I’m bravely using paper that I’ve never used before for this one! It’s Watson 190g “high percentage of cotton” watercolor paper. It’s much thinner than my usual 300g Canson paper, but the texture is very nice! As for inking, I decided to use my 01 Micron pen, and the paper’s texture helped prevent the pen lines from being too thick. The paper is less pure white than I’m used to, so I had to figure out whether to keep white areas untouched like usual or to add white pen or marker on top. Since this is a paper made of cotton like Arches, I expected it to be difficult to use. I’m pleasantly surprised to see that the paint doesn’t seep into the paper and bleed like it does when I use Arches. It’s very easy to paint on. It’s also much easier to erase pencil and to blot up unwanted paint on Watson paper than it is on Arches. I’d say the ease of drawing and painting is about equal to my favorite Canson paper. The thinness of the paper did cause it to ripple a little bit, but after it dried, it was easy to flatten it out.
I was struggling to mix a vibrant enough turquoise for the details on his outfit, so I decided to use a Posca marker for those areas, since it had the bright neon effect. I was a little nervous about mixing Poscas into a watercolor painting, especially since my aqua green Posca marker is so thick, but it actually turned out really well! Once again, the many details with subtle variations of blues gave me some difficulty, but after many careful adjustments, I’m happy with it! I’d say Fubuki is getting a little easier to draw with each picture.
