I feel that I have semi-succesfully combined Dungeon Meshi With Fallout. However within the fic, I'm worried about characterization. How do you push through things and characterize everybody well?
Hi!
Congratulations on finishing (or mostly finishing) such a big project! (Also sorry for the late response! I kinda foresaw my reply to be a little long)
I’m really flattered to be asked for advice on characterization! But to be honest, most of what I do is pretty vibes based, and the way I’ve characterized the dunmeshi crew hasn’t vibed with everyone. I feel like in the realm of fandom, you have some liberty with how you choose to interpret the characters, especially if you’re altering their backstories in a crossover/au. I think the hardest part is figuring out the traits you want to preserve. Bc you still want to capture the character and figure out what they’d authentically do in your scenarios.
Sometimes I like to think of characterization as a puzzle where different pieces can be fit together to create the same picture. I think, as long as you’re approaching things with a strong idea of the final picture you’re trying to paint, the pieces you build it out of can be a little differently shaped. (And what pieces you want to be the same as the originals)
A good source of help is u/dunmeshistash who has one of the most impressive independent archives of dunmeshi content. Kui has created a lot of extra material (profiles, short comics, post canon comics, etc) that can lend some additional insight. I’ll link them here: https://dunmeshistash.tumblr.com/
