This is a friendly heads up that the Oxford School of Rare Jewish Languages has opened applications for their language classes beginning in Michaelmas term (October) 2023. They offer classes in 18 Jewish languages, including Old Yiddish. Classes are on Zoom, so applicants can live anywhere in the world. The deadline to apply is September 5, 2023.
how can u take a break from judaism?
I'm gonna be honest, i don't think this was asked in good faith. Its a strange question to ask anyone of any religion. But i'll say you take a break from judaism the way you take a break from any religion, you become less observant for the duration you need to figure things out. Idk if i'll ever practice again, but thats no ones business but my own.
A YouTube video just dropped explaining the evolution of Jewish "denominations" (movements) from the Bible times until now. It's fairly American-centric once you get to modern time but still useful.

“my relationship with the state of isreal is incredibly emotionally tense for reasons both personal and political, so i regularly find myself and a loss when people ask me how i feel about it. this is especially the case when i am just out trying to have a good ole gay time and someone i do not even know bombards me with loaded questions in public.
i mean, how am i supposed to accurately describe all of my viewpoints in one short interaction? how am i supposed to condense hundreds of years of family history, not to mention thousands of years of family history, into an elevator pitch lengthened conversation that feels like a graded assignment? if you are looking for a simple answer to what you think is a simple question, you are never going to be satisfied.
i become even more at a loss when people treat the ancient symbols of my people like inherent threats. funnily enough, when someone approaces me and demands to know what my hebrew shirt or pin or whatever means and what it has to do with isreal or why i wear the “israel star” on my necklace, i am the one who feels threatened.
What will happen if i answer wring? will i get a bried “go fuck yourself” as the questioner storms away? will they try to get in my face even more? can i count on people around me to back em up? can i get myself out of the situation if it gets heated? would i be vilified if i end up having to defend myself?
at the end of the interation, no one walks away a winner. your opinion is porbably not swayed either way and my opinions on israel are probably no clearer than before. the only thing i get out of situations like this is a pit in my stomach and an odd sense of humiliation. i am not sure what you gain from it at all.
a lot, if not most, american jews have a relationship with israel similar to mine and we also tend to not be fully up to date on the going on in the holy land since, you know, whe are not israelis. maybe before accosting random jews with questions about topics often fraught with historical, personal, and familiam trauma think to yourself “do i want to be that douchebag?”

I just saw a disgusting post defending the use of the term “Asperger’s” and “Aspie” circulated by a disabled blogger I used to follow as of a minutes ago, so I’m bringing this post back.

Stop using the term “Asperger’s” or “Aspie”. I don’t care how you feel about it, and it’s extra horrible that autistic folks with lower support needs feel so superior to other autistic people that they want to distance themselves from the “others”. Just like Hans Asperger did. If I see someone use the word “Asperger’s” or “Aspie” to refer to themselves or others, I don’t care what your history with the term is, I’m gonna call you out on it. It’s not cute.

Hi! Hope you’re well. Love your post about trans masculine people and haircuts and peyot. Been growing my hair out and I would like to do something… idk. Kind of modern and inconspicuous-ish but still like. Obviously leaving the peyot for my next haircut. I feel like I need some examples and pictures for inspiration but so far haven’t been able to find any… do you have any recommendations? I’m a transsexual man fwiw (that’s the language I use for myself not trying to impose on anyone else).
So, depending on the community, peyot can vary from long and very conspicuous, to subtle.
Chabad chassidim tend to have shorter peyot than other Chassidic groups, like this:
I've also seen some Modern Orthodox people tuck their peyot short behind their ears.
The only requirement of peyot is to not cut the corners of the head and leave a little length by the ear, but they don't have to be super long if you don't want them to be.

Thinking about how in Hebrew, the Star of David is called Magen David, which means Shield of David, because of the legend that it was the symbol on King David's shield.
But who was the real shield in David's life? The one who would constantly try to protect him from King Shaul and his army, who put his life and honour on the line defending him multiple times?
Yonatan.
The Magen David is Yonatan.
Yonatan gave David his weapons when he fell in love with him, but not his shield. Why would that be? Maybe it's because Yonatan was his shield.
When David sings a surge lamenting the deaths of Shaul and Yonatan, there's a line that goes as such:
"Behold in Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, or bountiful fields; for there the shield of warriors, the shield of Shaul were rejected, no longer anointed with oil."
It's interesting that Yonatan isn't mentioned in this stanza, but Shaul is.
But upon analysis of the context....David was a poet.
He wouldn't have to mention a person by name in order to mention them.
What if the "shield of warriors" wasn't a physical shield, but Yonatan?
David and Shaul were both warriors, Yonatan never was. He gave away his weapons to David, he was skilled with the bow but the only time we see him use it is to send a coded signal to David. Yonatan was called weak by his father for his lack of aggression- he was always the defender and never the offender.
Yonatan is the shield.
Perhaps when we wear our Magen David necklaces, or embroider and carve them into our Judaica, we are wearing a symbol of Yonatan- a man who chose love over war.

Rachel and Rabbi Dr Akiva Posner were a Jewish couple with three children, living in Kiel, Germany, in the early 1930s. As part of Hanukkah celebrations, the menorah must be prominently displayed; but it can be hidden during a time of persecution. Rachel documented the moment – just over a year before Hitler took power – when the rabbi defiantly lit their menorah in the window, facing a building decked with Nazi flags.
