Thank you so much, Anon <3 I honestly didnât think the post would be so well received, but Iâm happy people seemed to like it :D I thought about some more details about it from Yamaguchiâs mother, Kanami ;)Â
Yamaguchi Kanami doesnât get surprised anymore when Tadashi stubbles in to their home. Clothes stained in dirt and crumpled, ripped in some places, tears streaks running down his cheeks. She tries so hard to talk to the school, to get in contact with the parents of Tadashiâs bullies, but they wont do anything. And she tries so hard, so hard, to be there for Tadashi. But between her two jobs; there is little time to tend to Tadashi.
Tadashi has always been an easy kid to deal with. Maybe too easy to deal with. He doesnât get upset when he has to have pre-packed dinner bentos or instant noodles for dinner alone. He doesnât complain when he needs to get ready for bed alone and sometimes even falls asleep before Kanami comes home. He doesnât throw a fit when Kanami explained that some things are just too expensive for her to buy and Tadashi canât have the new toy everyone else in his class already has. But Tadashi isnât happy, she can see it.Â
He spends his days at home. First doing home work, then maybe watching a tittle bit of tv. Sometimes he plays at nearby park that belongs to the neighbourhood, alone. He often likes to play with his pokemon cards and figures, but she can see that Tadashi getâs tired of playing all by himself.Â
One night, when she is cleaning up the kitchen, she notice that his dinner bento is still in the fridge. Kanami calls for Tadashi and asks why he didnât eat dinner. Is he sick, have something happened in school today? Worry grows in the pit of her stomach. However, she is surprised when Tadashi tells her that he ate dinner with his new friend; Tsukishima Kei, from class two. We became friends last week!
He tells him that Kei invited him home to himself for dinner and Tadashi didnât tell her since he thought it was okay since he would be eating alone anyway. Tadashi smiled brightly and told her that his new friend, Kei-kun, is really cool and is really tall and is really good in volleyball too. Tadashi just joined and Kanami thinks she can dig out some money to buy him fresh, new volleyball sneakers, so he doesnât have to use the shoes provided from the school.Â
It was like it changed over night. Tadashi doesnât come home with wrinkled and tore up clothes. He doesnât cry anymore over the boys in his class that tease him and push him around. In fact, he barley mentions them anymore.
She almost jumps out of her skin when Tadashi brings back a tall, kid with blond curls and big square glasses. Tadashi didnât tell her that he would bring a a dinner guest. He proudly present his friends as Kei-kun and the taller boy bows politely and greets her. He had a small blush over his cheeks and twiddled with his fingers.Â
Tadashi never brought people over.Â
Kanami beams at them and Tadashi cheerily drags Kei to his bedroom while they talk about something or the other. She makes a bigger dinner than usual and all three of them talks happily over the meal, she even gives them an ice lolly. âeven when itâs a week day?â Tadashi had asked, mouth forming a small âoâ as he took off the plastic wrapper. Kei was already digging into his strawberry flavoured lolly.Â
After that, Tadashi gets invited to Keiâs place when Kanami has the late night shifts. Tsukishimaâs mother had no problem with having Tadashi over for dinner a few times a week. Kanami canât thank her enough, she gives the Tsukishima family treats she made herself as a thanks- Often sweet buns and such for the Tsukishimaâs boys. Tadashi doesnât have to spend dinner alone with pre-packed microwaved food. She also starts keeping fresh strawberries in the fridge for Kei, because Tadashi slipped that âKei-kun loves strawberries. He could eat a whole field, Ka-chan!â
They have their first sleepover when Kei is turning eight. She walked a happy and excited Tadashi over to their place, a backpack securely resting over his shoulders. He had been jittery all day, couldnât even sit still when he ate his lunch.Â
When he came home the day after, he was tired. Apparently, Kei and Tadashi was up way past their regular night time. But Tadashi talked to lively about the strawberry cake they ate, that they played Mario Kart with his older brother and that they stayed up reading through Keiâs mangas and played with his dinosaurs figures.
Almost two months later, Tadashi comes into the kitchen where she is washing up from their dinner. He tugs on her apron and shift slightly from foot to foot. A nervous manner he picked up years ago. Probably from her.Â
âUm, Ka-chan, can Kei-kun sleep over here at my birthday this weekend?â
She smiles at him and crouches down to his level. âOf course, Dashi-chan.â She gives his hair a ruffle and blows raspberries on his cheek and Tadashi squirms in delight. Saying that he is too old to be babied like that, Ka-chan!
She almost have tears in her eyes when Tadashi beams up at her. Happy and joyful. How long had it been since he smiled like that? She doesnât know, but she be damned if Tadashi doesnât continue smiling like that.Â
