I ended up having a really interesting conversation with some people at the bus stop today. They were getting out of some sort of ‘clean and sober’ meeting and had starting saying how they were so bored because they didn’t have anything to do, and had to stay at home because all their old friends would pull them back. So I said something like, ‘So this is the time to do all the stuff your parents told you they didn’t have money/time for!’ “Whatcha mean?” “You know, like when you were five and you REALLY wanted to have that toy or do that thing and you were like, ‘Please mom please I gotta have this I gotta go do this’ and they went ‘Hell no you think I’m paying for that do you want to goddamn EAT?’ “ And this light went on in their eyes. The lady is going to go check thrift stores for an Easybake Oven and I told her about Wilton cake decorating classes. The dude is going to Griffith Park and ride horses, because, ‘I always wanted to be a cowboy, and you can’t drink when you’re on a horse ‘cause you’ll fucking die!’ Fuck it. This is what being an adult is. Sure it’s bills and work and relationships, but damn it, it’s also time to do the things you LIKE. I signed up for a free class/lecture on Water Gardens. I’m going. it doesn’t even have to be the trauma of bad parents. It can be the everyday human pain of “I lost my favorite toy when I was 12 and never found it again.” It can be the parents who loved you and fully sympathized with your desire to have the thing, but honey, we just don’t have the money right now. It can be the fact that you no longer live with your brother who’s highly allergic to dogs, so you can finally have the dog you always wanted that you always understood why you couldn’t get, and you accepted it, but it was still painful. It can be the Atari games or Nintendo games or Sega games that don’t exist anymore that you played in your childhood.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized – you don’t have to be suffering some great trauma, something unusual and particularly damaging, to feel pain. You don’t have to have lost your entire home in a hurricane to have lost something you truly valued and miss a lot. You don’t have to have had toxic parents to have been denied some things you wanted because they just didn’t have the money, or the resources, or the health.

Time is pain. Loss and disappointment are part of human existence. But you don’t have to try to justify why your specific loss or disappointment is especially bad to admit that it hurts and do something to rectify that hurt in some small way.

I personally feel there’s a strong correlation between the ‘heroes save suffering world through WAR AND SUFFERING’ school of fantasy and the people who think Aragorn is the hero.

Instead of, you know, functioning entirely as a) a healer, b) a distraction, and most importantly c) a hobbit delivery system.  

Hobbits brought down Sauron AND Saruman, thwarted Denethor’s insanity, stopped the Witch King of Angmar, thwarted Saruman again, and REBUILT AFTER THE WAR. And they did it all with, I swear to God, the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP. 

Bilbo befriends Gandalf and a bunch of cranky dwarves, intervenes repeatedly to try to prevent dragon attacks, murder and war, and then just WANDERS HOME WITH THE RING.

Bilbo’s POWER OF FRIENDSHIP allows him to actually leave the Ring, something nobody’s ever done before.

Frodo and his friends set off to take the Ring to Elrond, make friends with the local reclusive demigod and survive purely thanks to THAT FRIENDSHIP. 

The hobbits unite the Nine Walkers with FRIENDSHIP. 

Merry and Pippin befriend the reclusive tree people, GOODBYE SARUMAN. 

Frodo trots across the world befriending people and gets them all the way to the fiery mountain, when Sam’s friendship GETS THEM THE REST OF THE WAY. 

Meanwhile, Pippin makes friends in Minas Tirith and SAVES THE DAY AGAIN. 

Merry befriends Eowyn and inspires ‘Dernhelm’ to just suit up and go like he does and distracts the Witch King at the crucial moment DAY SAVED THANK YOU. 

Then when they think it’s all over, they amble back to the Shire, find it in trouble, and CALL ON THEIR FRIENDS TO FUCKING CARE BEAR STARE SARUMAN OUT OF TOWN. 

So, you know, any swords-and-orcs fantasy that has the Aragorn/Boromir character as the hero and no hobbits? You know that author Missed The Point. Aragorn was a great guy, but he wasn’t the hero. The hero, always, was the Ordinary Person, the Little Guy, the kindly souls who never wanted to pick up a sword, but did it because it needed to be done.

many people think they know the ‘ Tolkien hero’, but they do not. they skim, they assume that theres some destined turnip farmer who defeats evil because prophesy and gets the girl and theres a happy ending. missing every point of Tolkien they believe Aragorn is the hero and his virtue was valor the true Tolkien hero hates adventure, every step of the way wishing they were back at home having eggs for breakfast and cake for teatime, and the only reason they havent left to go back home is they fight to preserve eggs and teatime as something that exists at all. on their adventures they saw the beauty of the world and would defend that beauty even if it meant great personal sacrifice. the true Tolkien hero is Samwise and his virtue was compassion the evil may be beaten back, but never truly gone, you may have returned home but your scars remain eggs for breakfast and cake for teatime are not somehow magically better because you bled for them, your journeys should be seen as a necessary pain and not something to glory you spit in the eye of glory for youve seen good men die for honor and never again will they return home or sit beside you in the garden watching the sunset

to understand the heros journey is to understand the pain of loss and the compassion that keeps you together

I am heartbreakingly in awe of the strength of the Ukrainian people.

Some things that really stuck out to me from the coverage I've watched so far:

Ukrainian officials requested that a no fly zone be placed over Ukrainian territory and Russia has not just been bombing military targets, they have been bombing areas in cities filled with civilians - they have shelled multiple Ukrainian nurseries, kindergartens and an orphanage, killing numerous children

Ukraine's UN ambassador told his Russian counterpart that "there's no purgatory for war criminals, they go straight to hell"

A Ukrainian soldier went onto a bridge during battle to detonate a bomb on it knowing he would die in the process

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president has refused offers to evacuate him and is insisting on staying above ground in the capitol (Kyiv) which is currently being bombed and invaded by Russian troops. Russia claims that they are willing to have peace-talks if Ukraine surrenders - Zelenskyy (rightfully, in my opinion) has refused

It is estimated that 100,000 Ukrainians have fled across the border to neighbouring countries so far. Polish citizens have been offering to drive them where they need to go and also offering them places to stay. Women and children have had to leave male loved ones behind at the border as Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 have been barred from leaving the country in order that they may be conscripted into the Ukrainian army

Russian soldiers on a warship told Ukrainian soldiers stationed on a Ukrainian island (Snake Island) that they were about to invade the island and told the soldiers there to surrender and you could hear the Ukrainian soldiers over the radio saying "so this is it" because they knew they were going to die and then they told the Russian warship to go fuck themselves

There is a video of a Ukrainian woman going up to Russian soldiers and telling them they are cursed and offering them sunflower seeds (the national flower of Ukraine) to put in their pockets so that when they die on Ukrainian soil at least sunflowers will grow

I am so sorry to every Ukrainian for what you are going through. Putin is a despicable man. I am deeply impressed and humbled by the strength your people are showing - I don't know that I could ever be that brave.

This would be a good time to remember that when Donald Trump was impeached for the first time, it was for withholding $400 million in military aid for Ukraine -- which was already fighting Russian aggression -- to force Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to investigate false claims about Trump’s political opponents.

That military assistance that President Trump held back from Ukraine for 84 days included “sniper rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, night vision goggles, medical aid and other equipment the Ukrainian military needed to fight a grinding war against Russian-backed separatists”. 

I’m sure nobody has forgotten that, but every time I see a new story about Trump praising Vladimir Putin, as he has done THIS week, I think it’s important to recall that he also extorted Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is literally fighting for his life while leading Ukraine against Russia.
