOMO TOTES STRAIGHT

3. Uranus is actually a man in drag. Please understand by this they did NOT mean she is trans, (trans women are women after all), but a man who, as a senshi, appeared to be female because of senshi-rules but no, totally a guy (this related convolutedly to the Prince Uranus thing IRCC) but, again, as you can guess: NO HOMO TOTES STRAIGHT

Anyway, basically, Naoko saying that Uranus is a woman was almost certainty in response to fans’ questions about her gender - questions based on the rumors spread by the SOS website and fandom at the time.

Naoko I’m sure didn’t have all this history (god I hope she didn’t) or understand where the questions were coming from, and answered them to the best of her ability. Uranus is a woman. Neptune is a woman, they are both women, women in love.

NOW, that SAID, the later in that exact same article she says “Uranus has the heart of man” so basically it’s NOT non-canon to say she is gender-fluid. But that’s not the question being answered here, basically.
