On the couch, Kai started eating his junk food quickly.  The man always had a ravenous appetite despite just being a warlock.  As he started to gobble down the pizza, he washed it down with mountain dew.  “Yeah, anyone here you like?”  He asked, curious about the other man.  “Oh?  Who is it?  Is it a woman?  A man? Or some other cool person?”  Now this was some exciting stuff and Kai tended to be a helpless romantic.  “C’mon, I am sure you are better than you give yourself credit for.  And it would be awesome to see you happy.”

Not that Kai was trying to push him out of his comfort zone, he just happened to be a romantic for everyone.  He wanted everyone to experience love.  “We can drop it if you want, I don’t want you to be uncomfortable or anything.  I just love, love.”

“Nah, man. It’s fine, I don’t mind talking about it.” It didn’t bother him that Kai was interested in his non-existent love life. In a way it was nice to have someone to bounce idea off of and get advice. Luka didn’t have anyone he could go to about crushes anymore, not since he’d fallen out with his older brother. “It’s faar from exciting though.”

“Um, my current love interest is a her and I’m not sure you would know who she is...” Luka trailed off for a moment before continuing. “Pretty sure I blew it, anyway and she just sees me as a friend. Didn’t really make a move and we’ve been a bit distant lately. My fault really.” Taking a big gulp of his drink, he simultaneously he shrugged. “Told you wasn’t very interesting.”

Fane nodded, quickly browsing the shelves. “How do you feel about the horror genre? Or supernatural?” He grabbed two comics, holding them up.

“These two are pretty good,” Fane continued. “Archie vs. Predator, which is what it says on the tin, the characters from the Archie comics mashed up with Predator. It has survival horror vibes. This one is Black Magick, with a police detective that is also a witch. It’s not like super accurate with real witches, honestly, but the read’s still good. If you’re not into that… I’d say looking at manga might be your best bet. Most comics are superhero based.”

“Horror I don’t mind. Is this more of a thriller, mystery type, or gore?” Either were good options, a good thriller always held his attention. Luka watched as two comics were pulled off the shelves, instantly intrigued by the covers.

“I’ve heard of Archie comics before.” Luka took the two recommended comics in hand, leafing through them briefly as the plots were described. It didn’t take much to convince him. He wanted to try new stuff. Worse thing to happen, he’d have some comics to donate. “True. Lot of them are based of a superhero. I’m just looking for something new to try out and these sound good.” Luka would have these finished in a few days though, so maybe one more be nice. “What’s your favorite comic?” He asked, starting to scan the titles of some manga on a nearby shelf.

Admittedly, August was unprepared. He was used to training for months before a big event, a tournament, something he knew was important and would take work and skill but no amount of preparation could have readied him for this. There was no instruction manual that would detail how to make it easier to speak with an estranged sibling, especially one that he had had a part in estranging. He kept his eyes trained on Luka, observing every fluctuation of his features, the way his brows came together when August admitted that he came here in secret without the knowledge of their dad or family. It was easier to pack up and leave if he announced he was going to New Guinea instead of going to see his brother, no questions were asked, they just asked him to call every once in a while if he needed more money and that was it. 

He didn’t know how to respond to Luka but was aware that his silence was not an acceptable response. He did his best to ignore the constant vibration of his charmed ring and even slipped his hand into his pants pocket so he could wiggle that ring off his finger in secret just to get it to stop alerting him. 

“Look,” he started to say, mouth feeling dry, “It’s not easy to accept what you became. I mean, you know what our old man is like. If it had been me then the same thing would have happened,” he paused, lips pressed together into a firm line as he considered how many times he’d almost been turned during a hunt against a werewolf. It very well could have been him. “Anyway, I’m not here to argue with you. Is there.. somewhere we can go to talk?”

Would it had gone down the same way if it had been August, or his other sibling that had been turned into a werewolf? A question he’d never truly know the answer to. Luka would like to think he’d stick by any of his family in a time of need, but his father was not an easy man to disappoint. It was easy to be judgmental while he wasn’t in his brother’s shoes. It was partially the reason he was even giving August any time out of his day. 

“Umm.” Licking his lips, he cast his gaze to the ground. Luka was lacking any real emotions. Anger, excitement, fear, joy, disappointment, or any feeling would be better than this numbness. “Yeah, I guess we could talk at my place.” He pointed up at his apartment building. August hadn’t answered his question, which bothered him some. 

“You didn’t say why.” Luka gestured him to come along with a small nod in the direction of the apartment complex. “Why you wanted to see me.” Truthfully, he wanted to hear it was because he was missed. It give him a little hope again that some relationships could be amended. “You’re not on the run from the mob, are you.” The joke an attempt to lighten the mood. Banter back and forth like old times.

Fane glanced up at the door for a split moment, smelling the wolf before the door was all the way open. It wasn’t unheard of for other supernatural beings to come into the shop. Actually, Fane had a few wolves that came in somewhat regularly. But this one was one that he didn’t know.

Still, Fane just let the wolf browse, only looking up when he heard the other male speak. “Hi,” he greeted. “And sure, I have lots of comic recommendations. But it does depend on what you like and what you’ve already read. And whether you’re only interested in comics or if you’re open to manga as well.”

Luka nodded, the other making a very fair point, he was going to need to know little before making a good recommendation. His hands slid into his pockets as he took a second to mull over how he wanted to answer. He was looking for something new and fresh, not what he normally gravitated towards. 

“I’ve read some manga, though it’s been a long while.” Highschool was the last time he could remember reading a manga series. “Not a hard pass, but comics usually keep my attention longer. I like superhero ones, read a lot of those.” Shrugging, he trailed off for a brief moment. “Sorta want something new and different from what I tend to read now.”

The coffee shop was quiet. Luka had intentionally avoided peak business hours for a chance of privacy. The bell above the door chimed when he pushed the door open. The overpowering smell of coffee beans filled his nostrils. He never was the coffee type. It tasted bitter to him, no matter what type of drink he got. Tea was his go to in the morning for a pick me up.

Today, in particular, he looked disheveled. The full moon was always hard for him and it showed. Luka had large dark circles under his eyes. Normally he was well put together, his clothes business casual, his hair neat, but not today. He had an oversized hoodie on in attempt to hide that he wasn’t put together today.

“Heyy, Mila.” He greeted, taking a seat from across her. Luka leaned back against the back rest of his seat. “I hope I didn’t keep you waiting long.” Where ever he went, he tried to be early, but failed to do so today.

Secret Realm was a store he was surprised that he hadn’t visited sooner. The previous night he spent his night reading reviews of the small shop. This entire time he’d been spending all of his time at the library when this hidden gem was right around the corner. Luka hit the smiley that he was satisfied with Google maps directions and slid his phone into his pocket before opening the door to the shop.

Luka loved the smell of books and he took in a deep breath in, taking in the store. There were shelves filled of games and comics. For a moment, he thought he died and gone to heaven. Beginning to browse the board games first, he made his way further into the store.

“Uh-hey.” He greeted. Luka was still practicing he abilities, but he knew the other was male was not human. What species specifically, he could not tell at the moment. “Do you have any recommendations?” A hand ran through his wavy locks. “For comics.” He added, stepping from the games to make it less confusing.

Of the rings that adorned his fingers, the one on his index began to vibrate silently around his digit, an indication that a werewolf was nearby. No shit, he couldn’t help but think but the vibration and his brother’s surprise at seeing him had sobered August somewhat. It was easy to forget just by seeing the familiar image of his younger brother before him what he had become but the vibration of his charmed ring brought reality back in like a freight train and August couldn’t dodge it.

“No,” he swallowed hard, expression hardening with every passing millisecond, “No, no one died.” Except that wasn’t entirely true. It had been him, the Luka that had been human had died, a fact that August was still grieving. He blinked and took in the new form of his brother, “You got bigger,” he said it as neutrally as he possibly could but no doubt a hint of disdain had edged its way through his tone knowing the reason why must be attributed to his being a werewolf. “I wanted to see you,” he started to say, hesitant and added in quietly, “Dad… doesn’t know I’m here.”

Relief washed over him. His family was alive and well, though, he supposed that they didn’t consider him a member of the family anymore. That was something that he was gonna have to learn to live with going forward. Why Augustus was here now, trying to talking to him didn’t make sense. Shifting his weight from side to side, he adjusted the strap over his shoulder. His brother didn’t come out and say he disapproved, but he could hear it in the tone of his voice. 

“I’ve packed on some weight.” Luka was still lean, but more muscular now. His former self lacked any athletic skills, but now he could keep up in sports if he wanted to do so. “Not that much of a difference from before.” He was still the same Luka, but he knew that would be difficult to convince August of that.

“Yeah?” Nervously, he looked over his brother a little more closely. He’d wished for a day like this to come for so long, but now that it had arrived he didn’t know what to do. Luka had accepted that his family no longer had room for him in their lives and he’d adjusted accordingly, but now the door had been reopened. “Oh.” Disappointed that this seemed to be some secret, he sighed heavily. “Why?” His brows furrowed together as he continued to speak. “I don’t mean to be rude, but I just figured I was out of your life for good.”

Place: Outside Luka’s Downtown Apartment Who: @xxlukajonesxx​

The town was relatively small and it seemed that everyone seemed to at least know of someone else so it didn’t take much asking around before he found out where Luka might be at a certain time of the day. Small townies really needed to stop obsessing over what their neighbors were doing and focus on themselves he thought as he made his way to the apartment building downtown that was meant to be where his brother lived. It had been a long time since they’d seen each other and no words had been exchanged between the two once their father delivered that ultimatum that resulted in the youngest son being kicked out of their lives. August had spent a long time trying to determine how he felt about it all, working out between opinions that had been forced into his mind since childhood and forming new ones for himself. 

He found himself sitting on a bus stop bench outside of the building trying not to make it entirely too obvious that he was keenly watching the front door waiting to see if his brother might exit and he could get away with passing him by on the street instead of forcing himself to get up and start knocking on doors. Just about an hour passed before the door of the apartment building opened and out walked the familiar frame of his younger brother. The emotions that suddenly gripped at his chest had been ones he hadn’t been expecting to feel as he watched the younger man proceed down the street. He almost found himself leaving with the intention of walking in the opposite direction and leaving his brother alone but he didn’t. One foot in front of the other led him to catch up with him, “Luka,” he called out against the sensation of his throat closing up, “Wait.” It’s me. Your brother. Were they even still brothers?

Laptop bag in tow, like always, Luka left his apartment building. The door was closed behind him and he even pulled on it to make sure it was locked before fully heading out. Luka wasn’t paying attention to his surroundings. He was too engrossed with his phone to notice his brother’s presence outside the apartment complex. It wasn’t until a voice he hadn’t heard in over a year reached his ears did he pull his gaze from the glowing screen. For half a second, he didn’t believe it was his older brother, August. Luka initially wanted to continue to press on, pretend he didn’t hear his name being called out, but he couldn’t bring himself to flat out ignore him. 

“August?” Turning around, he eyed the older male that had a similar slim frame as him. The family resemblance was hard to miss, though since they’d last seen one another, Luka’s appearance had changed. Though still thin, he was more muscular. In general, he carried himself differently. “What are you doing here?” Genuinely confused, he tried to think of why his brother would be here and reaching out now. “Oh my god, no, no, no...” His mossy green eyes widened with panic. “Did someone die?”

         “I suspect most people don’t give up as easily as I did,” Valentina commented, looking at him as he worked. It also was probably not easy to be doing all of this in a cabin in the woods rather than in an actual home. “So…perhaps I should be saying at least I did not keep trying to the point of breaking it.”

          Valentina nodded though when he asked if that was everything. “I’m not really sure what that is,” she admitted of him speaking of the router, observing what he wore as well as what he was doing. It was not how she had seen him in the past but their paths seemed to have a challenging time aligning with one another. She’d had seen Luka since New Years Eve and felt poorly for it. He was one of her favourite people since coming to the town and she liked what he did.

            “What is the…the artwork on your clothing?” she asked him, hopeful she could show her interest and Luka would know she had missed his company.

“Your router connects your devices, like your laptop or phone, to your modem.” Luka explained, not sure if Len really wanted to know. Lot of people that weren’t tech savvy didn’t really want to learn, they just wanted it setup. “The modem is where you get your internet from your provider.” He continued, looking back at Len for a moment before continuing plugging everything in. 

“Oh, this?” He asked, pulling his shirt down to display the artwork better. “That is Link.” He said, letting go of the bottom of his shirt. “He’s a character in a video game I play.” He further explained, thinking to himself that she was going to right him off as a lazy gamer now. “I only dress like this on my days off and when I plan to stay in and game. That’s what I was doing before you called.”

“Did the guy by chance set you up with an internet provider and give you a modem?” Luka asked, pausing what he was currently doing.

While Luka ordered the pizza, Kai made an order for several Chinese dishes and extra spring rolls.  If they had all evening, then at the very least they will have tons of food.  “Okay, good.”  It was a relief to know he be able to bring out the bong, although he might just use the pipe for ease.

Once at his place, they placed the food down in the kitchen and Kai pulled down some paper plates his mother bought him, knowing he would never do dishes.  “For real, my stomach is growling.”  He nodded, “yeah sounds good.  Get the game going and let’s chill and eat.”

While the game was downloading and they made their plates, Kai plopped down on the couch with all his food and a huge cup filled with Mountain Dew.  “So, Luka.  Anyone in to town that tickles your fancy?”

The game was popped into the Xbox One and he hit download before he went to fill up his own food on the paper plates that were provided. His stomach continued to growl as he put as much food as possible on his plate, without making a huge mess. His drink was sat down on the side table, before he plopped down in his seat next to Kai. A giant bite was taken out of his slice of pizza, though he froze for a second at the mention of liking someone. 

“Umm.” Luka swallowed, not sure how he wanted to answer. “Someone that tickles my fancy?” A brow lifted as he glanced over at his friend. “I guess, there is someone I like.” The pizza was dropped back onto his plate and he reached over for his drink. “Doesn’t really matter. I’m not really good when it comes to making a move, or letting anyone know I like them.” Right now, he wasn’t so sure it was a good idea to be in a romantic relationship.

“If only that were actually true but man, I haven’t had anything sour and neon blue in months.” With an encouraging nod she slotted both tubes into the basket, rearranging her grip on the plastic handle of it awkwardly. “This is not a; if you pick one our friendship is over you heathen bullshittery, neither would have also been an acceptable answer if you hated the offerings. Porque no los dos? Both, both is good.” 

“Oh that’s great news! Congratulations.” Mir made a mental note to keep an eye out for a housewarming gift for whenever Luka made the final plans to be on his own. “Not much room at his place or just ready for something new?”

“I thought so but then some family stuff kicked up, as it does every few years and..” she trailed off, browsing the nearest shelf at eye level carefully. “Well, it’s nice to see the people that got me through the first time and you’re in town too, I’m being spoilt.” The smile that stole over Luka’s face reminded her exactly why they’d been such easy friends, the raw enthusiasm still there beneath the hardships of the last few months. “I’ll have to check with her dad because she’s quite literally tiny but hell yeah, I’d love that.”

“You poor soul.” He teased, making a mental note to go down the candy aisle before they left. Naturally, Luka tended to eat healthy. He would never turn down down chips, but when he was at home he’d rather stuff his face with a sandwich, or cook a good meal. “Whew, here I thought it was a huge test.” He spoke with heavy sarcasm in his voice. “The only food I hate is, Brussel sprouts. You throw those in the cart and your on your with them.” He laughed lightly, nodding as he watched both Pringles go into the cart. 

“Nah, there is spaces...” Bathroom was a little crowded with Taurus’ hair products, but that never bothered Luka. “Just, want a sense of normalcy. Having my own place kind of symbolizes a fresh start. I can put the last year behind me.” Hopefully move on from it.

“Well, if you ever need anything, I’m a text away Mir.” It may had been a long while, but Luka would drop anything he was doing to help her out. He hoped she knew that. His fingers danced over some sub bread as he read the labels, grabbing a bag of Italian herb and cheese sub bread and one of the regular and adding it to the cart. “Great. Even if we can get together with your niece, we should game one night.”

No, not really. Jealously is usually a sign you don't trust me and tends cause problems and drama, that I'd rather not deal with.

Assistance || Len&Luka

        Valentina sat on her small lounge as she looked to Luka. There were modern aspects of technology Valentina felt she could do without and other aspects she felt like she actually sort of needed. Though she wasn’t one for using a computer to order things, or to post her feelings to whoever cared for some unknown reason, she did like it as an access to finding information about all that she had missed while she was asleep. Trying to install it all herself had gone…poorly to say the least.

          When Luka had arrived the pile of cords was sat a top a laptop she had purchased and a router, everything the man at the store said she’d need, with the cables all mixed in with one another. “I’m sorry, I tried,” Len insisted, a glass of blood in hand.

It use to bother him. When clients had everything a mess, but he learned over time it came with the territory of the job. ‘At least the tried’, that is what he told himself. One of the end of the cords were grabbed and he started gently shaking it out of the entangled mess, folding it up neatly in his hand and setting it aside. 

“Don’t worry about it. I’ve seen a lot worse.” He said with a small chuckle thinking of all the times he had to do this. His grandmother use to pull out boxes filled with cords and they’d have to sift through it all, just to find out she didn’t have the right cord, even though he knew that from the start. Another one was pulled out of the mess. 

“Is this all you got?” He questioned, figuring it wouldn't be much, but double checked. It was Saturday and he wasn’t dressed as usual. Instead of nice pair jeans or dress pants, he had on comfy pair of light grey sweat pants and a long sleeve shirt, with a cartoon character from one of his favorite games, Zelda. “This shouldn’t take long. I just have to hook up your router.” Luka reached out to the nearest outlet, plugging in the laptop for it to get a full charge.

          Zoya put her phone down and looked up at the old computer in front of her. She didn’t have any sort of office at the firehouse but she sat at the front desk where everyone walked back and forth through. It was nice, the people who worked there were all sweet and nice, greeting her and letting her mess around in the trucks and down the fire pole. It wasn’t the job she was supposed to have, considering what she was at school for, but presently it was the job she was enjoying.

            It was sort of tight though, the job paid good enough but her savings were starting to run low and the human girl was starting to think she maybe couldn’t afford her apartment on her own anymore. Jax had been a potential option a few months ago but since their break up and his trip to Utah she had a pretty strong feeling that was not an option. She needed others. 

              Zee continued to work, answering phones and going through scheduling software, until the front door opened, lifting her eyes to see if it was Luka.

Luka did as he promised and in little under an hour he was standing outside the firehouse, staring at his phone and turning off the GPS. The town was still rather new to him and he was reliant on his phone, or others, most of the time. Slipping his phone in the back pocket before, he pushed open the main door to the firehouse. Zoya was easy enough to spot and he gave a polite wave has he made his way over to her.

“Hey.” He greeted, looking around the place briefly, eyeing the fire pole for a moment, hoping she wouldn’t bring it up and try to make his uncoordinated ass try and go down it. “Looks nice.” He added, not sure what to say, but it was clear that he was proud and happy about her new job. 

“I gotchu something.” Luka sat a little box with a bow on the desk. “It’s nothing fancy. But think of it as a belated birthday gift slash congrats on the new job.” It was a couple twenty five dollar gift card to some of the restaurants around her work, for if she wanted to grab lunch on her breaks.

No one meant to lose contact with people they cared about, in most cases and the many, many miles stretching between them and the pressures of getting by as an adult had let an accidental silence set in from both ends. Mir was never one to overlook a second chance when she got one. “See you get it, you always get it. Praise be the junk food aisle, I want to have so many E-Numbers in my system that I can paint with all the colours of the wind, as is my right as an American.”

“I like the way you think.” They skirted down toward the deli counter so they could stack up their sandwiches just how they wanted. Mir grabbed sour cream Pringles in one hand and barbeque in the other, weighing them up between her hands like scales and proffering them for Luka to offer an opinion. 

The assurance that he would pop by the garage had an eye-crinkling, delighted grin splitting her mouth. It’d be great to see him around. “Well, he sounds cool enough so far that I doubt he’ll see it that way. He been helping you acclimate okay?” She let her hand briefly touch the back of Luka’s arm. It pleased her that he’d found someone to have his back, only sorry that they hadn’t run across one another any sooner. “So glad to hear business is good. We? Is that you and your friend?” She put on a brave face at the question. “Things are okay, didn’t really think I’d ever be back here, y’know? I’d love for you to meet my little niece Rey, we’re slowly figuring out her taste in video games.”

“Well, we couldn’t hinder a great artist like yourself. We’ll definitely make sure you’ll have all the art supplies needed.” Luka was grinning ear from ear, laughing at her word play. Luka followed, heading for the deli, pausing when he noticed her stop. The Pringles were eyed as he hummed softly to himself. “Is this a trick question?” His tone was playful as his eyes narrowed in a squinty accusatory way, but over dramatically. “Both?” He asked with a light laugh.

“Yeah. He’s been really helpful.” Taurus was a godsend and Luka would forever be indebted to him for all he’d done. “Yeah, I mean my friend and I. I’ll move out into my own place soon enough.” Luka was ready to be out on his own now he felt like and he figured Taurus wouldn’t mind the place to himself. 

“Thought that chapter of your life was done, in a way?” He turned to look at Mir, trying to read her facial expression. “Oh? She likes video games.” Luka’s smile grew, already knowing that he was going to like her little niece. “Should we set up a time for you two to come over? We can let her sift through my giant library of games and see if she wants to play any?”

“Sure, my place sounds good.  It is a bit messy.”  For Kai, a little messy tended to be messier than most people.  Still, he had a good vibe at his place and plus his bong was there.  “Fuck yeah I want to try out some new games.  I need something new.”

Kai chuckled, he loved food.  For a warlock, he certainly had the appetite of a werewolf.  “We can always get both.  We got all night.  You get the pizza ordered and I’ll order the Chinese.”  The warlock figured Luka had problems making decisions and although he usually allowed others to make them also, he knew if they wanted to get anything done tonight someone would have to make it.  “Do you care if I smoke or will that kill your gaming buzz?”

As they headed towards Kai’s place, they swung by the pizza place and Chinese place to grab their food before heading over to Kai’s apartment.

“Definitely. I’ll start on that now.” When it came to food Luka was like a bottomless pit. He felt confident that, between the two of them, they’d eat everything. Pulling out his phone he started ordering a large meat lover’s pizza, a side of breadsticks and two liter Sprite. Luka looked up from his phone and looked at Kai as he thought about his later question. “Not really.” He said with a shrug. “Just Crack a window?” He laughed.

“So this is your place?” He asked as he took in the apartment complex. Luka helped by carrying in the pizza. Being trapped in the car with the smell of their dinner had made him incredibly hungry. His stomach growled loudly as they approached Kai’s apartment door. “This food smells so good.” He chuckled.

“I can put the game in so it downloads and we can get our plates ready while we wait.” The wait wouldn’t be long and by the time they had their food, it be game time.

        “Going with one of the swords we used to use for rituals, before, you know…my parents passed,” Taurus explained. Fortunately, Luka had never met his parents. Taurus would have felt horribly if they had, they’d have made the new wolf suffer for being a turned wolf as opposed to a born wolf, left him on his own to keep being confused. “I don’t know why, it’s the only thing that came to my mind when she asked.”

        “Kid, I like spending time with you, you’re great. Seems like other people see it too,” and honestly that felt a bit like enough of a reason to stay. If the movement had always been because of his parents and their traditions…well, maybe it was time for some more changes, time to settle into a place the pack could call home. It would just be a matter of finding open territory. “Terrible timing on my part to say I should probably get to work though, but we’ll catch up at home later, I’ll bring dinner.”

“Sounds like it’ll come out cool.” Luka didn’t know much about Taurus’ parents, just that they ran things differently. It was none of his business, so he didn’t pry. “Your braver than me. I’m too chicken to get one.” The pain deterred him and what if he ended up not liking it at the end. “Send me a pic when it is all done.” 

“It’s all good, man.” His laptop bag was pulled closer and he fixed the strap on his shoulder. “I was going to stop at the Ranger’s station this morning.” A ten dollar bill was placed on the table for his drink, before standing up to leave. “I’ll see you at dinner.”
