well, youre not one hundred percent if he does, but the way his hand seems to linger against yours, youre pretty sure he wants to hold it.

the night is pretty, maybe even prettier than usual; there were stars adorning the sky everywhere around you and the soft breeze made you feel at ease. you briefly wonder if its the wind or him doing it.

you want to hold his hand. you want to, so badly, but you promised him you would wait.

you would wait until he wasnt so uncomfortable with the idea. you would wait until he would initiate it. you would wait until he wouldnt flinch at your touch, even if it did kind of hurt, pain flashing in your eyes and his getting filled with guilt and panic.

“im sorry, im so sorry, its not your fault,” he would mumble in a hurry and you would tell him its alright.

“we have all the time in the world to wait,” you would tell him.

the night surely is beautiful; with fireflies here and there, and flowers everywhere around you, its beautiful. you dont dare to move your hand, waiting for him to do something.

and he does. you smile to yourself and pretend you dont notice the way hes nervously looking at your hands. you wrap your finger against his, as a reassurance.

you would wait. and so for now, linking your pinkies would be enough.

Aight, so I've seen a lot of headcannon that are like "Xiao doesn't know how affection works" or "Xiao doesn't know how to express his love," but-

(ignore the phone notification lol)

In game, Xiao was very clingy with the Traveler. Like, they were safe at this point. He did not need to keep holding on to them, but here he is keeping his arm around their waist and readjusting to get a tighter grip on their hand. Also-

I read somewhere that this gift was supposed to symbolize his desire to be with the traveler for eternity or something like that. Sadly, I don't have the source nor am I really familiar enough with Chinese mythology to back up this claim, so if anyone would like to add on here, that would be very much appreciated.

Ok, so final piece of evidence before I go into my actual headcannon- Xiao is an inherently gentle person who has gone through a lot of shit and actively tries to suppress that side of himself, but that gentleness sometimes cones out in little ways. The game developers visually depict this with both the two things above + that one idle animation where he's reaching out for the little spirit thingy.

So, actual headcannon:

Once Xiao has actually accepted someone into his life (friend or partner), he is very clingy

He's bad with words and knows he comes across as harsh, so instead of worrying about that, he just goes straight to physical affection

I also feel like he doesn't have the best understanding of what boundaries are

Like, lap open? It's free real estate and he's gonna lie on it. Hand free? Well someone's gotta hold it, so it might as well be him. Back exposed? Well now you're just leaving yourself wide open to attacks. No need to worry though, he's got you- yes, hugging you from behind is absolutely necessary and you should stop questioning his methods

Hot take I guess, but I don't think Xiao would actually be that protective.

Like, the lad isn't going to date or befriend someone unless he 100% trusts them

This extends to dealing with both humans and monsters

Xiao trusts that you'll call on him if you really need help

Also, Xiao is bad at reading people in general, so you're gonna have to be very clear and concise when communicating how you feel to him

Back to the more fluffy stuff- Xiao is kinda like a crow and will bring you back shiny stuff or just stuff that reminds him of you

He's also still trying to figure out Zhongli's retirement and interest in simple objects and is low-key hoping you'll be able to explain it to him
