Waking up in the mornings was never easy for her. No matter how many alarms she set, she either slept through them or favored the snooze button. It wasn't really something she did on purpose, considering sleep didn't really come easy. Even though the dust had settled from battles past, the nightmares would still come up from time to time. So the fact that she was sleeping so soundly without disruption was...a little suspicious.
The soft light of the sunrise spilled in through the window, illuminating the room with a warm golden glow. Her eyes fluttered opened slowly, adjusting to the brightness, as she sat herself up, taking in a deep breath of the crisp morning air.
"When did I get here...?" She said to herself, rubbing the sleep from her eyes before glancing down at the bed.
Nestled next to her was Cloud, sound asleep. She shifted slightly, careful not to disturb him, and smiled.
"I'm going to assume it was you," she said softly.
His hair was spread out across the pillow, somehow making his normal spiky style even messier. She reached out slowly, her fingers brushing a stray lock of hair away from his forehead. She watched him as he slept, his breathing slow and steady, face displaying a calm and peaceful expression. Tifa’s heart softened as she took in the sight, appreciating the rare sight of Cloud's vulnerability.
Carefully, she leaned in closer, her heart skipping a beat as a mix of affection and admiration filled her. Tifa pressed her lips to his forehead, the kiss soft and tender, before reluctantly pulling away.
"Thank you," she whispered, stealing one last glance at Cloud's resting face.
Without warning, a muscled arm found it's way around her waist as Cloud suddenly sat up and pulled her into his lap and embraced her.
"You're welcome," he said, his morning voice a husky melody to her ears. "Though, you prob'ly shouldn't sleep on the couch."
"You were awake?" She asked in surprise.
"Light sleeper, remember? SOLDIER thing."
"Right," she giggled, resting her head against his shoulder, the warmth of his body enveloping her. "I didn't fall asleep there on purpose, you know. I was waiting for you."
"I know."
Cloud wrapped his arms around her, giving her back a gentle rub and placing a chaste kiss against her collarbone before fiddling with a lock of her hair.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"Nothing. I just....I miss your dolphin tail," he replied, tying off a red ribbon at the end of her hair. "You haven't worn your hair this way in a while."
She giggled against him, a small smile breaking upon her face as she lightly squeezed him in her arms.
"That so?" She teased, nuzzling herself closer. “I guess I got a bit lazy with it. Things have been busy.”
Cloud chuckled, his fingers continuing to lightly stroke her back. “I get it."
Moments passed as they stayed in each others embrace, a comfortable silence enveloping the room. It wasn't long before Tifa found the peace lulling her back to sleep, but was soon interrupted by the unmistakable sound of her stomach growling. Her face flushed with embarrassment as she realized how loud it had been, especially in the quiet of the morning.
"Hungry?" Cloud asked, a tone of amusement in his voice.
"Maybe...a little." She muttered.
"How about a breakfast date, then?"
She pulled away slightly, her cheeks still a slight shade of pink.
"I'd like that," she said with a nod and a smile.
She made her way towards the edge of the bed and stood, her arms above her head in a deep stretch as she began walking towards the bathroom.
"A breakfast date, huh?" She said to herself, pulling her hair over her shoulder to admire Cloud's handiwork. "Guess I better give it my all!"
And maybe, just maybe, she'd keep doing this hairstyle.
It was one thing for him to not answer his phone, but if she wasn't answering, there was trouble. Major trouble.
Today was a rather rough day for his deliveries, and a few complications had put him several hours behind. He knew if he didn't call home to let Tifa know he would be late, she would worry. So he picked up his phone, dialed her number, and sighed as he let the phone ring.
And ring. And ring. And ring.
After the 8th time of hearing the tone, Cloud hung up and stared at his phone screen, an eyebrow raised in confusion.
"Maybe she's busy with the bar..." He said to himself, glancing at the time. "No, the bar closed two hours ago, so what the hell...?"
He tapped on his screen, pulled open his call log, and selected her name again. A breath hitched in his throat as he listened to the dial tone. Six, seven, eight, nine times it rang, and still, no answer.
"Something isn't right," Cloud said, a mild sense of dread creeping through his bones. He quickly glanced at his list of deliveries. There were still four more to do, all of which were a good distance away.
"These will have to wait." He said, putting his phone in his pocket and climbing onto his motorcycle. He revved the engine and took off, tires squealing as he sped away. The deliveries were no longer of any importance to him. If something had happened to Tifa and the kids while he was away, he would never forgive himself for it.
Within twenty minutes, he was in front of their house, and within seconds, he was at the front door. He opened the door frantically, his heart pounding in his chest and was met with silence.
"Tifa?!" He called, panic settling in. "Where is she...."
Taking a quick glance around, he noticed a soft amber glow coming from a room down the hall. Cloud hurried towards the room, his footsteps echoing with each step he took, until he reached the doorway and slowly looked inside.
There, amongst the glow of the living room lamp, lay Tifa, sleeping peacefully on the cushions of the couch.
"There you are," he said softly, relief washing over him. He quietly stepped into the room, taking care not to disturb her. Approaching the couch with a soft smile, he couldnt help but notice the peaceful expression on Tifa's face.
Kneeling down on the floor beside her, he reached out, his fingers trembling slightly as he gently brushed a stray strand of hair away from her face. For a moment, he stared, committing the details of her sleeping face to memory. The steady rhythm of her breathing helping to calm his own anxious heart.
Rising to his feet, he gently scooped Tifa up into his arms, cradling her close to his chest. Her head nestled against his shoulder and her soft breaths warmed his neck as he held her. He moved through the living room, careful not to wake her, and made his way towards their bedroom.
Upon entering the bedroom, he lowered her down on the bed and tucked her in. He sat down beside her, reaching forward to softly caress her cheek. Lingering for only a moment, he smiled and let out sigh of relief before making his way to the other side of the bed. He slipped under the covers beside her, careful not to disturb her too much as he settled in. Pulling her closer to him, he felt the warmth of her presence seep into his soul and found peace knowing she was safe.
And he would do anything to make sure it stayed that way.
Tifa never asked for much, so when she asked to close the bar early, he didn't argue. In fact, he was grateful, for today had been unusually busy and neither one of them really had a moments rest. So when she looked at him with those puppy-dog eyes and asked to call it a day, refusal wasn't an option.
He took a seat on a nearby stool, his legs aching and back sore, while Tifa wiped down the bar, cleaned two glasses, and poured them both a drink.
"Good work today, Cloud." Tifa said, sliding his glass down the wooden table top.
"You too," he replied, catching the glass in his hand. "Though, are you sure you should have a drink? You had a lot of people buy you one tonight."
"Hm? Oh, yeah, it's fine. One more for me and we're good!" She said with a smile.
He watched as she raised her glass to her lips, the amber liquid sliding down her throat, her cheeks flushed a soft pink. It didn't take him long to notice she was already slightly tipsy, considering her movements around the bar this evening were a little less than graceful. So this one more drink, he knew, would have her...more than good.
She sat the glass down and stared at him, a small hum escaping her throat, before she slowly walked around the bar to stand in front of him.
"What is it?" He asked.
"You know," she said, reaching to run her fingers through his hair. "Back then...your hair was more spiky!"
"..."
Tifa let out a small giggle. "Even your hair is losing it's hard edge!"
"Maybe. Or...maybe I just didn't want to be compared to a chocobo anymore." He said, mild embarrassment showing on his face.
"What?! Noooo, you liked it when I told you that your hair looked like a chocobo, didn't you?" She teased, ruffling his hair gently.
"I...wouldn't say I liked it," he muttered.
"Chocobos are cute, Cloud!" She said, poking the tip of his nose with her finger. "Just...like...you!"
"....how much did she drink?" He thought to himself as he brought his eyes up to meet hers.
Tifa chuckled softly before lacing her fingers around his neck, lowering her face to rest her forehead against his.
"You are though," she whispered. "To me you're...more than that. You're the brightest star in the night sky. The most beautiful person I have the pleasure of holding in my heart."
Cloud's breath hitched in his throat at her words, a comfortable warmth forming in his chest. She had told him she loved him in many different ways, but this...this was different. This was deeper. And it took everything he had not to pull her close and kiss her.
Without warning, Cloud rose to his feet. With one arm around her back, the other under her legs, he lifted Tifa from the ground and walked towards the door.
"You, Miss Lockhart, need some food and some rest." He said to her with a tender smile. "It's not like you to lose yourself to some booze."
Tifa chuckled, placing a chaste kiss on his collarbone before burying her face in his neck.
And as he carried her back to their home, he thought that tonight, he'll hold her a little closer.
