He lets out a sigh once Derek’s tone changes. Once upon a time they had been friends, back when they all lived in New York and their wives made them have dinner parties. Derek was the first person John invited for a Knicks game. they had an understanding few people had, that until John took a job offer in London. “I didn’t ask her to come. She stopped working for me seven months ago. But I can’t just… I’m not going to fire her just because I was stupid enough to have an affair with her. It wouldn’t be fair to her.” But was it for Nancy? Derek’s words echo in his head and he dares asking. “Did she talk to you?” John wanted to know if Nancy had indicated leaving him because the secretary was back in their lives.

“listen,” he was the first one to get it. when addison showed up in seattle, his first thought was to get her sent home. but that would’ve been wrong. just because he messed up, getting her fired was the last thing that would’ve made it right. “i get it. do you think i wanted addison to be here when she first showed up? no. but getting her fired or “ he paused because his words wouldn’t make sense. when johnny asked his question, derek let out a sigh and a quick shake of his head. “she doesnt talk to me,” the last time he had a conversation with nancy was when johnny had first got to town. “sorry.”

“I have Sofia all weekend, I’ll come over Saturday morning. It might be better for Zola, she’s still get adjusted right?” His grin was obvious to show his excitement. Ever since they had wondered about starting families of their own - mostly Derek back in the day - they had dreamt of having their kids growing up as best friends, family to each other just like they had. Mark was happy it was all becoming a real dream as of right now. “Can you believe it? Both of us, dads at the same time, two little girls.”

“adjusted? did you make that up or did Robbins tell you that?” mark was a great dad. it was obvious when you looked at him. even when he wasn’t with sofia, watching him talk about her was all the proof you needed. “we’re pretty lucky guys all of a sudden, arent we?” weird. mcsteamy & mcdreamy rarely came out on top these days.

“Dr. Shepherd.” She says with an extended hand. “Dr. Hayes. You paged for a consult?” She was straight out of surgery and had come down to the neurosurgery floor to meet with Derek Shepherd. Tilting her head, she eyes him up and adds with a smirk. “I’ll give it to them, I kind of get the McDreamy thing.”

“right - “ time to change the subject. “nice to meet you, dr. hayes.” derek turned to the scans in front of him, finger pointing to a tumor that was sitting directly on the patients spine. “we’ve got a tumor we want to remove, but it’s cause so urological damage.” derek wanted her input or just a yes on scrubbing in with him on the removal.

all she could do was nod. it took everything in her power not to break down, seeing the disappointment clear as day on her brother’s face. it would be easy so saw that she could just suck it up and try, get sober and see her niece. but she wouldn’t be doing it for the right reasons. “i’m sorry. i know what you must think, how can i choose drugs over meeting my niece right?” she whispers, eyes averting his gaze.

“if you cared about what i thought, we’d be past that already.” it was true. did she want to hear him say it? derek was disappointed in his youngest sister. it was a brotherly loving sort of disappointed because he had no idea how to fix it. maybe it wasn’t his job to fix it, like he had always thought. if that was true, derek had no idea what would get him to actually walk away.

Cheating seemed a recurring theme and yet he was the big bad guy who was lying about trying to win his wife back and bringing the mistress as backup. Bullshit. “I didn’t bring her, the firm did. Even if I was, it was none of goddamn business. She is the best assistant across England and America, do I need to keep going?” Rolling his eyes, he lets a deep sigh out. “Again, none of your goddamn business. I don’t need to show the entire Shepherd clan I am working things out with your sister. She wants to tell you, good for you. If she doesn’t, too bad. We certainly aren’t friends and I don’t need to prove you a single thing.”

they had been friends at some point, so derek thought. “listen,” he began. “if i was you, i would have told her to go back to new york. not because she’s a bad person - “ from what he had overheard, she wasnt. “but for nancy’s sake. if you dont want my opinion, then fine.” with the way that johnny was reaction, it was obvious that she was more than an assistant. if the three years of infidelity hadn’t given it away, but whoever she was? she was obviously important to him. but his sister never spoke to him about her family issues, so for all he knew? she could be fine with it. derek was over meddling in peoples - especially his families, business.
