Virtues of Muharram and fasting on the day of Ashura
Allah’s sacred month of Muharram is a blessed and important month. It is the first month of the Hijri calendar and is one of the four sacred months
The 10th day of month of Muharram is called Ashurah and fasting on that day and the day before or after is very valuable.
Let me provide you some ahadith about this day insha'Allah:
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘The best of fasting after Ramadhan is fasting Allah’s month of Muharram.’ ”
(Muslim, 1982)
Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashura’. He said, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘This is a righteous day, it is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Musa fasted on this day.’ He said, ‘We have more right to Musa than you,’ so he fasted on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day.”
(Bukhari, 1865)
Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said:
“I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of 'Ashura’, and this month, meaning Ramadhan.”
(Bukhari, 1867)
It is Mustahabb (Encouraged) to Fast Tasu'a’ with 'Ashura’
'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fasted on 'Ashura’ and commanded the Muslims to fast as well, they said, 'O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'If I live to see the next year, in sha Allah, we will fast on the ninth day too.’ But it so happened that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away before the next year came.”
(Muslim, 1916)
Some scholars recommend fasting on the 9th of Muharram as well to be on the safe side or to be different from the Jews and Christians.
So when is the day of Ashurah?
Day before Ashura
9th Muharram - September 8 th 2019
Ashura
10th Muharram - September 9 th 2019
Day After Ashura
11th Muharram - September 10 th 2019
Please keep in mind that it is not obligatory to fast on these days but very very valuable sunnah!
A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Quraish used to fast on the day of 'Ashura in the pre-Islamic days and the Messenger ot Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) also observed it. When he migrated to Medina, he himself observed this fast and commanded (others) to observe it. But when fasting during the month of Ramadan was made obligatory he said: He who wishes to observe this fast may do so, and he who wishes to abandon it may do so.
(Muslim 2499)
Umm Salamah reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, teach me a supplication with which I can pray for myself.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Say: O Allah, forgive my sins, remove the anger in my heart, and protect me from the trials of misguidance.”

Once your main focus in life becomes working on becoming a better person for the sake of Allah, negative people and their opinions won’t matter to you. Strive to be a better person every day and Allah will make your life so content.
Qualities of a Great Person
1. They are someone who demonstrates integrity – A person is said to have integrity if what they say and what they do are rooted in the same set of core values.
2. They don’t speak badly of others – If you speak badly about others to a friend, the chances are you’ll also speak badly about them. Hence, they are likely to be hesitant in what they share with you.
3. They are positive and optimistic – This doesn’t mean burying your head in the sand. It means choosing not to dwell on the negatives, and to actively looking for the positives.
4. They make the effort to be helpful – Life is so much lighter if you’re thoughtful and kind – and we rarely forget someone who’s caring and warm.
5. They set goals and have ambition - This is an extremely contagious quality. Not only will you achieve higher goals for yourself, you’ll give hope to others, and inspire them to try.
6. They are understanding and compassionate – All of us face battles and experience hard times. Empathising with others when life is tough helps to ease their burden and renew their inner spark.
7. They believe in, love and respect themselves - If you don’t accept, respect and love yourself, then you’ll send out vibes that you’re inadequate. However, if you love, believe in and treat yourself well, then it’s likely that others will treat you that way, too.
8. They have persistence – Although ambition is important, it is not enough. You have to persevere if you’re going to succeed. So when you stumble or fall down just get up and start again. Then keep on going till you finally succeed.
9. They are open-minded and willing to learn - If you’re closed in your thinking and set in your ways then you’ll never discover a different, better way .. and you’ll close yourself off to other possibilities.
10. They take responsibility for their own life - Blaming others for your problems, or acting like a victim won’t help you to move forwards, and have the life you want. Take control of your future. Success is up to you.
Al-masjid an-Nabawī
Don’t feel shy about showing your weaknesses to Allah, because He will help you turn them into strengths.
Key Elements in Self Respect and Self Care
1. Be aware of and respect your limits.
2. Don’t let others rule your life and calendar.
3. Take time out, and embrace solitude.
4. Listen to your heart, and do what’s best for you.
5. Accept that you’re not perfect – for we all mess up at times.
6. Make time for fun.
7. Treat yourself as valuable.
4 things you can not recover in life:
• Words after they’re said.
• Moments after they’re missed.
• Actions after they’re done.
• Time after it’s gone.
Choose to be careful of what you say, what you do, and what you let pass by...You may not get a second chance...
“Turkish brothers protect their sisters and wives during Hajj. The power of a society is reflected in how much the men value, protect and care for their women.”
When Allah loves you, He places the love of you in the hearts of the people whose love is worth having.
Today I said the shahada and welcomed Islam into my life. Alhamdulillah I am ready for this new relationship with God 💖
