In OMD, we’re presented with two potential alternate timelines – what Peter’s life would have been like if he hadn’t ever become Spider-Man – and in both, Peter’s key motivation is his rage – the only difference is that in one, it’s turned outward, and in the other, inward – and JMS highlights that it’s also incredibly self-destructive and unhealthy:

This is why interpretations of Peter that omit his rage always seem so damn OOC to me – Peter is an angry, vengeful, stubborn man. The fact that he does eventually improve in his own timeline is primarily because of the women in his life – because they push and challenge him into becoming a better man than he is. Left to his own devices…he doesn’t end well.

Dante is smart, tired of people pretending he isn’t. I think many fandoms are too stuck in the idea that goofy = dumb.

The guy runs a demon detective agency and he’s known for being very good at what he does.

Exactly! like. This man is an experienced devil hunter widely acknowledged as "legendary". He runs a successful business as a private detective, his debt to Lady and the power company is largely because he'll refuse payment from struggling clients, and he sends what money he does get to people in need like Tiki and Nesty, whom he promised to look after. Before he became a demon hunter, he was a fairly successful bounty hunter, widely acknowledged as a weapons master (he can master any weapon after using it only once, which requires serious dedication and skill), and is one of the most knowledgeable experts in demonology and the occult.

Not to mention all the puzzles he had to solve just to get through places like the Temen-ni-gru and Mallet Island.

Just because he acts goofy and witty doesn't mean he isn't intelligent.

This is not Lady. Lady wouldn't do this. Like, at any point. This is not the character from the DMC video games.

In DMC3 Lady didn't give a damn about demons. Yes, she thought that all demons were evil BECAUSE of her father. But she didn't have a bone to pick with demons in particular. She just wanted to kill her father. That's ALL she cared about. She was fueled by rage and hatred and vengeance, and she was willing to kill anyone and anything that got in the way of that.

She shot Dante in the face WITHOUT KNOWING HE WAS A DEMON. She shoots him, he SURVIVES being shot between the eyes, and then she goes "oh, guess he must be a demon then." IF DANTE WAS NOT A DEMON HE WOULD HAVE DIED FROM BEING SHOT BY HER, AND SHE WOULDN'T HAVE FUCKING CARED. She was willing to kill even humans as long as it meant getting to and killing Arkham. Yes, she thought all demons were evil, but that also didn't matter to her because she would have killed ANYBODY if they were standing inbetween her and Arkham.

If DMC3 era Lady was in this circumstance, she would either just kill all three of them without a second thought because they were standing in front of the door that Arkham was behind. Or she would have just gone 🤨 and ignored them because they were not an immediate obstacle to her goal of killing Arkham. She wouldn't be wracked with indecision and fighting her own prejudice, she was too single minded and determined in her goal of killing her father to let any of that bother her.

After the conclusion of DMC3, Lady learns that she was wrong about demons. She realizes that humans can be just as evil as any creature from hell, and that even a devil may cry if he loses a loved one. After DMC3, Lady mellows out considerably and finds a new lease on life, and is much more relaxed and even playful. And she knows that being a demon does not automatically make you evil. Lady circa DMCTAS and DMC 4 and 5 would meet this family and go "okay cool, maybe try and figure out how to glamour yourselves up better so you don't freak anybody out though." Then eat some pizza and pester Dante about all the money he owes her.

Lady would not be acting like she does in this show.

"Oh that's not fair! In the show she has a different backstory and personality, which explains why she's acting the way she does in that scene!"

God, I hate White Rabbit in the stupid show. Like... his batshit moronic plan is so fucking stupid, never mind the allegories the show is doing to how the Arabian people got bombed after 9/11. Like, what the fuck did he think opening the gates to the Demon World would do? Fundus may as well give White Rabbit a 'thanks for helping me' shoddily crafted ribbon before he lasereyed the cosplay fiend to death.

It's always so frustrating when the main villain of a story has a plan that is full of obvious holes and inconsistencies that don't make any sense, but the shows writer is a fucking moron so they aren't actually aware of that.

Like, nobody in the show is pointing out the logical nonsensicalities of the plan. Dantes only rebuttal is "NO BUT HUMANS WOULD DIE D= " bitch WHO GIVES A SHIT the reason the plan is stupid is because it legitimately doesn't solve anything and ACTIVELY UNDOES ALL OF THE AID YOU'VE BEEN PROVIDING TO REFUGEES UP UNTIL THIS POINT

These are OBVIOUS problems that ANYONE who is using their brain whatsoever would naturally pick up on and ask, but the show is so fucking stupid that it thinks the guy has a good point but is just "too extreme."

Okay yeah this is probably the only scene in this fucking show that I actually like. Seeing little shota Dante and Vergil hits me right in my weakspot okay. And if you put aside the fact that the Amulets don't look anything like they do in the games, the boys absolutely knew Sparda and he was an active and present figure in their lives, and the fact that it disgusts me to suggest that Eva would ever be the kind of parent who says "why can't you be more like your brother", I actually think this could present a decently accurate depiction of Dante and Vergil's childhoods.

Seriously why the fuck does Adi Shankar think Dante and Vergil didn't know their dad? Even people who've only played DMC5 should know that.

Loooooong rant post essay about dmc netflix incoming.

Netflix dmc was not made for dmc fans in the slightest. Netflix dmc was made for fans of max0r’s dmc5 video at the absolute most, and vivziepop fans. The tone, writing, setting, characters, everything about it is all very very off. This just straight up isn’t devil may cry.

I hate the argument of “well it’s a different universe” because at it’s core it’s missing everything that makes devil may cry what it is. The whole point of fanfiction and ESPECIALLY an adaptation is to use your understanding of the source material as the foundation and BUILD OFF OF IT. You don’t have to follow the canon beat for beat, nobody’s saying that, but the foundation should still be there. You should still be able to say “yes these are those characters” when reading/watching/playing even if they try something completely new or outlandish. Otherwise you’re just writing a random story but slapping pre-existing labels onto your ocs. That’s what separates good fics from amateur fics. That’s also why DmC garnered so much hate (on top of outright disrespecting the source material). And given that this is a professional grade adaptation and not a tween’s first attempt at a story, it’s going to be held to the former’s standards. And “different universe” or not, it’s not above critique or comparisons to the original. It’s not a standalone story, it’s an adaptation and will be treated as such. Nobody gave this much leeway to the DmC 2013 reboot despite it being pretty fun to play, so why does Netflix, so notorious for pumping out widely hated adaptations that it’s become a meme, get more leeway? Hell, Lucia is fucking WHITE. That alone should attest to the carelessness of this show. Or does “it’s a different universe” also excuse whitewashing? I get that dmc2 was ass but you can’t just do that???

It’s also disheartening to see people defending the new show with “well dmc’s story is dogshit anyways so it doesn’t matter what they do in this show.” If you don’t like the original story then that’s alright, you’re allowed to have that opinion, but that’s not a defense at all for the show nor is it an actual rebuttal towards fans of the series. (And I will state outright that if you don’t like devil may cry’s story, you’re not a fan of it. At most you’re a fan of hack and slash games and that’s okay to admit.) But people do love devil may cry, and as fans we love it’s story in spite of it’s flaws and cheesiness. You may not care because it’s meaningless to you, but there is a passionate and dedicated fanbase who adores these characters and their arcs and we are allowed to dislike new, disrespectful depictions of said characters especially when the writers don’t have a fundamental understanding of them. If Netflix au “Dante” and “Mary’s” names were changed you honestly couldn’t see any resemblance to Dante and Lady and that is a very big issue with the writing. They’re just one note imitations at best.

The whole show honestly feels like “devil may cry through the lens of someone who’s only vaguely heard of it” and not an honest to god adaptation made by someone who genuinely cares about the franchise. I’m not gonna be like “heh fans could do so much better” (disregarding the fact that there are way better fanfictions out there lol) but Adi just straight up does not care about dmc. If you took away any dmc branding you would still have the exact same show with no differences. That is not a good adaptation. (And I could write a whole post about Lady’s depiction alone, christ).

Another point- as a die-hard dante x lady shipper, even I think the vague romance was dogshit. This alone can prove any point I have about Adi misunderstanding the characters because how does someone take 20 years of built up chemistry and somehow fuck it up?? Like somehow some way he managed to make dante x lady feel forced, lacking, and annoyingly fanservicy. My brother in christ the exam was open note and you still failed.

And I know I’ll get these comments so covering this too: “Fans don’t like ANYTHING different.” Yeah no, that isn’t happening here. Now I have been involved in fandoms long enough to know that there are a lot of annoying purists out there who just don’t like anything, but that isn’t the majority of where the criticism comes from. I sure as hell am not one of those purists and have a lot of opinions that would have them putting my head on a pike lmao. (I value Dmc2 and don’t just ignore it. I love dmc4 and especially Nero. I loved the original dmc anime as a character study for dante. So on and so forth.) I can’t speak for every single critic or fan, but I know I and a lot of other fans are perfectly fine with taking Dante’s character in new directions and opening up new stories with him or the rest of the dmc world. Without new material, the old stuff gets stale and I can accept that. A lot of people went into this show open minded. But you can read my earlier points to see why I (and more) ended up hating this show. I should also add that I watched this with friends. Friends who are not huge fans of dmc like I am, but just casual observers who enjoyed some of the games and characters. They also hated this. So it’s not just die hard fans saying this shit lol.

Also the people crying out “gatekeeping.” No we ENCOURAGE everyone to play these games. We encourage everyone to actually get into the story and we want to share the things we love with others. The “gatekeepy” aspect is “if you only like the show, you’re not a dmc fan” which… yeah? That shouldn’t be a controversial take. If you aren’t a fan of the games then you aren’t a fan of the games. The show is so far completely removed from anything devil may cry that it’s basically a separate fandom. Of course you can enjoy both at the same time, you’re not fake for being a fan of both. I understand that some people are saying this and those people are lame asf lol. It’s perfectly okay to like the show even if a lot of fans don’t. You can be a dmc fan and a dmc netflix fan, but while they can coexist they are still ultimately 2 separate things. If you ONLY like the show and don’t go explore the games then you’re a dmc netflix fan.

With all that said, I encourage you to form your own opinions on the show (pirate it please for the love of god, do not give that fascist a single cent). Understand where other people are coming from but don’t let people’s thoughts dictate your opinions.

Have you read the Visions of V manga for DMC5? Not only is it so good, it gives you an interesting glimpse of Vergil's character through V. With that in mind, I have a question stemming from his appearance in the Netflix show.

How is it that he's able to change from Nelo Angelo into his own self at will in the show? In the manga, it's pretty much made clear that Mundus literally brainwashed him into that demon knight after Vergil got absolutely defeated by him. It was only after Dante defeated him back in DMC1 that he was able to return to his original self, though very weakened and on the verge of dying.

I'm not familiar with the extra material of DMC. I'll have to ask @spinningbuster98, @randomthefox and @aquillis-main for help :P

Anyway, from the fandom outrage I've seen, everyone is confused as to why in the world Vergil would willingly be Mundus' lapdog. From what I know, there's a lot of inspiration from the prequels of DMC1 and 3, but in the former, Vergil was said to have been brainwashed to become Mundus' servant, because otherwise no way in hell he would team up with the indirect responsible for the death of his mother.

DMC3 ends with Vergil facing off against Mundus in the Underworld because "if my father did it, I should be able to do it too."

The overt implication is that Vergil loses because he was already weak from his last fight with Dante and because he didn't truly have Sparda's powers, and he gets brainwashed into becoming Nelo Angelo. The scene after the first Nelo Angelo fight where he sees Dante's amulet and has a breakdown makes it very clear that he is in a state of being brainwashed and NOT that he is willingly on Mundus's side. To say nothing of how he looks with the helmet off.

DMC5 unambiguously states that being Nelo Angelo was a nightmare where he was still able to think, implying Vergil was trapped in his own body in a I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream sort of situation.

The idea that Vergil would WILLINGLY work for Mundus is absolutely absurd. Vergil's ONLY defining motivation is that he wants to get stronger and more powerful so that he will never be a victim like he was as a child when Mundus's demons attacked his home and killed his mother. Vergil isn't a fucking sith lord who follows the rule of 2 and thinks "oh I'll work for Mundus and get more powerful and then overthrow him." Vergil would see subservience to ANYBODY OR ANYTHING as admitting his own weakness. His motivation for (his understanding of) demonic power means he would never willingly accept being someone else's minion, even if you don't factor in any sort of resentment against Mundus for killing his mother.

Shankar literally didn't even play the fucking games. That's really the only explanation.

The game concludes with Dante in his DMC1 outfit, taking up the position he was in right when we found him at the beginning of the original game. Everything has come full circle.

What an amazing prequel. It does everything that it should have done, it revitalized the Devil May Cry franchise name and turned it into a legend among the action game genre. It respected everything that the original game innovated and established, while also striking out to forge its own identity. Devil May Cry as a series is the child of two fathers, Hideki Kamiya and Hideaki Itsuno. In many ways it feels like the original game was the clay harvested from the earth, and DMC3 is the end result after that clay was molded into a breathtaking and unique piece of art. I will always love and respect the original game for breaking the mold, but DMC3 is a masterpiece that truly allowed this intellectual property to flourish to its full potential.

when people ask you what the best action game of all time is, you can answer them with:

Netflix DMC expects us to treat demons as an ethnic minority, but the sympathetic refugee demons look almost completely human (save for a few horns) while the more bloodthirsty demons like echidna are far more monstrous looking.

So basically the sympathetic refugee demons are the DMC equivalent of being extremely lightskinned, while the malevolent demons are dark skinned by the same standard.

Uh-oh. Colorism a-go-go

It's so fucking stupid and annoying because "good" demons ALREADY WERE A THING IN THE VIDEO GAME CONTINUITY. Sparda was a demon and he woke up to justice. Trish was a demon and she turned away from Mundus and joined up with Dante. Lucia was an artificial demon created by a human who has given up his humanity, and she was willing to let Dante kill her just because she was worried she MIGHT become a threat to the people she cared about due to being a demon.

The DMC Animated series, which is in continuity with the video games Patty and Morrison even appear in DMC5, also has demons they encounter who are explicitly depicted as being decent people who Dante has no quarrel with. Bradley is a demon who is framed for murders, but he's innocent and in love with a human woman and Dante encourages him to live as a human in peace.

Modeus and Baul are former apprentices of Sparda and are good decent guys, Baul is an honorable warrior and Modeus is even a pacifist.

People arguing that the show is stupid because "demons are evil, why is the show trying to portray them sympathetically?" are so fucking annoying because they're poisoning the well. The DMC series has ALWAYS had demons who aren't bad people. THE OPENING FUCKING LINE OF THE FIRST FUCKING GAME IS ABOUT SPARDA WAKING UP TO JUSTICE AND FIGHTING HIS OWN KIND AGAINST HUMANITY. And no, this was not special because "he was fighting against his own nature as a demon." ANY DEMON would be capable of doing the same thing. And the series since the second game has had humans who are the villains and do bad things.

But humanity/demonity as a biological attribute, and Being Human and Being A Devil as a metaphysical concept, have also always been shown to be two completely different things. Humans can become demons. Demons can find humanity. It is the ability to love and self sacrifice in the name of love that makes the difference. If you have loved ones and would cry if you lost those loved ones, then you are human. Regardless of if you come from the Underworld and have lava for blood or whatever. If you are willing to sacrifice anybody even those who love you in the name of power for yourself, then you are a demon regardless of the fact that you were born of a human womb and bleed red.

This isn't fucking rocket science. What's in your heart and what's flowing through your veins are two different things.

The Netflix shows insinuation that there are "innocent demons" who have children and just want to be left in peace is fucking stupid because BY DEFINITION they would NOT be demons.

If this show was functioning under the rules of the video games, these people are Humans. Their love makes them humans. The horns are irrelevant to that fact.

The Netflix show is STUPIDER AND MORE SIMPLISTIC with its "not all demons are bad" message. The video games are SMARTER AND MORE NUANCED by presenting Humanity as an ephemeral trait that ANY BEING is capable of having.

Fucking piece of shit fucking TV show.

Also yeah in terms of problematic "light skin = good" messaging let's not forget what they did to Lucia.
