Final reflection statement

Through this first semester studies, we learnt the basis of some unique communication methods and the skill of making the magazine in the real life. More importantly, it really encouraged me to explore and rethink about some objects we ignored day-to-day. Besides, we spent a couple weeks to play with the alphabet and attempted various and comprehensive materials or methods,which inspired me to seek the typography combinations in NGV in order to complete the first project. In the second project, it was a really ideal opportunity for me to practice how to communicate and interview artists. I hope that in the next semester I can discover more concepts or ideas such as publication design and gesamtkunstwerk.

Finally finish printing!

I spent more than three hours today in the printing shop. There were so many people(seems like most of them were printing zines too). When I finished the first time of printing I found there is one page with wrong page number！Than I waited a long long time to print this page again. Shame of me. I think that’s because I put a wrong pdf on. The folder is quite a mess after so many times of modification. I should make a list of what to check beforeo printing I think.

What is lucky this day is I found a satisfying kind of paper to print. I had tried to print the zine before but the paper is too thin actually. I am satisfied with the thick matte paper today and the nature texture it has is nice.

About the magazine

Finally I finished it and printed it out with the 300 gsm uncounted paper ! In my zine I will focus on a graphic designer who works in Tomshi associates. Her name is Camelia Leung and she was born in Guangzhou, China. Initially I was attracted by her ingenious works in a graphic design exhibition in Guangzhou. She really enjoys the design process and has massive passion on expressing her perspectives with various materials and communication methods. Recently she was inspired by the Chinese folk culture and absorbed some iconic elements for creating a set of Chinese red packets. Therefore in this zine I will focus on the traditional culture theme and how does Camelia redesign and reinterpret it. In addition, Camelia thought that she had a pocket in her world in order to collect the inspirations, then I attempted to make a real pocket to express that visually.

In today’s class, we started to combine our images with texts in the template and print them out. However,when I attempted to fold the paper, I found that some of the pages were printed in the wrong position. Initially I thought that maybe I put the image mistakenly. When I checked all the template,which were all matched with the page number, I started to think that maybe the printing direction was different with the template. Because the response I had received was quite long, I supposed that the 16pages magazine was appropriate. Andy showed me how to make a 16pages ,A5 magezine, which had a completely different format . I still needed lots of works to do😭

In today’s class, Andy taught us how to make a 8pages and 16pages magazine with a A3 paper. It was really helpful for us to understand what direction should we put the image into the template by folded the paper. At this stage I haven’t received responses from designer who I already sent the question. In spite of this embarrassing condition which gave me some negative impacts , I started to design my layout and cover page. I attempted to compose disparate layouts as many as I could in order to ensure there were alternatively. According to their designs style, which are commercial and modernized, I suppose that the ingenious and simplified style is more suitable for them.

In today’s class, we received a task that created varying latter forms with the copy of magazines. Seems that there are so many interesting methods to have fun with the alphabet. Similar but different with the class on last week, we were not just sought for the subsistent letter forms in the campus. We supposed to create shapes whatever we like. The human figures were ideally to compose latter forms which can visualize a intence communication. Besides, one image could be recognized different letter forms(p2,p3). I coincidentally selected a same image with someone who created an ‘A’ .(mine was ‘Q’). That’s the engaging part of this task— you can conspicuously find that the diversity of human thoughts. After that, we came back to our project and started to learn the basic knowledge about the making process of magazines.

In today’s class,we were asked to keep playing and having fun with the alphabet. We needed to find letters and numbers in school. Apparently, the structure of architecture attracted my attention rapidly, which can create diverse size of ‘W’, ‘M’, ‘N’, ‘F’, ‘E’ . Numbers were more challenging to find, particularly like 2,4,5. After that we continued to focus on our project. I already sent a email which included 5 questions to one of my favorite visual communication designers. Hope that I can receive her response soon😊

Here are some of the letters from my question poster(can a good drawer be a good designer?) With consideration of the connection between the topic of my question and arts, I spent a afternoon in NGV to find letters that I needed in the oil painting or photography works.

In today’s class, we were received some cards with different color and shape and needed to use them to create the alphabet. Because of the color (yellow,black,orange),we gave our font a name called “pikachu”. Explored the combination which crated by papers with different shape.

In today’s class, we were received a task that used different methods to present a sentence(Fix problem quickly with galvanized jets). The first one we used a violet paper roll and pins to create a ingenious typeface, which inspired me to attempt and explore various method and material, like the second one. We used brush to dip the water and write our sentence in something’s surface. Initially we selected the rock, however, we must wrote as quickly as possible because the water evaporated very quickly and disappeared when we just wrote a few words. Therefore we decided to work together to ensure we already take a photo before it disappeared.

In today’s class, we were asked to create our selfies with the clay, which was a really good material for us to devise inspirations visually. Initially we needed to use a kind of object which had a particular texture on the surface to create a question with clay and take it to another classroom to receive a response, which was a good opportunity to familiar with each other and share thoughts. We always used to send messages in social media and gradually forgot some primary communication methods. After that , we hung out our selfies and found that some people had a quite unique understanding about their appearance.

Today was the first class in this semester, I was so excited and a little bit nervous because I didn’t know anyone in class and unfamiliar with the content of the class. Then we were asked to take our stuffs out and compose the alphabet, which was a appropriate opportunity for us to know each other through term work. Andy suggested that we can attempted to create the letter with a integrated object, which let me rethought about the object that we ignored day-to-day. This process encouraged me to look around the object we used everyday to find inspirations. Overall, it was a wonderful beginning for us and I started to look forward to the next week!
